PhonePe is the best all-round online payment app in India for most everyday users in 2026, based on its documented combination of UPI transfers, QR payments, bills, recharges, FASTag, and payment history. But the right choice depends on your use case: Google Pay is more focused, Paytm bundles more services, BHIM keeps UPI central, Amazon Pay suits Amazon shoppers, and MobiKwik Pocket UPI is designed for wallet-funded payments.
This guide compares the major options by fit rather than claiming that one app is universally fastest, safest, or most rewarding. Features, rewards, credit products, supported banks, and rollout status can change.
For most people, PhonePe is the best all-round online payment app in India in 2026 because its documented feature set covers UPI transfers, QR payments, bills, recharges, FASTag, transaction history, and related payment services. However, there is no single best app for every user. Google Pay is a better fit for a focused UPI experience, Paytm suits users who want payments plus travel and other services, BHIM is the most direct official UPI-first option, and MobiKwik Pocket UPI is useful when you want to pay from a wallet instead of directly from your primary bank account.
This is a use-case comparison rather than a universal performance ranking. UPI is a standardized payment network used across the ecosystem; the main differences between apps are their interface, support experience, additional services, wallet or credit features, rewards, eligibility, and integration with services you already use.

NPCI’s May 2026 statistics reported 720 banks live on UPI and more than 23.2 billion monthly transactions. Those figures can change, but they illustrate why choosing an app is usually about convenience and ecosystem fit rather than gaining access to a completely different payment network.
Quick comparison: the best payment apps in India
| App or feature | Best for | Why consider it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| PhonePe | Most everyday payments | Broad combination of UPI, QR, bills, recharges, FASTag, and payment history | “Best all-rounder” describes feature breadth, not a measured success-rate or support ranking |
| Google Pay | A focused mainstream UPI experience | Simple India-focused payments and support for banks that support BHIM UPI | Do not assume it has the fastest payments or highest rewards |
| Paytm | Payments plus everyday services | UPI, recharges, bills, FASTag, metro, bookings, card bills, and merchant tools | Its wider service bundle may feel excessive if you only need basic UPI |
| BHIM | A straightforward UPI-first app | Simple UPI transactions, history, collect requests, and declined-transaction complaints | It should not be assumed to offer every marketplace, wallet, or rewards feature of other apps |
| Amazon Pay | Frequent Amazon shoppers | Amazon-linked checkout, Amazon Pay UPI, and Amazon Pay Balance | Balance, UPI, and merchant QR acceptance are separate parts of the service |
| Payments inside conversations | UPI payments within chats and a phased mobile-recharge rollout | Payment and recharge availability can depend on account, device, app version, and rollout status | |
| MobiKwik Pocket UPI | Wallet-funded UPI payments | Pay eligible QR codes, contacts, mobile numbers, and UPI IDs from wallet funds | It is a MobiKwik feature using wallet funds, not a separate payment network |
| CRED | Certain credit-card-focused users | Credit-card bill payments alongside CRED UPI, QR, VPA, and related payment features | It is aimed mainly at eligible CRED members; rewards and eligibility can change |
| Airtel Thanks | Airtel subscribers | UPI combined with mobile, DTH, broadband, and utility-bill management | Its strongest advantage is the Airtel ecosystem, especially for Airtel customers |
| MobiKwik UPI | Conventional bank-linked UPI inside MobiKwik | Direct bank-linked transfers, UPI handles, merchant payments, and bill splitting | This is another MobiKwik payment mode, not a separate app download |
| UPI Tap & Pay-enabled apps | Compatible NFC tap-to-pay situations | NFC-based payments with a compatible phone and supported Smart QR or NFC tag | Support is limited and device- and merchant-dependent; it is not a reason for everyone to buy a new phone |
1. PhonePe — best all-rounder for everyday UPI and bills
PhonePe is the strongest general recommendation when you want one app for ordinary household and person-to-person payments. Its documented functions include transfers to UPI IDs, mobile numbers, and bank accounts; QR-code payments; bank-balance and transaction-history checks; utility bills; mobile recharges; FASTag services; and credit-card-related features.
That breadth makes it suitable for a typical combination of sending money to family, paying a local shop, checking whether a transaction completed, recharging a phone, and paying electricity or other utility bills. It is also a practical choice for users who do not want separate apps for each of those tasks.
Choose PhonePe if: you want broad everyday coverage in one place.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not infer: the available product information does not prove that PhonePe has the highest success rate, fastest processing, or best customer support. Those would require independently measured, dated comparisons.
2. Google Pay — best for a focused mainstream UPI experience
Google Pay is a good fit for users who want a mainstream app centered primarily on payments rather than a large travel, shopping, or service marketplace. Its India product positioning focuses on payments through banks that support BHIM UPI and also highlights India-specific payment and credit features.
The focused design can appeal to someone who mainly sends money, pays merchants by QR, and wants a familiar interface without making bookings or shopping the main part of the experience. As with every UPI app, the actual account setup depends on a supported bank, the mobile number linked to that bank account, and the device’s ability to complete verification.
Choose Google Pay if: you prefer a familiar, relatively focused UPI app.
Do not infer: its mainstream position is not evidence that it is faster, more reliable, or more rewarding than every competing app.
3. Paytm — best for payments plus an everyday-services ecosystem
Paytm goes beyond basic UPI transfers. Its current product materials describe UPI transfers, QR payments, mobile and utility recharges, FASTag and metro recharges, travel and entertainment bookings, credit-card bill payments, and merchant products such as QR codes, Soundbox devices, card machines, and payment gateways.
This makes Paytm a better match for users who want payments combined with a wider set of services. A person who regularly manages recharges, transport-related payments, bookings, and card bills may value that breadth more than someone who only needs a simple UPI interface.
Choose Paytm if: you want one account for UPI and several adjacent consumer services, or you are a merchant evaluating payment acceptance tools.

- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
- Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
- Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.
Trade-off: the broader ecosystem can add complexity if your only requirement is sending and receiving money.
4. BHIM — best for a straightforward official UPI-first experience
BHIM is NPCI’s own UPI-focused app. NPCI describes it as supporting simple UPI transactions, transaction-history checks, collect requests, and complaints relating to declined transactions.
BHIM is worth considering when you want an app whose editorial center is UPI itself rather than shopping, travel, a wallet, or a large rewards program. It can also be a useful second app for troubleshooting or for users who prefer a direct UPI-first product.
Choose BHIM if: you want a simple, official UPI-oriented option and do not need a large collection of extra services.
Trade-off: do not assume that BHIM supports every feature available in third-party apps. Bank support and particular functions should be checked during setup.
5. Amazon Pay — best for people who already use Amazon
Amazon Pay makes the most sense when Amazon is already part of your regular shopping routine. Its India documentation covers Amazon Pay UPI, Amazon Pay Balance, one-click online payments, and merchant dynamic QR acceptance.
For consumers, the key benefit is the connection between payment choices and Amazon checkout. You may also prefer it if keeping a balance for eligible Amazon Pay transactions is convenient. These are different mechanisms: Amazon Pay UPI uses UPI, Amazon Pay Balance is a stored-value product, and merchant dynamic QR acceptance is an acceptance feature rather than a consumer wallet benefit.
Choose Amazon Pay if: you frequently shop on Amazon and want payment options closely integrated with that account.
Trade-off: it is less compelling as a general-purpose recommendation if you do not use Amazon’s ecosystem regularly.
6. WhatsApp — best for payments inside conversations
WhatsApp Payments in India is a UPI service developed with NPCI and supported banks. Its main convenience is contextual: you can pay from the same messaging environment where you are already chatting with a contact or group.
In April 2026, Meta announced a clearer payments entry point and prepaid mobile recharges for Jio, Airtel, and Vi, with a phased rollout for Android and iOS. Because that rollout is phased, a feature announced for WhatsApp may not appear for every account immediately.
Choose WhatsApp if: you want to send a payment or, where available, recharge a supported mobile connection without switching away from your messaging app.

