1Password 7 arrived first as a Windows beta on March 20, 2018, then as a Mac beta on March 28. Both announcements centered on a redesigned interface and easier access to saved logins, but the platforms had different headline features: Windows highlighted Windows Hello and a revamped 1Password mini, while Mac emphasized vault visibility and moving items between vaults. The releases followed in May 2018.
What the 1Password 7 betas changed
AgileBits presented version 7 as a broad redesign rather than a small update. Dave Teare, author of the Windows beta announcement, called it “a massive release where quite literally everything has changed.” That was the company’s promotional description, not an independent assessment. The practical changes were easier vault navigation, a refreshed interface, and updated ways to reach and use saved logins.
Windows beta: March 20, 2018
The Windows beta introduced a redesigned interface and a new sidebar for categories, tags, and vaults. It brought account and standalone vaults into the same application experience, and the announcement said Windows 7 could work with local vaults and vaults syncing directly as well as 1Password accounts. 1Password’s Windows beta announcement also highlighted these features:
- Windows Hello: After the first unlock with the Master Password, users could unlock with a fingerprint or face on supported devices.
- Large-type password view: A larger display made passwords easier to read.
- Redesigned 1Password mini: The compact interface could suggest relevant logins.
- Watchtower alerts: The app could alert users to logins Watchtower identified as needing a password change.
Mac beta: March 28, 2018
The Mac beta focused on making vaults and items easier to see and manage. Its sidebar used a dark theme and monochrome icons, displayed all vaults, and made vault editing easier. Users could also drag items between vaults and accounts. These were the Mac announcement’s defining workflow changes, rather than the Windows-specific Windows Hello feature. The Mac beta announcement describes the redesign.

How the Mac and Windows announcements differed
| Area | Windows beta | Mac beta |
|---|---|---|
| Vault organization | Sidebar showed categories, tags, and vaults; the announcement described access to account and standalone vaults. | Sidebar showed all vaults; users could drag items between vaults and accounts. |
| Unlock and password display | Highlighted Windows Hello unlocking after an initial Master Password unlock, plus a large-type password view. | Not stated in the beta announcement. |
| Quick access | Redesigned 1Password mini could suggest relevant logins. | The beta announcement emphasized vault management; the later launch coverage described mini’s broader workflow. |
| Beta announcement | March 20, 2018. | March 28, 2018. |
| Version 7 launch announcement | May 29, 2018. | May 22, 2018. |
The two announcements share a redesign-and-access theme, but they should not be read as identical feature lists. For example, Windows Hello was specifically highlighted for Windows, while drag-and-drop movement between vaults and accounts was a Mac beta highlight.
What happened between beta and launch
The Mac version 7 launch announcement came on May 22, 2018; the Windows launch announcement followed on May 29. The Mac launch post describes a more developed 1Password mini workflow: it could suggest likely items for the current browser or app, let users edit or move items, and add documents. App integration and drag and drop also featured in the workflow. The Mac launch announcement provides that later context.

- PHISHING-RESISTANT 2FA: Cryptographically binds to real domains, making phishing attacks impossible unlike SMS codes or authenticator apps.
- 3-SIDE CAPACITIVE TOUCH: Tap the end, left, or right side to authenticate, so it works in any orientation or crowded USB port.
- MULTI-COLOR LED INDICATOR: Blue means ready, blinking blue means tap now, green means success, and red means error for instant status feedback.
- IP68 WATERPROOF & BATTERY-FREE: Crush-resistant one-piece construction survives daily carry on a keychain or in a bag for years without any batteries.
- UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY: Works with Google, Microsoft, Apple, GitHub, AWS, and any FIDO2 / U2F / WebAuthn service, storing up to 100 passkeys.
For Mac 7.0, 1Password’s release notes counted “nearly forty new features, 50 improvements, and countless bug fixes.” That is the company’s count for its release, not an independent feature comparison. The same notes describe Watchtower checks for compromised websites, weak or reused passwords, logins that support two-factor authentication, and expiring items. 1Password also said passwords did not leave the computer during its check against the Have I Been Pwned database. The Mac release notes document those details.
Windows continued to change after its initial beta announcement. The Windows release notes, for example, document Watchtower 2.0 in June 2018. The beta posts are therefore snapshots of early announcements, not exhaustive lists of every feature in the finished releases. The Windows release notes record the later progression.

What the Windows beta announcement said about pricing
In 2018, 1Password said version 7 was included with memberships. For standalone license holders, the Windows beta announcement listed a planned $64.99 license and a $39.99 upgrade offer for beta participants. These were historical announced prices and terms from that post, not current pricing. The announcement is the source for those figures.

The announcements and release notes establish what 1Password described for its 2018 beta and launch cycle. They do not establish whether 1Password 7 is available or supported now, or whether it is compatible with current versions of macOS or Windows. Readers checking present-day availability, support, or compatibility should not rely on the 2018 release posts for those answers.
