You do not need a paid streaming subscription to find something worth watching. The trade-off is usually advertising, a smaller or rotating catalog, live-channel scheduling, regional availability, or library-card access.
These 12 services cover the main free options: ad-supported movie libraries, live-TV platforms, library services, and free sections inside larger rental or video platforms. Availability can change by country and device, so check the service’s current app or website before planning a movie night.

1. Tubi
Tubi is one of the simplest places to start if you want an on-demand catalog without paying for a subscription. Tubi describes its service as legal, ad-supported streaming with thousands of movies and TV shows. You do not need a subscription or credit card to begin watching.
On the current website, the useful entry points are Start Watching and Browse Titles. Tubi also displays Sign In and Register, so “free” does not mean that every feature is anonymous. An account may be useful for personalization, but it is not presented as a payment requirement.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Tubi supports the web, Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Samsung Smart TVs, Sony Smart TVs, and other listed platforms. Expect commercial breaks, and remember that the catalog is not identical in every country.
2. Pluto TV
Pluto TV is better understood as a free live-TV service than as a conventional movie library. Its current web experience opens on Live TV and uses a channel grid. Movies may be scheduled on channels rather than available whenever you want.
The checked /us/on-demand/movies address redirects to the Live TV interface, so old instructions that point to it as a permanent movie-only destination are unreliable. In the web guide, Up/Down moves between channels, Right/Left moves through time, Enter opens a selection, F adds or removes a favorite, and I displays details.
Choose Pluto TV when you like channel surfing and scheduled programming. Choose Tubi or a library service when you want to select a specific movie immediately.
3. The Roku Channel
The Roku Channel offers thousands of free movies and TV shows, Roku Originals, children’s content, and more than 350 live TV channels according to Roku’s support documentation.
It is not limited to Roku hardware. Roku lists access through Roku devices, the Roku Channel website, and the Roku mobile app. On a Roku device, open Home → Free or Featured Free to browse free programming.
Roku also provides a useful way to add other free services: open Home → Streaming Store → Top Free & TV, select an app, and choose Add app. This is helpful if you are comparing Tubi, Plex, Pluto TV, and other services from one television.
4. Plex
Plex is no longer only a tool for organizing video files stored on your own computer. Its free streaming section currently advertises more than 50,000 free on-demand titles and over 600 free live-TV channels.

- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
Look for the Free Live TV and Free Movies & Shows sections. Plex supports phones, tablets, PCs, smart TVs, and game consoles. For live channels, you can use Add to Favorites to make frequently watched channels easier to find.
Plex is a good all-purpose choice if you want both an on-demand catalog and a guide of live channels. Do not confuse the free catalog with Plex’s separate personal-media-server functions; you do not need your own media server to use the free streaming section.
5. Xumo Play
Xumo Play provides free live streaming across more than 300 channels. Xumo explicitly says that the basic Xumo Play service requires no sign-in, account, or credit card.
On the current web experience, look for Watch Xumo Play or Watch now. The service is primarily suited to viewers who want to choose a channel and watch whatever is currently airing, rather than search a large on-demand movie catalog.

6. Hoopla
Hoopla works through public libraries rather than through advertising. A participating library card gives you access to movies, TV, ebooks, audiobooks, comics, magazines, and music.
Open the site and choose GET STARTED, or use Log In if you already have an account. Hoopla says titles can be streamed immediately, and most titles can also be downloaded to a phone or tablet for offline use.
The catch is that your library controls the available catalog and borrowing rules. One library may offer a movie that another does not, and monthly borrowing limits can differ. If Hoopla rejects your card, check whether your library participates and whether it uses a separate digital-services login.

- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
7. Kanopy
Kanopy is another library- or institution-access service, not a universally open, ad-supported movie app. Access commonly depends on a participating public library, college, or other eligible institution.
Because eligibility, viewing limits, supported institutions, and current interface options vary, check Kanopy and your library’s digital-resources page before relying on it. You may need both an institution credential and a Kanopy account.
Kanopy is worth checking if you want films selected through an educational or library service rather than a large advertising-supported catalog. Your library’s collection determines whether it is useful.
8. YouTube Movies & TV
YouTube Movies & TV is YouTube’s dedicated movie and television destination. It is a practical place to check when you want to search a familiar interface, but do not assume that every title there is free.
Availability, pricing, and any free-to-watch selection can change by title and region. Check the individual movie page for its current viewing option before pressing play. Some titles may be rentals or purchases rather than free streams.
This service is therefore best treated as a movie marketplace with possible free content, not as a guaranteed free catalog like the basic offerings from Tubi or Xumo Play.
9. Fandango at Home
Fandango at Home has a free-content browse area alongside its rental and purchase offerings. The former FandangoNow destination currently redirects to a path under athome.fandango.com/content/browse/free.
The branding matters: calling the current service simply “Vudu” is outdated. When using the site, verify that a title is marked as free before starting playback; the same platform also offers paid rentals and purchases.