Check first: availability may depend on your account, phone, operating-system version, WhatsApp version, bank, and rollout status.
7. MobiKwik Pocket UPI — best for wallet-based UPI and spending separation
MobiKwik’s Pocket UPI lets users pay QR codes, contacts, mobile numbers, and UPI IDs from wallet funds without linking the primary bank account for each payment. MobiKwik positions this as useful for budgeting, separating routine spending, reducing clutter in the main bank statement, and limiting repeated exposure of primary banking details.
The distinction matters. Pocket UPI is a wallet-funded payment mode; it is not the same as sending money directly from a linked bank account through ordinary UPI. You should understand how funds are added to the wallet, whether the intended merchant or payment flow is supported, and what terms or limits apply before relying on it.
Choose Pocket UPI if: you prefer to keep a defined spending balance or separate small everyday payments from your primary bank account.

8. CRED — best for eligible members who focus on credit-card payments
CRED is a targeted recommendation rather than the default UPI app for everyone. Its product information and terms describe CRED UPI, QR and VPA payments, linked bank accounts, credit-card bill payments, rent-related payments, collect requests, payment aliases, and CRED-specific rewards or experiences.
The app is most relevant when credit-card management is already a central part of your financial routine. Paying card bills and making other supported payments in one place may be more useful to you than having the broadest possible recharge or booking catalogue.
Choose CRED if: you are an eligible CRED member and want credit-card bill management alongside UPI features.

Trade-off: membership eligibility, rewards, payment options, and terms are not guaranteed to remain unchanged. Treat any reward as conditional and check the current terms rather than choosing the app solely for a promotional benefit.
9. Airtel Thanks — best for Airtel customers managing payments and recharges
Airtel Thanks combines UPI with Airtel’s telecom services. Its documented features include creating a UPI ID, transfers by contact or VPA, QR scanning, mobile and DTH recharges, utility bills, broadband services, and AutoPay-related functions.
Its strongest differentiator is not a fundamentally different payment rail; it is the convenience of managing Airtel-related services and payments in the same ecosystem. That can reduce app switching for an Airtel subscriber who pays for mobile, DTH, or broadband services.
Choose Airtel Thanks if: you are an Airtel customer and want UPI, recharges, and Airtel bill management together.

- App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).
Trade-off: a non-Airtel user may not receive the same ecosystem benefit, so this is a more targeted choice than PhonePe, Google Pay, or BHIM.
10. MobiKwik UPI — best for conventional bank-linked UPI inside MobiKwik
MobiKwik also offers ordinary bank-linked UPI. In this mode, the bank account is linked for direct transfers, merchant payments, UPI-handle payments, and supported bill-splitting use cases.
This entry is deliberately separated from Pocket UPI because the funding source is different:
- MobiKwik UPI: links a bank account for direct UPI transfers and payments.
- Pocket UPI: uses wallet funds for supported payments without using the primary bank account for every transaction.
Both modes may exist inside the MobiKwik app. You do not need to install two unrelated apps, and you should select the mode based on whether you want direct bank-linked UPI or wallet-funded spending.

