If your Windows laptop is unusually hot, its fan is loud, or it slows down or shuts off, start by clearing its vents and reducing unnecessary workload. Heat and fan activity can be normal during gaming, streaming, or other sustained heavy use; warmth alone does not prove a fault. Use the steps below from lowest risk to more involved troubleshooting, and stop using the laptop if you see battery swelling, smell burning or chemicals, or find it dangerously hot after shutdown.
How do I fix overheating on a Windows laptop?
Work through these fixes in order. The first three address airflow; the next steps help identify excess workload or model-specific settings. If overheating continues when the laptop is idle, or it repeatedly shuts down, move to diagnostics and service rather than making unfamiliar firmware changes.
1. Put it on a hard, level surface
Use a desk or stable lap desk instead of a bed, blanket, couch, pillow, or other soft surface. Fabric can cover an intake vent and restrict cooling. HP and Dell both identify obstructed airflow as a cause of overheating: HP’s overheating guidance and Dell’s thermal troubleshooting guidance.
2. Clear the vents and give the laptop room to breathe
Move objects away from the intake and exhaust vents, and avoid direct sunlight or a hot room. HP recommends a cool environment and at least 15.25 cm (6 in) of clearance around each vent. That is HP’s guidance, not a universal spacing requirement for every laptop; check your model’s manual.

3. Clean dust from the external vents
Shut down the laptop and disconnect its power adapter before cleaning. HP describes using canned air at the vents without opening the computer. Follow the maintenance instructions for your exact model. If a fan is damaged or debris cannot be reached externally, consult the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider rather than improvising internal disassembly.
Why is my laptop fan so loud?
A fan speeds up to remove heat. Sustained processor or graphics work, restricted airflow, dust, or background applications can make it run harder. A loud fan during demanding work is not automatically evidence of a defect; look at what the laptop is doing and whether the noise persists at idle.

4. Find applications using too much CPU
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes, then select the CPU column to sort by use.
- When the laptop is otherwise idle, note any process that stays near the top. Close an app you recognize and do not need. For third-party software, check with its publisher for an update or settings change.
A high-CPU process is not automatically malware; identify it before taking action. Dell and HP include workload checks in their troubleshooting advice.
5. Reduce unnecessary startup and background work
In Task Manager, review Startup apps on Windows 11 or Startup on Windows 10. Disable only programs that do not need to launch automatically. Dell specifically cautions against disabling antivirus or anti-malware software at startup.

6. Use a less demanding power mode
Open Settings > System > Power & battery in Windows 11, or Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings in Windows 10, and choose a less performance-intensive option such as Balanced or Best power efficiency where available. The exact labels and choices vary by Windows build and laptop.
7. Lower settings for demanding games or applications
If the heat appears mainly during gaming, video work, or another sustained intensive task, close unneeded apps and reduce the game’s resolution or graphics settings. Dell explains that thermal throttling reduces processor or graphics-chip speed to lower heat output. Throttling under heavy work can be built-in protection, not proof of a hardware fault; Dell states, “Throttling by itself does not indicate a fault.”

Which manufacturer settings and updates should I check?
8. Check the laptop’s thermal profile
Some laptops offer cooling or thermal profiles in a manufacturer utility or BIOS. Supported HP computers may offer a quiet thermal profile in HP Command Center; Lenovo describes model-dependent power or operating modes for certain ThinkPads. Dell notes that a BIOS thermal setting can override a Windows software profile. Names and availability differ by model, so use the laptop’s own guide and do not change unfamiliar BIOS settings.
9. Install applicable Windows, driver, and BIOS updates
Use Settings > Windows Update to check for Windows updates. For drivers and BIOS updates, use the laptop maker’s official support page or update utility for the exact model. Confirm that an update applies to your device and follow the manufacturer’s instructions—especially for BIOS updates, which should not be interrupted.

When should I run diagnostics or get the laptop serviced?
10. Run the manufacturer’s fan or hardware diagnostics
Use the diagnostic tool provided for your exact laptop. On supported Dell systems, the preboot ePSA diagnostic can test fans. Record any error code and follow Dell’s support instructions. A passed fan test does not rule out every cooling problem; a failed test is a reason to pursue service.
11. Escalate persistent problems—and stop immediately for safety signs
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider if the fan does not spin, grinds or rattles, diagnostics fail, or the laptop continues to overheat, lock up, or shut down after you have addressed airflow and workload.
For a swollen or deformed chassis, keyboard, or trackpad; a burning or chemical smell; or a laptop that remains too hot to touch after shutdown, Dell advises turning it off, disconnecting the adapter, stopping use, and contacting support. Do not open the laptop or remove a swollen battery yourself.
How can I tell whether the heat is normal?
Consider the trigger and the symptoms together. Warmth and fan activity during continuous use, streaming, gaming, or other demanding work can be normal. More concerning signs include overheating while idle, repeated shutdowns, a fan that stops or makes grinding noises, failed diagnostics, or visible battery deformation. Dell’s support page, published in May 2026, gives a recommended room temperature of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F); check your model’s manual for its applicable operating limits.
A cooling pad may provide supplemental airflow, but it is not a guaranteed fix and cannot replace clearing blocked vents or repairing failed hardware.
