The best laptops under $400 for 2026 are configuration-specific: choose a Chromebook for browser-based work, or choose a Windows laptop with at least 8GB of RAM and an SSD for traditional software. Acer Aspire, ASUS Vivobook Go, Lenovo IdeaPad, and Chromebook Plus models offer the strongest value, but sale prices and specifications change frequently.
A $400 pre-tax budget can buy a dependable everyday computer for email, web browsing, schoolwork, Microsoft 365 web apps, video calls, streaming, and light document work. The wrong configuration can still be frustratingly slow, especially when a Windows laptop combines 4GB of RAM with 64GB eMMC storage.
The rankings below are model-family recommendations, not claims that every laptop in a family has the same hardware. Check the exact processor, memory, storage type, display resolution, operating system, seller, condition, warranty, and price before ordering. The research cutoff for this guide is August 16, 2026.

- Choose Windows when you need desktop applications, specialized school or business software, traditional drivers, or broader offline compatibility.
- Choose ChromeOS when your work is mainly web browsing, Google Workspace, streaming, video calls, Android apps, or other browser-based tasks.
- For Windows, target 8GB of RAM, a genuine SSD, and preferably 256GB of storage; 4GB RAM and 64GB eMMC are poor long-term targets.
- For a large-screen Chromebook, the Acer Chromebook Plus 515, Acer Chromebook Plus 516, and Lenovo Chromebook Plus i 15 are the most compelling families to check during sales.
- “Reliable” means better odds of remaining usable and supported; no budget laptop should be treated as guaranteed to last a specific number of years.
15 best laptops under $400 for 2026: quick comparison
Prices in this category are unusually volatile. The table uses a price gate rather than inventing a permanent price: buy a listed model only when the exact configuration is verified below $400 before tax. “Frequent-sale target” means the family sometimes enters the budget but is not reliably under $400. Confirm the price, stock, condition, and seller on the day of purchase.

For a current market check, RTINGS’ under-$400 laptop guide provides independent comparison context, while Best Buy’s Windows listings and Best Buy’s Chromebook listings show the configurations and sale stock available at a given moment. Neither dynamic retailer page proves that every listed family remains below $400 permanently.
Which laptop under $400 is best overall?
The Acer Aspire Go 15 is the strongest general Windows target, while the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14 is the stronger general Chromebook target. These are separate winners because Windows and ChromeOS solve different software problems.
Acer Aspire Go 15: best overall Windows value
Target an Acer Aspire Go 15 with a Ryzen 3 or better processor, 8GB of RAM, and an SSD. That combination is substantially more suitable for web browsing, Microsoft 365, email, video calls, and ordinary multitasking than a Celeron-class Windows laptop with 4GB of RAM and eMMC storage.
The Aspire Go 15 is a practical choice for a student, parent, remote worker, or household buyer who needs Windows applications but does not need gaming performance. The compromises are typical of the category: the chassis, keyboard, speakers, webcam, and display may be basic, and storage varies by retailer-specific configuration. Check whether the screen is Full HD and whether the memory is soldered before buying.
If the Aspire Go 15 rises above $400, compare the Acer Aspire 3 and ASUS Vivobook Go 15 rather than automatically buying a weaker configuration.
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14: best standard Chromebook
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14 is a strong browser-first option when the exact unit has 8GB of RAM and preferably 128GB of storage. ChromeOS generally feels more responsive than Windows on very low-end hardware because the operating system and application model are different.
The Lenovo Chromebook is appropriate for Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, Gmail, browser research, streaming, and video calls. The Chromebook is not appropriate for full desktop Adobe applications, many Windows accounting programs, specialized engineering tools, or school software that requires Windows. Confirm the school’s requirements before purchasing a Chromebook for proctored exams or technical coursework.
What are the best Windows laptops under $400?
The best Windows laptops under $400 are the Acer Aspire Go 15, Acer Aspire 3, ASUS Vivobook Go 15, ASUS Vivobook Go 14, Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i 15, Lenovo IdeaPad 1, HP 14 Laptop, and Dell 15 or Inspiron 15, but only in the recommended configurations.
1. Acer Aspire Go 15
Buy it for: the best balance of Windows usability and price. Target: Ryzen 3 or better, 8GB RAM, and a 128GB–512GB SSD. Skip it when: the listing has 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, or a low-resolution panel at a price close to $400.