11. UPI Tap & Pay-enabled apps — best for compatible NFC situations
UPI Tap & Pay is a feature-led option rather than a universal app recommendation. NPCI describes it as an NFC-based flow requiring an NFC-capable phone and a compatible UPI Smart QR or Smart NFC tag.
NPCI’s current page lists seven live apps for this feature: BHIM, BHIM PNB, BHIM SBI, Axis Pay, Canara ai1, TimePay, and Paytm for limited users. The list and availability can change, so verify the current support list before buying a phone or relying on tap payments.
Choose this option if: you have an NFC-capable device, encounter a supported Smart QR or NFC tag, and your app and account are included in the relevant rollout.
Do not buy hardware solely for it: Tap & Pay is a limited compatibility feature. Most users can continue using ordinary UPI IDs, QR codes, contacts, and mobile numbers without NFC.
Which payment app should you choose?
Use this decision guide instead of treating the list as a strict ranking:
- Need one general-purpose app? Start with PhonePe because its documented feature coverage is broad.
- Want a focused mainstream UPI experience? Consider Google Pay.
- Need bookings, metro, FASTag, recharges, bills, or merchant services? Paytm has the broadest documented adjacent-services positioning in this list.
- Want an official UPI-first option? Try BHIM.
- Shop frequently on Amazon? Amazon Pay is the logical ecosystem choice.
- Want to pay while chatting? WhatsApp is useful if the payment feature is enabled for your account.
- Want to separate routine spending from your main bank account? Look at MobiKwik Pocket UPI and understand its wallet terms.
- Manage several credit cards? CRED may be more relevant if you are an eligible member.
- Use Airtel services? Airtel Thanks can combine those bills and recharges with UPI.
- Want MobiKwik but direct bank payments? Use its conventional MobiKwik UPI mode rather than Pocket UPI.
- Need NFC tap payments? Check the current Tap & Pay app list, your phone’s NFC support, and merchant compatibility before deciding.
How to start using a UPI payment app safely
- Install the official app. Use the verified listing in your phone’s official app store or begin from the company’s official website. Avoid APK files, unsolicited links, and lookalike apps.
- Use the mobile number linked to your bank account. During setup, the app may verify the SIM through an SMS or another bank-registration process. A mismatched number can prevent account discovery.
- Select a supported bank account. Confirm that the bank account shown in the app is yours and that the app has found the intended account.
- Create or enter your UPI ID. The exact label differs by app. You may also be able to use a mobile number, contact, QR code, or other UPI handle.
- Set or use your UPI PIN privately. The PIN authorizes a transaction. It is not a password to share with a caller, merchant, support agent, or family member.
- Make a small test payment first. Confirm the recipient’s displayed name and the amount before entering the PIN. Check the transaction history afterward.
UPI safety rules that apply to every app
- Never share your UPI PIN, OTP, card PIN, or screen-lock code. Legitimate support does not need you to disclose these credentials.
- Check the recipient and amount before approving. A familiar name in your contacts does not guarantee that the displayed UPI address is correct.
- Treat unsolicited collect requests as suspicious. A collect request asks you to authorize a payment; reject requests you do not recognize.
- Remember that entering a UPI PIN normally authorizes a debit. If someone says you must enter your PIN to receive money, stop and recheck the screen.
- Do not assume a QR code is harmless. Scan only codes from a trusted recipient and confirm the name shown by the app.
- Review permissions and privacy choices. Payment apps can differ in the data they request, the services they bundle, and how they present optional features.
- Keep the app, operating system, and screen lock updated. Use device security features and avoid making payments from a rooted or compromised phone.
- Save transaction records. Keep the transaction ID, date, amount, recipient, and status when a payment matters.
What to do when a payment fails or remains pending
If the status says pending
Do not immediately make the same payment again. First check the app’s transaction history and your bank statement. A duplicate retry can create two debits if the first transaction later completes. Follow the app’s status or support flow, and contact the bank or payment provider with the transaction ID if the status does not resolve.
If the payment is declined
Check the network connection, the SIM and mobile number used for bank verification, the linked account, available balance, bank restrictions, and any applicable transaction limits. If the app provides a declined-transaction complaint option, use it. You can also check whether the bank itself is experiencing an outage before switching apps.

