To use Spine animation in a mobile app, build and animate a character in the Spine Editor, export its skeleton data and atlas textures, then load those assets with the runtime for your app’s framework. The runtime—not a rendered video—draws the character and lets your app choose, blend, and change animations.
Choose your app’s runtime before you start
Spine’s editor and runtime have separate jobs: the editor is where you rig and animate, while a runtime library loads and renders the exported assets in an application. Choose the integration that matches your existing app rather than assuming the Unity workflow applies to every mobile project. Esoteric Software lists runtimes for iOS, Android, Unity, and Flutter. For Unity, use the spine-unity documentation; for a native or Flutter app, follow the documentation for that runtime. A community runtime is a third-party option, so verify its compatibility and maintenance separately.
Also confirm that you have a suitable Spine license before planning to ship. Esoteric Software states in its spine-unity documentation: “A Spine license is required to integrate the Spine Runtimes into your applications.” The official purchase page distinguishes license tiers and editor features; Essential cannot save or export projects containing Professional features such as meshes or inverse kinematics (IK).
Prepare character art as separate parts
Start with a simple character whose artwork is divided into pieces that can move independently—for example, torso, head, upper and lower arms, hands, upper and lower legs, and feet. Prepare and name the source images in an image-editing application before importing them into Spine. Parts that need to bend or deform can be handled differently from rigid pieces, so keep the first rig manageable and add complexity only when the motion needs it.

Build the skeleton and create an animation
In Spine, arrange the imported art and create a hierarchy of bones to control it. Attach each image part to an appropriate bone, then pose the character at key points on the timeline. Test the poses as you go: a bone hierarchy that is easy to animate and reuse is more valuable than a complicated setup for its own sake.

Spine includes tools such as mesh skinning and weights for deformable artwork, inverse kinematics for posing connected limbs, timing controls, and ghosting to compare poses. These are options, not prerequisites for a first animation; use them when they solve a specific rigging or motion problem. The Spine product overview describes these capabilities.
Create clear animation names that your app can request later, such as idle, walk, and jump. Preserve a setup pose and make transitions between animations intentional. The runtime APIs can control animation and support blending, so app behavior can respond to user input or game state instead of playing a fixed movie.

Export skeleton data and atlas textures
Spine can export skeleton data as JSON or binary, with image assets packed into texture atlases. JSON is human-readable and convenient for inspection; binary is compact and optimized for loading speed and size. Whichever format you choose, ensure the runtime you are using supports it.
Unity: export a learning-friendly JSON setup
The official spine-unity beginner export workflow uses JSON, an atlas file, and one or more PNG atlas pages. In the Export view, choose JSON, enable texture atlas packing, leave Animation cleanup disabled to preserve setup-pose keys, and set the atlas extension to .atlas.txt. For spine-unity 4.3 and newer, the guide says to disable Premultiply alpha and enable Bleed. These settings are specific to the documented Unity workflow and may change; check the instructions for your installed runtime version.

Unity: use binary for production when appropriate
The same Unity guide recommends binary for production because it is smaller and faster to load. Set the binary extension to .skel.bytes: spine-unity recognizes that extension, while it cannot load .skel. The export still includes atlas metadata and one or more PNG atlas pages. Test the resulting files with the actual runtime and app rather than assuming an export option is interchangeable across integrations.
Import the assets and connect app behavior
In Unity, import the exported skeleton data, atlas metadata, and PNG page files using spine-unity. The plugin is a C# runtime based on spine-csharp. In other frameworks, use the corresponding official runtime and its asset-loading instructions. The key idea is the same: the app loads the skeleton and texture assets, then asks the runtime to display and control animation.

Use the runtime’s animation APIs to choose an animation in response to app state—for instance, start idle on screen entry, switch to walk when movement begins, and blend or crossfade when changing states. The exact API calls depend on the runtime and version, so follow its documentation rather than copying Unity-specific code into a native or Flutter project.
Keep the Spine Editor version aligned with the runtime version. Esoteric Software’s getting-started guide says: “When using Spine in production, we highly suggest explicitly setting the Spine editor version to match your Spine Runtimes version.” This helps avoid incompatibility from authoring data with a newer editor than the runtime can handle.
Test on the target app and diagnose problems
- Check the exported files: confirm the skeleton data, atlas metadata, and all referenced PNG pages are present and included in the app’s assets.
- Load the character in the target runtime: verify that the skeleton appears with the intended textures and that the named animations can be played.
- Exercise transitions and app states: trigger each animation through the same input or state changes the app will use, and check blending where transitions matter.
- Compare the runtime with the app: if the export does not render as expected, use Esoteric Software’s Skeleton Viewer to inspect how exported skeleton data renders. This can help distinguish an asset or runtime issue from app-code behavior.
- Test the actual device and layout: confirm the character remains visible and behaves correctly in the mobile app’s screen, UI, and performance context.
Unity UI atlas consideration
If displaying a Spine character with Unity’s SkeletonGraphic, the spine-unity assets guide recommends a single-page atlas where possible. Multiple pages can increase draw calls or submeshes, and CanvasRenderer has a default single-texture limit. This is specific to the Unity UI path, not a universal rule for all mobile integrations.
Choose the export format and atlas layout for the job
| Choice | Use it when | Trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| JSON skeleton data | You are learning, inspecting, or debugging exported data. | Human-readable; confirm support in the target runtime. The Unity beginner guide documents this workflow. |
| Binary skeleton data | You are preparing a Unity production export. | Spine describes binary as compact and optimized for loading speed and size. For spine-unity, use .skel.bytes. |
Single-page atlas for Unity SkeletonGraphic |
The character is used in Unity UI and its art fits on one atlas page. | Can avoid extra draw calls or submeshes and fits CanvasRenderer’s default single-texture limit. |
| Multiple atlas pages | The packed art needs more than one page. | Account for the target runtime and rendering path; the single-page recommendation above is specifically for Unity UI. |
Use the right Spine license for the project
License needs depend on the editor features you use and the project’s business circumstances. The official purchase page lists tier terms and prices, which can change; check it directly before buying. In particular, do not assume Essential covers Professional-only features such as meshes or IK, because the vendor says Essential cannot save or export projects containing those features.