2. Acer Aspire 3
Buy it for: a familiar full-size Windows laptop. The Ryzen 3 7320U, 8GB RAM, and SSD configuration is the meaningful target. Watch: Aspire 3 listings can have non-upgradeable memory and limited storage, so the family name alone is not enough.
3. ASUS Vivobook Go 15
Buy it for: stronger Windows value when the Ryzen 5 7520U, 8GB RAM, and 512GB SSD version drops below $400. The larger SSD is useful for Office files, downloads, photos, and updates. Watch: the display may have ordinary brightness and color coverage, and retailer listings can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBudget retailer results have shown ASUS Vivobook Go 15 configurations with Ryzen 5, 8GB RAM, and 512GB storage, but a dynamic category page is not proof of a permanent price. Check the ASUS under-$500 laptop category and the retailer’s exact SKU before treating a listing as an under-$400 recommendation.
4. ASUS Vivobook Go 14
Buy it for: a smaller footprint for commuting, classrooms, and limited desks. Ryzen 3 or Ryzen 5, 8GB RAM, and SSD storage are the right targets. Skip: 4GB and eMMC variants, which can turn a compact laptop into a poor Windows experience.

- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
5. Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i 15
Buy it for: a large Windows screen and ordinary school or office work. Target a Core i3-N or equivalent processor, 8GB RAM, and an SSD. Watch: some configurations use a 1366×768 HD screen rather than Full HD; that resolution is a major compromise on a 15.6-inch display.
6. Lenovo IdeaPad 1
Buy it for: the least expensive recognizable Windows laptop that still meets the basic specification threshold. Choose 8GB RAM and SSD storage, preferably with a Ryzen 3 or Intel N-series processor. Do not buy on price alone: Celeron, 4GB, and 64GB configurations are severely limited.
7. HP 14 Laptop
Buy it for: a compact HP design with broad retail availability. Look for an Intel N-series/Core i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, 8GB RAM, and an SSD. Watch: “HP 14” identifies a broad family rather than one specification; compare the processor, display, storage, and operating system line by line.
8. Dell 15 or Inspiron 15
Buy it for: a retailer sale on a Core i3, Ryzen 3, or better configuration with 8GB RAM and an SSD. Watch: Dell’s exact SKU determines the display resolution, webcam, ports, warranty, and battery. Confirm whether the laptop is new, open-box, refurbished, or marketplace-sold.
What are the best Chromebooks under $400?
The best Chromebooks under $400 are the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14, Lenovo Chromebook Plus i 15, Acer Chromebook Plus 515, Acer Chromebook Plus 516, ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34, HP Chromebook Plus x360 14, and selected HP Chromebook 14 or Acer Chromebook 315 configurations.
9. Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14
Buy it for: affordable browser productivity in a conventional 14-inch format. Prefer 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. The model suits Google Workspace, email, streaming, web research, and video calls, but ChromeOS compatibility must be checked before buying for Windows-only school or work software.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →10. Lenovo Chromebook Plus i 15
Buy it for: a large, modern Chromebook display. Lenovo lists a 15.3-inch WUXGA IPS 16:10 panel with 400-nit brightness, 120Hz refresh, and 100% sRGB for the Chromebook Plus i configuration, along with processor options up to Intel Core 3 N355, according to Lenovo’s official specifications.
The Lenovo Chromebook Plus i 15 is attractive for documents, split-screen browser work, and users who prefer a larger display. Lenovo lists multiple variants, so the strong display specification should not be assumed for every unit. Verify the exact memory, display, processor, and sale SKU.
11. Acer Chromebook Plus 515
Buy it for: a 15.6-inch Full HD Chromebook Plus system with a Core i3 or better processor, 8GB RAM, and 128GB–256GB storage. Acer describes the Chromebook Plus 515 as supporting processor options up to a 13th-generation Intel Core i7 and advertises battery life of up to 10 hours; the advertised figure is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed real-world result. Check the official Acer product page for the specific configuration and whether the sale unit has touch input.
12. Acer Chromebook Plus 516
Buy it for: a large productivity display and a useful selection of ports. Acer’s specifications describe a 16-inch WUXGA 16:10 display, 300-nit brightness, optional touch, USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, and processor options up to Intel Core 7 on the Chromebook Plus 516 product page.