- Hides behind your TV: The all-new design plugs right into your TV with a simple setup

- Long-range Wi-Fi: Enjoy fast, smooth TV streaming in any room with a strong Wi-Fi connection, now up to 2x faster
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku Streaming Stick with the Roku remote
- Voice search & control: Quickly search, play entertainment, and control your streaming device with the voice remote
Because the current browse page did not expose a stable, verifiable catalog or set of menu labels, treat the free collection as something to browse directly rather than as a fixed list of titles.
10. FilmRise
FilmRise distributes free streaming programming across its own and partner destinations. Its current website separates Film and Television and includes sections such as New Releases, Our Catalog, True Crime, and Creators.
The catalog includes programming such as Medici, Brassic, Midsomer Murders, Forensic Files, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Unspeakable, and Hot Ones.
FilmRise does not establish one universal app route or promise that every listed title is free on every device. Use the official site to identify the available destination, then confirm the title’s playback terms on your particular platform.

11. ViX
ViX is especially relevant if you want Spanish-language entertainment. Its current site separates Películas (movies), Series, Premium, En vivo, Deportes, and Noticias.
The checked site currently redirects to the Spanish-language regional homepage at vix.com/es-es. Movie pages use the Ver ahora label. Availability, language, and the distinction between free and Premium programming depend on region.
Look for the free viewing option on an individual title rather than assuming that everything under ViX is included without payment. The Premium section is a separate paid offering.

Because the official Freestream page could not be reliably verified for current device support, account requirements, menu names, and catalog size, check Sling’s current page before installing it or creating an account. Those details can change as Sling updates the product.
It is a sensible service to compare with other free live-TV platforms, but the unverified details mean it should not be described as identical to Xumo Play or Pluto TV.
How to choose the right free movie app
- Want to pick a movie immediately? Start with Tubi, Plex, The Roku Channel, or a verified free section on Fandango at Home.
- Prefer live channels? Try Pluto TV, Xumo Play, Plex, or The Roku Channel. These services are closer to free cable than to a traditional on-demand library.
- Have a library card? Check Hoopla first, then Kanopy if your library or school participates.
- Want Spanish-language content? Check ViX, while remembering that region and Premium status affect what you can watch.
- Want to avoid creating an account? Xumo Play explicitly requires no sign-in, account, or credit card. Tubi does not require a subscription or credit card, but it still offers account registration. Library services require credentials.
- Are you using a smart TV? Check the TV’s app store for the service by name. Support can differ between a television model, a streaming stick, a game console, and a web browser.
What “free” means on these services
Free streaming does not always mean the same thing:
- Ad-supported: Tubi, Plex, Pluto TV, Xumo Play, and similar services pay for programming with advertising or sponsored channels.
- Library access: Hoopla and Kanopy depend on a participating institution and its catalog.
- Mixed free and paid catalog: YouTube Movies & TV and Fandango at Home may show free titles alongside rentals and purchases.
- Regional service: ViX and many other platforms change language, titles, and access by country.
Use official apps or websites, avoid pages promising newly released movies for free through unknown players, and never install a browser extension or APK just to bypass a service’s normal access rules.
FAQ
Which free movie app is best for on-demand viewing?
Tubi is a strong first choice because it offers thousands of movies and TV shows without a subscription or credit card. Plex, The Roku Channel, and library services such as Hoopla are also useful, depending on your location and eligibility.
Can I watch free movies without creating an account?
Yes, some services allow it. Xumo Play explicitly requires no sign-in, account, or credit card. Tubi does not require a subscription or credit card, but it provides Sign In and Register options. Hoopla requires a participating library card.
Is Pluto TV an on-demand movie service?
Not primarily. Pluto TV’s current web experience centers on Live TV and a channel grid. Movies may be scheduled on channels, and the checked movie URL redirects to the Live TV interface.
Is The Roku Channel available without a Roku device?
Yes. Roku documents access through Roku devices, the Roku Channel website, and the Roku mobile app.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Are Hoopla and Kanopy completely free?
They can be free to the user through a participating library or institution, but access is not universal. You need an eligible library or institutional account, and catalogs or viewing limits vary.
Is Fandango at Home the same as Vudu?
The current branding is Fandango at Home. The former FandangoNow destination redirects to Fandango’s free-content browse path, so referring to the current service simply as Vudu is outdated.
The Bottom Line
For the quickest no-cost starting point, try Tubi for on-demand titles, Pluto TV or Xumo Play for live channels, and Plex if you want both formats. If you have a library card, Hoopla may provide downloads as well as streaming, while Kanopy is worth checking for institution-supported access. Keep an eye on ads, regional restrictions, account requirements, and whether a title is actually free rather than a rental.
