Use 2.4 GHz as the compatibility-first choice: Ring says every Ring device supports 2.4 GHz, but only some support 5 GHz. Check your exact doorbell model before choosing. If it supports both bands, either may work; the better choice depends on whether the network is visible and the connection is reliable at the doorbell’s location.
Does a Ring doorbell need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi?
Every Ring device supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, according to Ring’s Wi-Fi network guidance. Some models also support 5 GHz. That means 2.4 GHz is the broadly compatible option, but a dual-band doorbell does not necessarily have to use it.
Start with the doorbell’s exact model rather than assuming all Ring devices have the same Wi-Fi capabilities. In the Ring app, open Device Settings → Device Health → Device Details to find the model name, then check its specifications.
2.4 GHz or 5 GHz: how to choose
| Situation | What to try |
|---|---|
| Your model supports only 2.4 GHz | Choose the 2.4 GHz network. |
| Your model supports both bands, and 5 GHz is visible with a reliable signal at the door | Either supported band is an option. Ring’s general guidance does not establish that 5 GHz is universally faster or better for every doorbell installation. |
| Your dual-band model cannot find or join the 5 GHz network | Try 2.4 GHz, then check the router’s 5 GHz channel and the signal at the installation location. |
Ring product specifications list dual-band Wi-Fi for the Video Doorbell 3 Plus and Video Doorbell 4. The Video Doorbell 4 is marked discontinued on Ring’s product page, so it is an example of a model with 5 GHz support—not a current buying recommendation. See the Video Doorbell 3 Plus specifications and Video Doorbell 4 specifications.

Why the 5 GHz network might not appear
Visibility depends on more than the band printed on your router. The precise Ring model must support 5 GHz, and router channel settings can matter. Ring says that in Canada, Europe, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, Ring devices cannot use certain 5 GHz channels, specifically channels 36–64; Ring recommends channels 100–165 for best 5 GHz performance in those regions. Confirm the rules and channel options that apply to your region and router in Ring’s router compatibility guidance.
If your Ring device detects the network but cannot join it, the issue may be security settings rather than signal strength. Ring identifies incompatible encryption, such as WPA3, as a possible cause. If you are unsure how to check or change router encryption, contact your router provider.

Check signal quality at the doorbell
Changing bands is not a substitute for checking the Wi-Fi connection where the device is installed. In the Ring app, open the doorbell’s Device Health and check its RSSI. Ring’s guidance rates readings of 0 to -60 as “Great,” -60 to -70 as “Okay,” -70 to -80 as “Poor,” and -80 or worse as “Very poor.” See Ring’s Wi-Fi signal recommendations.
Walls made of brick, stucco, or metal, as well as large appliances, electronics, mirrors, and distance from the router, can weaken a connection. If RSSI is poor, consider moving the router or reducing obstructions. Ring also names a Chime Pro or mesh router as possible ways to improve coverage; whether either helps depends on your home layout.

Check upload speed separately
A strong signal reading does not tell you whether your internet connection has enough upload capacity. Ring says a device needs at least 1 Mbps to work and recommends these upload speeds by video resolution:
| Video resolution | Recommended upload speed |
|---|---|
| 720p | 1 Mbps |
| 1080p | 2 Mbps |
| 1536p | 2.5 Mbps |
| 2K | 10 Mbps |
| 4K | 15 Mbps |
These are Ring’s general upload recommendations by resolution. Separately, the product specifications for the cited Video Doorbell 3 Plus and Video Doorbell 4 state that 2 Mbps download and upload are needed for optimal performance. Treat that as model-specific guidance, not a universal speed requirement for every Ring doorbell. Multiple devices also add to the household’s total network demand. See Ring’s Wi-Fi recommendations, the Video Doorbell 3 Plus specifications, and the Video Doorbell 4 specifications.

Choose a network during setup
- Confirm the model in the Ring app at Device Settings → Device Health → Device Details, then verify its supported Wi-Fi bands.
- Put your phone near the doorbell and begin setup in the Ring app. Select one of the detected networks that the model supports.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password when prompted. If the network is detected but the app reports an incompatible network, check router encryption rather than assuming the signal is weak.
- If the device starts a firmware update, let it finish without interrupting power or setup.
Ring’s setup instructions describe selecting a detected network in the app; see Ring’s Video Doorbell setup guide.