The Acer Chromebook Plus 516 is one of the better choices for users who want a big screen for documents and browser multitasking. The model can exceed $400 outside sales, and port, touch, processor, RAM, and storage details depend on the exact configuration.
13. ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34
Buy it for: features that can make a budget Chromebook feel less basic. ASUS lists 14-inch display variants, Core or Core 3 processors, 8GB or 16GB onboard memory depending on SKU, 128GB or 256GB UFS storage, Wi-Fi 6 or 6E, privacy-shutter camera options, and a starting weight of about 3.17 pounds in its official CX34 specifications.
The CX34 is a good sale target, not an automatic under-$400 recommendation. ASUS’s official page shows at least one configuration priced at $659.99, demonstrating why the exact SKU and current price matter. Buy the CX34 only when the required configuration is genuinely below the budget.

14. HP Chromebook Plus x360 14
Buy it for: a touchscreen convertible design for notes, media, presentations, and flexible positioning. Target 8GB RAM and at least 128GB of storage. Watch: a convertible Chromebook can cost more without providing proportionally faster hardware, so skip it if the price exceeds $400 for a modest processor or small storage.

15. HP Chromebook 14 or Acer Chromebook 315
Buy it for: basic browsing, school portals, email, streaming, and cloud documents at the lowest practical price. Prefer 8GB RAM. A 64GB Chromebook can be workable for light cloud-first use, but local downloads and Android applications will consume that space quickly.
Skip: 4GB configurations, very weak or old Celeron/Pentium processors, and models close to their ChromeOS automatic-update deadline. HP’s Chromebook range is useful for checking current families, but the exact update-support date must be checked for the individual model.
Should you buy a Chromebook or a Windows laptop under $400?
Choose Windows if the buyer needs full Microsoft desktop applications, Adobe desktop software, specialized school or business programs, tax or engineering tools, traditional Windows utilities, particular drivers or peripherals, broader offline functionality, or local file storage.
Choose ChromeOS if the buyer mainly uses Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, Gmail, browser-based schoolwork, streaming, web research, video calls, Android applications, or other web services. ChromeOS can feel faster and more polished than a Windows laptop with a weak processor, 4GB RAM, and eMMC storage.

What specifications matter most in a $400 laptop?
RAM, storage type, processor class, display, operating system, ports, upgradeability, and support matter more than a familiar brand name. Use the following order when comparing two listings.
- RAM: Prefer 8GB. Four gigabytes can be adequate for a very light Chromebook workload, but 4GB is a poor Windows target in 2026, especially with browser tabs, video calls, Office applications, and background services.
- Storage: Prefer an SSD or NVMe SSD on Windows and sufficiently fast UFS storage on a Chromebook. “128GB storage” does not mean every storage type will feel or behave identically.
- Processor: Prefer Ryzen 3/Ryzen 5, Core i3/Core 3, or stronger. Read the exact generation and model number; “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5” alone does not prove that a budget laptop is fast.
- Display: Prefer Full HD or WUXGA. A 1366×768 HD panel is a significant compromise on a large 15.6-inch laptop because text and multitasking feel less spacious.
- Operating system: Windows versus ChromeOS determines software compatibility more than the logo on the lid.
- Ports and wireless: USB-C charging, USB-A, HDMI, a headphone jack, and Wi-Fi 6 or newer can matter more in daily use than a small processor difference.
- Upgradeability: Many thin budget laptops use soldered RAM. Never assume that memory or storage can be upgraded unless the exact service documentation confirms it.
- Warranty and returns: A clear warranty, meaningful return period, reputable seller, and known product-support page are important reliability signals in this category.
Is 4GB of RAM enough?
Four gigabytes of RAM is acceptable only for a very light Chromebook workload, such as a few browser tabs and occasional documents. Four gigabytes is a poor target for Windows in 2026 because Windows, browsers, video calls, Office applications, and background services compete for limited memory.
A buyer should not pay close to $400 for a 4GB laptop unless a specialized convertible design or unusually large discount provides a compelling reason. An 8GB configuration is the minimum sensible target for most students, office users, parents, seniors, and remote workers.
Is 64GB of storage enough?
Sixty-four gigabytes can work on a Chromebook used mainly with cloud storage, but 64GB is generally too restrictive for a comfortable Windows laptop. Operating-system files, updates, applications, downloads, and local photos quickly consume the available space.
