Troy Baker, who voiced Kai Leng in Mass Effect 3, refused to sit through a clip of the character in a recent career retrospective. He then said, “Yeah, I deserve that,” and “There’s so many reasons why I shouldn’t have played that character.” GamesRadar+ and VGTimes both reported the exchange on October 5, 2026.

What Baker said about Kai Leng

The remarks came during a Partychat video in which Baker was shown clips from roles across his career. When Kai Leng came up, GamesRadar+ reports, Baker turned away laughing and asked to skip it: “Don’t. Next clip. Nope, next clip.”

He then admitted, “Yeah, I deserve that,” and added, “There’s so many reasons why I shouldn’t have played that character.”

The three quotes

  • “Don’t… Next clip. Nope, next clip.” This was his immediate reaction as the clip appeared.
  • “Yeah, I deserve that.” This is how GamesRadar+ reports his later admission.
  • “There’s so many reasons why I shouldn’t have played that character.”

These lines come from GamesRadar+’s account of the video. The video itself could not be checked directly, so the quotes are secondhand.

What Baker did not say

Baker did not list his reasons. The report quotes only the general statement that there were many, so there is no basis for saying he named the writing, the design, the performance or anything else. His tone, as described, was self-deprecating and joking rather than a formal apology or a detailed critique.

GamesRadar+ also discusses why Kai Leng is disliked. That is the outlet’s own commentary, and it criticizes the character’s presentation and design. It is not Baker’s explanation. The piece itself acknowledges that criticism of the character may have grown beyond reasonable limits. The disdain is therefore not a measured finding about all players, and “universal consensus” would overstate it.

Why the reaction is getting attention now

Mass Effect 3 released in March 2012, so the “14 years” in the headline is simple elapsed time to the October 2026 reports, not a published statistic. VGTimes covered the same moment, framing it around Baker’s better-known work as Joel in The Last of Us. It corroborates the character and game context but is not a transcript of the video.

Kai Leng is Cerberus’s agent in Mass Effect 3, a recurring rival to Commander Shepard, and a long-running target of fan complaints. Baker’s willingness to laugh at the role is what makes the clip shareable.
