A priority label alone does not get a request through an open circuit breaker. In the scheduled Claude automation design described by Lily, the job must claim a shared probe slot, and then pass that permission to any child process that checks the breaker again. Miss either step and the real request never reaches the client.

How a priority probe is supposed to work

In this implementation, a job can make a real request while the quota circuit is open only if it is marked priority and claim_priority_probe() grants permission. The interval is configured to 30 minutes. The claim updates one shared last_priority_probe value under locked state, so it is one opportunity across all priority jobs—not a separate allowance for each job. See Lily’s description of the implementation.

  1. The scheduled job asks for a slot. While the circuit is open, run_job permits the attempt only if the job is priority and claim_priority_probe() succeeds.
  2. The permitted job launches its child command. That child must receive the probe authorization.
  3. The child checks the guard and makes the real client call. Without propagated authorization, the nested guard still sees an open circuit and blocks the request.

The flow is therefore: priority job → claim shared slot → pass authorization to child → child guard → real request. The slot claim and the child’s guard check are separate gates.

Pitfall 1: Treating the interval as per-job

Because all priority jobs update the same last_priority_probe, the first job to claim a slot wins. If several priority jobs run during the 30-minute interval, later jobs skip instead of receiving their own probe. This is deliberate contention control while the quota remains exhausted, but it can postpone a particular job’s chance to test whether service has recovered.

  • PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
  • FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
  • SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only

That trade-off matters when scheduled work has different urgency. A shared slot limits real attempts, but it does not guarantee fairness among priority jobs. If the posting job claims the opportunity, for example, an engagement job cannot also use it during that interval.

Pitfall 2: Forgetting to pass permission to the child

A successful parent claim does not automatically authorize a nested request. The parent launches a child command, and that child routes its client call through the quota guard again. Unless the parent passes CLAUDE_QUOTA_PRIORITY_PROBE=1 to the child, the second guard check sees the circuit as open and rejects the call before it reaches the real client.

Conceptually, the parent command needs to propagate the flag when launching the child:

CLAUDE_QUOTA_PRIORITY_PROBE=1 child-command

The exact command may differ in a particular codebase; the important requirement is that the authorization survive the process boundary and be understood by the child’s guard.

Classify a quota-rejected probe so catch-up can retry it

A probe that reaches the quota guard but is rejected has not completed the scheduled work. In the described catch-up flow, retry logic looks for SKIPPED markers. If a quota-rejected probe is recorded only as an ordinary failed run, catch-up may not recognize that the work was skipped and may leave it behind.

Record the retry-relevant outcome as skipped even when the process exit code signals failure. These communicate different facts: the exit code reports that the attempt did not succeed, while the marker tells catch-up that the scheduled work did not get a real opportunity and should be retried. This marker is part of retry correctness, not just a log label.

What priority probes mean in other breaker designs

“Probe” is not one universal behavior. Systems differ in what is admitted, how many attempts can run, what counts as recovery, and how failures affect the next attempt.

Implementation Probe scope and admitted traffic Recovery and failure behavior
Scheduled Claude automation described by Lily One shared interval-wide claim for priority jobs; a permitted job makes a real request. The described interval is 30 minutes. Source: Lily on DEV Community. A quota-rejected attempt should be marked SKIPPED for catch-up. The cited description does not establish an exponential backoff policy.
Linkerd After a minimum penalty duration, probation permits one actual application request as a probe. Linkerd circuit-breaking documentation. A health-check success alone does not establish recovery; the actual application request must succeed. Failed probes trigger exponentially growing backoff with jitter.
Go circuit library An Allow hook controls admission of a probe while moving from open toward closed. Package documentation. The implementation checks whether the request would exceed the concurrency limit before spending the half-open permit, so a request that cannot run does not consume the probe slot.
Crossplane reconciliation breaker Each Composite Resource has its own token-bucket breaker. During the open period it permits one request every 30 seconds to probe recovery. Crossplane circuit-breaker documentation. Documented defaults are a 100-event burst, refill of one event per second, and a five-minute cooldown. These are Crossplane-specific defaults, not general breaker settings.

When comparing a breaker with a priority-probe design, check five things: whether the slot is scoped to a job, resource, endpoint, or whole breaker; whether admission is one-at-a-time or bounded; whether the probe is synthetic health traffic or a real application request; how many successes establish recovery; and what backoff follows a failure.

Read job success rates as workload-specific evidence

Lily reports that the posting job (xpilot.autopost) had a 43% execution rate and an engagement job had a 64% rate in the same setup. These are anecdotal figures from that author’s workload, not benchmarks or a general prediction for scheduled jobs. Source: Lily, DEV Community, 2026.

If a job appears to miss work during quota pressure, inspect both the probe claim and the outcome marker: did another priority job take the shared slot, did the child inherit CLAUDE_QUOTA_PRIORITY_PROBE=1, and was a quota-rejected attempt recorded as SKIPPED for catch-up?