Do not assume that a UPI transfer can simply be cancelled after authorization, and do not send another payment to a stranger claiming they can reverse the first one.
If you suspect fraud
Contact your bank and the payment app through their official support channels immediately. Secure the account and device, preserve screenshots and transaction records, and do not continue communicating through an unsolicited phone number or chat claiming to be support.
UPI app, wallet, and payment service: the differences
Many comparisons become confusing because they treat every payment feature as identical. The following distinctions are more useful:
- Bank-linked UPI: money is transferred directly through a UPI-linked bank account after authentication with the UPI PIN.
- Wallet-funded payments: the payment is funded from a stored wallet balance, as with MobiKwik Pocket UPI’s described model. Wallet loading, usage, and eligibility can have separate terms.
- Stored balance for checkout: Amazon Pay Balance is different from Amazon Pay UPI even though both appear under the Amazon Pay brand.
- Credit-card bill payment: paying a credit-card bill through an app does not mean that every merchant payment in that app is funded by a credit card. Check the individual payment flow.
- Merchant acceptance: QR stands, NFC tags, Soundbox devices, card machines, and payment gateways are tools for businesses receiving payments, not requirements for ordinary consumers sending money.
Do you need an NFC phone or a physical QR product?
Usually, no. A regular supported smartphone is sufficient for common UPI tasks such as sending money to a UPI ID, paying a QR code, checking transaction history, and paying bills. NFC matters only for compatible Tap & Pay scenarios.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

But NPCI’s limited live-app list and the requirement for compatible hardware and acceptance infrastructure make this a specialized feature, not a general buying criterion.
Similarly, a UPI QR stand, NFC tag, Smart QR accessory, or POS/card reader is primarily a merchant-acceptance product. These products may be relevant to a shop owner, but they do not help most consumers decide which payment app to install.
What can change after publication?
Payment apps are frequently updated, and the following details should be rechecked before relying on them:
- Current app availability and supported banks
- UPI transaction volume, value, and live-bank statistics
- WhatsApp payment and mobile-recharge rollout status
- The current UPI Tap & Pay app list and device requirements
- Rewards, cashback, wallet, credit, and bill-payment eligibility
- Transaction limits, authentication rules, and complaint procedures
UPI is regulated and standardized at the ecosystem level, but app-level support, permissions, rewards, credit products, and available features vary. NPCI’s rules and product framework continue to evolve, so check the current in-app terms and official support documentation for any feature that affects your money.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a bank account to use an online payment app in India?
Most mainstream UPI apps can be used with a bank account whose registered mobile number matches the SIM used during setup. The exact list of supported banks and available features varies by app. Wallet-funded options such as MobiKwik Pocket UPI use wallet funds for supported payments, so they should not be treated as identical to direct bank-linked UPI.
Are all UPI payment apps basically the same?
No. UPI works across participating apps on the same underlying payment ecosystem. You can choose an app based on its interface, services, wallet or credit features, support options, and compatibility with your bank. Do not assume that switching apps will solve a bank-side outage or guarantee a better transaction result.
Can I use two UPI apps on the same phone?
No. You can use more than one app, but each app and bank account setup must be handled carefully. Keep track of which UPI ID is connected to which account, and check the recipient name and transaction status before retrying a failed or pending payment.
Do I need an NFC phone for UPI payments?
Only if your phone supports NFC, the app is in the current supported Tap & Pay list, and the merchant has compatible Smart QR or NFC acceptance infrastructure. NPCI’s listed apps include BHIM, BHIM PNB, BHIM SBI, Axis Pay, Canara ai1, TimePay, and Paytm for limited users; availability can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat is the safest way to use a UPI payment app?
Treat an unknown collect request or payment approval screen as suspicious. Check the recipient and amount, and remember that entering your UPI PIN authorizes a transaction. Never share your UPI PIN or OTP with a caller, merchant, or supposed support representative.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose PhonePe for the broadest everyday feature set, Google Pay for a focused mainstream UPI experience, Paytm for payments plus services, BHIM for a direct UPI-first approach, Amazon Pay for Amazon shoppers, WhatsApp for in-chat payments, MobiKwik Pocket UPI for wallet-funded spending, CRED for eligible credit-card-focused users, and Airtel Thanks for Airtel subscribers. Treat Tap & Pay as a limited compatibility feature—not a universal reason to change apps or buy a new phone.