Even 128GB can become cramped. Choose 256GB whenever possible for Windows, particularly if the laptop will hold photos, school files, Office applications, or offline media. On Chromebooks, confirm whether the listing uses eMMC, UFS, or another storage type rather than comparing capacity alone.
Can a laptop under $400 handle school or office work?
A correctly configured laptop under $400 can handle web research, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 web apps, ordinary documents and spreadsheets, email, video calls, streaming, basic coding education, and light multitasking.
Expect limitations with large spreadsheets, extensive local databases, heavy multitasking, advanced photo editing, video editing, 3D work, virtual machines, and modern games. Basic coding lessons can work well, but development environments that require multiple services, containers, virtual machines, or large local projects may need a stronger computer.
Remote workers should check the webcam, microphone, privacy shutter, USB-C docking support, external-monitor compatibility, and employer requirements. An employer’s Windows security software or device-management system may make a Chromebook unsuitable even when browser applications work.

Are these laptops good for gaming?
These are not gaming laptops. Casual browser games, older games, lightweight titles, Android games, or cloud gaming may be possible, but modern AAA games generally require a larger budget or a cloud-gaming service. Integrated graphics should not be interpreted as gaming hardware, and a Chromebook is not a Windows gaming replacement.
How reliable are laptops under $400?
Cheap laptops do not have a guaranteed lifespan. Better reliability prospects come from a balanced configuration, acceptable keyboard and chassis quality, a Full HD display, a clear manufacturer support page, a meaningful warranty and return window, and sufficient Chromebook update support.
A major-brand logo does not make a 4GB/64GB laptop reliable in practical use. A refurbished Dell Latitude, Lenovo ThinkPad, or HP ProBook may provide a better keyboard, chassis, and port selection than a new low-end consumer laptop, but refurbished buyers must evaluate battery wear, cosmetic grade, seller reputation, warranty length, return period, Windows license status, and whether the unit is genuinely refurbished or merely used.
“Reliable” in this guide means a better chance of remaining usable for the buyer’s workload. It does not mean independently tested durability or a promise that a laptop will last a particular number of years.

Skip these specifications and listings
- 4GB RAM on Windows: especially when the laptop will be used for video calls, Office applications, and many browser tabs.
- 64GB eMMC on Windows: storage becomes restrictive after system files, updates, and applications are installed.
- 1366×768 screens on 15.6-inch laptops: accept this only when the price is exceptionally low and the display compromise is understood.
- Vague Intel Celeron or Pentium listings: prefer a Ryzen 3 or Core 3 option when the price difference is reasonable.
- Unknown “upgraded” sellers: avoid listings that change RAM or storage without identifying the original model number, warranty, and component source.
- Refurbished units without policies: do not buy without a stated battery policy, warranty, return window, and condition grade.
- Coupon-dependent prices: verify whether a coupon, membership, trade-in, or bundle is required and available to you.
- Chromebooks near their update deadline: a low price is not good value if official ChromeOS support is nearly over.
How should you check a $400 laptop before buying?
- Copy the full model number or retailer SKU. Do not compare only “Aspire 3,” “HP 14,” “Inspiron 15,” or “Chromebook Plus.”
- Confirm the operating system. Make sure Windows software requirements are not being confused with ChromeOS capabilities.
- Confirm memory and storage. Look for 8GB RAM and an SSD on Windows; prefer 128GB or more on a Chromebook and 256GB where possible on Windows.
- Check the display resolution. Prefer Full HD or WUXGA, particularly on 15-inch and 16-inch laptops.
- Check ports and wireless. Confirm USB-C charging, HDMI, USB-A, headphone connectivity, Wi-Fi generation, and external-display support if those features matter.
- Check upgradeability. Assume RAM is soldered unless the exact documentation says otherwise.
- Check condition and seller. Confirm new, open-box, refurbished, or marketplace status, along with the seller’s return and warranty terms.
- Check Chromebook update support. Use Google’s official Auto Update policy and the model-specific support date immediately before publication or purchase.
- Check the final price. Use the U.S. pre-tax price and confirm that the sub-$400 total does not depend on an unavailable coupon or required accessory bundle.
