What appears on a PC—and whether Windows offers an uninstall button—depends on the installation, edition, policies, and updates. The examples below are candidates to consider only if they appear in your app list and you do not rely on them. Use Windows’ normal uninstall controls rather than removing system packages with broad commands.
How to judge whether an app is safe for you to remove
“Safe” depends on how you use the PC. Removing an app you never use may be reasonable; removing one that supports a feature, account, or workflow you rely on is not. Before uninstalling, check what the app does, whether you use it, and whether it can be reinstalled if you change your mind. Microsoft notes that some built-in apps cannot be removed through the usual controls.
The following are examples of optional apps that may be present on some Windows installations. They are not a guaranteed Windows inventory or a Microsoft-certified safe-to-remove list. If an app is missing, cannot be uninstalled, or is managed by your organization, do not try to force its removal.
12 apps to consider removing if you do not use them
-
Clipchamp
Keep it if you use it to edit or export videos. If you have another video editor and never open Clipchamp, it may be an uninstall candidate when Windows offers the option.

-
Xbox Game Bar

-
Microsoft Solitaire Collection

Maps can be useful for browsing maps and, where available, using downloaded maps offline. Do not remove it if you depend on those features; otherwise, consider it only if the uninstall control is available.
-
Microsoft To Do

-

Keep it if you record audio with the Windows app. If you never use it and have another recording method, check whether it can be uninstalled from your device.
-
Microsoft 365 (Office) app
This app can provide access to Microsoft 365 apps and files; its presence and role can vary. Keep it if you use it to find or open Office content. If you do not use it, verify the app name and check for an uninstall option before removing it.
These examples are not a promise that every app ships with every Windows version, or that uninstalling an app removes all of its related features or components. If a feature you use stops working, reinstall the app if Windows makes it available, or use your organization’s support channel on a managed PC.

Uninstall an app through Windows Settings
-
Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
-
Find the app you want to remove. Select the More button next to it, then choose Uninstall.
-
Follow any confirmation prompts. If Uninstall is not available, do not substitute a package-removal command; try another supported location or leave the app installed.
You can also open Start, select All apps, right-click an app, and choose Uninstall if that option appears. Microsoft also lists Control Panel > Programs and Features as an uninstall route. The available options differ by app. See Microsoft’s instructions for uninstalling or removing apps and programs in Windows.
Why some apps cannot be removed—and why PowerShell is not the next step
Some apps are built into Windows and cannot be uninstalled through the normal interface. Microsoft’s Appx troubleshooting guidance also describes checking whether a package is registered for the relevant user and whether it has a NonRemovable attribute.

PowerShell’s Remove-AppxPackage is a package-management tool, not a general cleanup shortcut. It can remove an app for a user; the -AllUsers option requires administrator permission. Microsoft warns that removal can be irreversible and that the right package and user context must be confirmed. Microsoft Store removal is unsupported. Avoid blanket commands that pipe every package into a removal command: they can target apps you did not intend to remove. Consult Microsoft’s Appx and Store app troubleshooting guidance before using package-management tools.
For IT administrators: removing apps is different from uninstalling one
Deployment tools and managed-device policies address different situations from a person removing an app on one PC. Removing an app’s provisioning from a Windows image affects whether it is installed for future user accounts; it does not, by itself, remove the app from accounts that already exist. Existing accounts require separate actions. Microsoft documents these distinctions in its guidance on sideloading apps with DISM and preinstalling apps with DISM.
Microsoft also documents policy-based removal for managed Windows devices. That is an administrator-controlled feature with edition, build, and management requirements—not a universal consumer uninstall option. The 2025 Microsoft Support article describes the policy for Windows 11 Enterprise and Education and says administrators must enable it. See Microsoft’s policy-based removal overview for its stated scope.
