There is no single best IT management certification for every leader. The right choice depends on the work you own, your experience, and the methods your organization uses. Security leadership points toward credentials such as CISM or CISSP; enterprise governance toward CGEIT; service management toward ITIL; and project or Agile delivery toward CAPM, PMP, PMI-ACP, CSM, or SAFe. The 20 credentials below are a curated selection, not a ranking or an exhaustive list.

How to choose an IT management certification

Start with the responsibility you want to strengthen—not the credential with the broadest name. A certification can signal knowledge of a discipline or framework, but it does not by itself guarantee a job, promotion, or salary increase.

  • Match the target work: distinguish people management, governance, risk, security, service management, architecture, project delivery, Agile transformation, process improvement, and AI transformation.
  • Check career stage and eligibility: some programs are useful as introductory study; others target experienced practitioners. Passing an exam may not be enough to receive the certification: CGEIT and CISM, for example, have separate experience requirements.
  • Fit the organization: a framework credential is most useful when your employer uses that framework or the role owns the function it addresses.
  • Check effort and upkeep: confirm current exam fees, preparation or training requirements, renewal rules, and continuing-education obligations with the issuer. Those details can change.
  • Assess the signal: choose a credential that supports the work you want to do and can be backed up by practical experience.

The list below follows the 20 credentials named by CIO on February 10, 2026. Names and versions are presented as that article identified them; some are framework or certification schemes rather than directly comparable individual certifications. Check each issuer’s current program before enrolling.

Governance, risk, and security certifications

Certified in Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT)

CGEIT is aimed at professionals who manage, advise on, oversee, or support enterprise IT governance. ISACA requires candidates to pass the exam and document at least five years of relevant experience, covering at least three of four domains, including at least one year in Domain 1. The experience must fall within the ten years before application. Passing the exam and meeting the experience requirement are distinct steps. ISACA also lists an application process, a one-time US$50 processing fee, and 120 CPE hours per three-year reporting period, with at least 20 hours each year; check its live requirements before applying. ISACA CGEIT certification and ISACA’s application and certification requirements provide current details. ISACA offers a CGEIT Review Manual, 8th Edition, in print and digital formats, plus a free practice quiz.

Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC)

CRISC is a risk-focused option for IT professionals whose work includes identifying, assessing, and managing technology and information-system risk. It is a better fit when risk is part of your responsibilities than when your main goal is general people management. Confirm current exam and certification requirements with ISACA.

Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)

CISM focuses on information-security management rather than security technology alone. ISACA requires five years of professional information-security management experience in the CISM job-practice areas, earned within the ten years before application. Candidates may take the exam before fulfilling the experience requirement, but need the experience to receive certification. ISACA also requires 120 CPE hours in a three-year period, including at least 20 per year. Review the current rules at ISACA’s CISM certification requirements.

Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)

CISSP is a broad information-security credential often considered by experienced security practitioners and leaders. Consider it when security is a substantial part of your remit; it is not a substitute for governance, project-delivery, or general management preparation. Verify the current experience, exam, and maintenance rules with the credential owner before committing.

GIAC Strategic Planning, Policy, and Leadership (GSTRT)

GSTRT is the list’s security-planning and policy-oriented option. It may suit leaders working on strategic security direction and policy rather than general IT operations. Check GIAC’s current program details, prerequisites, and renewal requirements before selecting it.

GIAC Security Leadership (GSLC)

GSLC is another security-leadership-oriented credential in the selection. Compare its current scope with your actual responsibilities and with CISM or other security credentials; the title alone does not establish that the programs have identical content or requirements.

Project, Agile, and delivery certifications

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)

CAPM is the project-management option to investigate when you are building project-management knowledge or are earlier in your project career. Confirm current eligibility and exam details directly with PMI rather than assuming requirements from another PMI credential.

Project Management Professional (PMP)

PMP is a project-management credential for people seeking to demonstrate project leadership capability. It is relevant when delivery ownership is central to your IT role. Eligibility depends on PMI’s current requirements; use the live credential page or handbook to determine whether your experience qualifies.

PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)

PMI-ACP is the Agile-focused PMI option in this list. It is worth considering when your work involves Agile approaches and you want a credential aligned with that delivery practice, rather than a general IT-management credential.

Certified ScrumMaster (CSM)

CSM is a Scrum-oriented option for people leading or supporting Scrum teams. Its fit depends on whether Scrum is used in your organization and whether your role includes facilitating team practice; it should not be treated as a universal management credential.

Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)

SAFe refers to a framework and its associated credential paths, not one single certification title. It is most relevant when an organization uses SAFe for scaled Agile work. Identify the particular SAFe credential and current version that match your role before choosing training or an exam.

Service management and IT frameworks

Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) 4

ITIL supports service-management work, especially where the organization uses ITIL practices. The program now presents multiple routes and versions: PeopleCert’s qualification scheme describes Foundation, Managing Professional, Strategic Leader, Practice Manager, and Master routes, as well as an AI Governance extension. Its page describes ITIL Foundation (Version 5) and transition paths for some existing ITIL 4 holders. Meanwhile, the separate ITIL 4 Managing Professional page identifies ITIL 4 Foundation as the starting point for that route. If you hold an existing credential or are entering the program now, check which version and transition apply to your intended pathway at ITIL’s certification scheme and the ITIL 4 Managing Professional path.

COBIT 5 Foundation

COBIT credentials concern enterprise governance and management of information and technology. “COBIT 5 Foundation” is the historical label used in the CIO selection; do not assume it is the latest available version. Check ISACA’s current COBIT offerings and the version used by your organization before selecting a course or exam.

TOGAF 9

TOGAF is associated with enterprise architecture. “TOGAF 9” is the version-specific label in the source list, not confirmation that it is the current version. If your role involves architecture standards, roadmaps, or governance, compare the current certification options and versions with the architecture practice at your employer.

People management and broader IT leadership

AMA Certified Professional in Management

This is the list’s general management option. It may be relevant if your priority is core management skills rather than a technical framework or a specific IT function. Check the issuing organization’s current credential name, curriculum, and requirements.

Certified Information Technology Manager (CITM)

CITM is presented as an IT-management credential. Because the title alone does not establish its issuer, current status, or recognition in your target market, verify those details and compare the syllabus with your role before investing.

Information Technology Management and Leadership Professional (ITMLP)

ITMLP is another broad IT management and leadership option in the selection. Determine who issues the credential, what it assesses, and whether employers in your field recognize it; do not infer equivalence to established project, security, or governance certifications from its title.

Process improvement and AI transformation

Six Sigma

Six Sigma is a process-improvement method with multiple belt levels and providers. The list does not specify a level or issuing body, so identify the exact course and credential before comparing cost, prerequisites, and recognition. It is most relevant when your work includes measurable process improvement.

Microsoft Certified: AI Transformation Leader

This credential is oriented toward AI transformation leadership. Consider it if your responsibilities include planning or guiding organizational AI adoption, rather than simply using AI tools. Verify the current exam scope and availability with Microsoft.

PMI Certified Professional in Managing AI (PMI-CPMAI)

PMI-CPMAI is the AI-management option in PMI’s list of credentials. It may be relevant to leaders managing AI initiatives or projects. Check PMI’s current credential page for eligibility, exam, and maintenance details; requirements for other PMI certifications should not be carried over by assumption.

What to verify before you pay

Names and program structures change, and the list includes both broad labels and version-specific ones. Before registering, check the issuer’s current page for the exact credential title, exam availability, prerequisites, experience needed to earn certification, required training, fee, renewal cycle, and continuing-education rules. For CAPM, PMP, PMI-ACP, and PMI-CPMAI, PMI’s FAQ is a useful starting point for its certification processes, but consult each credential’s live page or handbook for its specific requirements: PMI certification FAQs.