Which laptop under $400 is best for each type of buyer?
| Buyer or use case | Best direction | Recommended targets | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Student using browser tools | Chromebook | Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14 or Chromebook Plus 515 | School portals, proctoring, VPN, extensions, and update-support date |
| Student using specialized software | Windows | Acer Aspire Go 15 or Acer Aspire 3 with 8GB and SSD | Required applications, 8GB RAM, and at least 128GB SSD |
| Senior or parent | Either | Full HD Chromebook or Windows laptop with a comfortable keyboard | Readable display, webcam, speakers, support, and return policy |
| Microsoft Office desktop user | Windows | ASUS Vivobook Go 15, Acer Aspire Go 15, or a suitable refurbished business laptop | Desktop Office requirements, 8GB RAM, and SSD storage |
| Large-screen buyer | Chromebook or Windows | Acer Chromebook Plus 515/516 or Lenovo Chromebook Plus i 15 | Exact resolution, brightness, touch support, weight, and sale price |
| Light programmer | Windows or Chromebook | Windows with 8GB RAM and SSD; Chromebook only for browser-based learning | Whether the course requires local IDEs, Linux tools, containers, or virtual machines |
| Remote worker | Usually Windows unless browser-only | Acer Aspire Go 15, ASUS Vivobook Go 15, or Chromebook Plus | Webcam, microphone, privacy shutter, docking, monitors, and employer software |
When is spending more than $400 worthwhile?
Moving from $400 to roughly $450–$550 can materially improve a Windows laptop when the extra budget buys 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, a brighter display, or a newer processor. Spending more is worthwhile when every acceptable sub-$400 Windows option has an inadequate display, cramped storage, or memory that cannot be upgraded.
Spending more is not automatically worthwhile for a browser-only buyer. A well-chosen Chromebook around $250–$400 may be the better experience than a marginal Windows laptop, provided ChromeOS supports the buyer’s applications and the model has sufficient remaining update support.
A refurbished business laptop can also be a stronger value than a new budget laptop, but the buyer trades new-battery confidence and easy returns for potentially better construction, keyboard quality, ports, and repairability.
Final decision tree
- Need Windows-only software? Buy a Windows laptop with 8GB RAM and an SSD.
- Use mainly browser applications? Buy a Chromebook, preferably with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.
- Need a large screen? Compare the Acer Chromebook Plus 515, Acer Chromebook Plus 516, and Lenovo Chromebook Plus i 15 by exact display and price.
- Need local files and applications? Favor a 256GB SSD Windows configuration.
- Need the lowest practical price? Choose a Chromebook, but check storage type, processor, RAM, and update support rather than buying from the headline capacity alone.
- Need the best longevity prospects? Choose 8GB RAM, SSD or fast UFS storage, a recent processor, a Full HD-or-better display, a reputable seller, a clear warranty, and strong remaining software support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a good laptop for under $400 in 2026?
Yes. A $400 pre-tax budget is enough for a good browser-focused Chromebook or a competent entry-level Windows laptop. The safest targets are 8GB of RAM, SSD or fast UFS storage, and a Full HD-or-better display, while exact prices and availability depend on the SKU and sale date.
Should I buy a 4GB laptop under $400?
Buy 4GB only for a very light Chromebook workload. Four gigabytes is a poor Windows target in 2026, particularly for browser tabs, video calls, Microsoft Office, and background services.
Can a Chromebook replace a Windows laptop?
A Chromebook can replace a Windows laptop for browser-based schoolwork, Google Workspace, email, streaming, and video calls. A Chromebook cannot reliably replace Windows for many desktop Adobe applications, specialized business or engineering software, Windows utilities, or school platforms that require Windows.
Is a refurbished business laptop better than a new laptop under $400?
A refurbished Dell Latitude, Lenovo ThinkPad, or HP ProBook can offer a better keyboard, chassis, and ports than a new low-end consumer laptop. Check battery wear, cosmetic condition, Windows licensing, seller reputation, warranty, and return period before buying.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: buy the operating system that matches the software first, then buy the strongest exact configuration within the $400 ceiling. Windows buyers should prioritize 8GB RAM and an SSD, preferably 256GB; Chromebook buyers should prioritize 8GB RAM, adequate UFS or SSD-like storage, remaining update support, and compatibility with school or work requirements. The Acer Aspire Go 15 and Acer Aspire 3 are strong Windows starting points, while the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14 and selected Chromebook Plus models are strong ChromeOS targets during verified sales.
