For a first container, start with Docker’s official Get Started tutorial or Docker 101. For a structured developer curriculum, use Docker’s eight-hour Basics, Build and Compose path. Once you have a project, switch to the task-specific guides, the official GitHub tutorial or focused advanced courses. This editorial shortlist covers eleven distinct ways to learn Docker, from free documentation and browser labs to paid video courses and books. “Best” depends on your starting point, preferred format and immediate goal; the available sources do not establish a universally measured ranking.

The recommendations below were selected for clear scope, practical work, relevance to beginners or advanced users, installation requirements and visible information about access or updates. Course availability, versions and pricing can change, so verify those details on the linked provider page before enrolling.

Which Docker tutorial should you choose?

If you have never run a container

Use Get Started first if you want installation guidance and a choice of next steps. Choose Docker 101 if you prefer an interactive introduction that reaches beyond the first container into volumes, Compose and networking. Both are official and form a sensible first week.

If you are building an application

Follow the Docker Developer learning path when you want one sequence from Dockerfiles through local development, tests, GitHub Actions, Compose and local Kubernetes. Docker’s estimate is eight hours, but your hands-on time will depend on how much you change in the exercises.

If you have a specific stack or problem

Go directly to the task-specific guides. They are organized around the question you actually need to solve—such as connecting a database, adding CI/CD, securing an image or deploying an application—rather than forcing you through unrelated fundamentals.

If you need practice without configuring a machine

Try a Docker lab or Play with Docker. Browser labs reduce setup friction, but they are not a substitute for learning how Docker behaves on your own workstation. Availability and requirements can change, so read the current lab instructions first.

If you learn best from a complete project

The Getting Started GitHub tutorial gives you a repository, commands and an application to modify. It is particularly useful after an introductory lesson because it brings together bind mounts, volumes, networking, Compose, build caching and multi-stage builds.

If you want a longer paid curriculum

KodeKloud is the clearest provider-run progression in this list. Bret Fisher’s Docker Mastery offers a wide instructor-led scope, while the Docker Captain catalog helps you find focused subjects such as Swarm or DevOps. Compare the current syllabi rather than assuming a course’s title guarantees coverage of the Docker release you use.

A practical learning sequence

  1. Install and verify. Use Docker’s Get Started page to choose Docker Desktop or Engine for your operating system, then run the page’s verification command.
  2. Run one container. Complete the first Docker 101 or Get Started exercise. Concentrate on the difference between an image (the packaged artifact) and a container (a running instance).
  3. Persist and connect data. Continue through volumes, bind mounts and networking. These topics explain why data can disappear when a container is replaced and how services communicate.
  4. Build your own image. Write a Dockerfile, build it locally and make the smallest useful change. The developer path and GitHub tutorial both provide a progression for this.
  5. Compose a multi-service app. Use Compose to describe services, networks and volumes in one file. Then practice changing one service without rebuilding everything.
  6. Add delivery and operations. Study tests, GitHub Actions, security, administration and deployment through the developer path and the relevant official guides.
  7. Specialize. Choose a Captain course, KodeKloud module, Docker Scout or Build Cloud material when your project exposes a specific gap.

How to study efficiently

Keep a disposable practice project

Use a small web service and database, not a production repository. Rebuild images, remove containers, inspect logs and deliberately break a mount or environment variable. Safe repetition teaches lifecycle behavior faster than reading command lists.

Record the result of each exercise

For every tutorial, save the Dockerfile, Compose file and the exact command that produced the expected output. Note your Docker Desktop or Engine version and operating system; a later error is easier to diagnose when the environment is documented.

Move from copy-paste to explanation

After an exercise works, change one variable: expose a different port, replace a bind mount with a named volume or add a health check. If you cannot predict the effect, return to the relevant guide instead of stacking more commands.

Common learning problems and fixes

“Docker command not found”

Docker is not installed, the daemon is not running or your shell cannot see the executable. Reopen Docker Desktop if you use it, verify the installation instructions for your operating system and run the tutorial’s version command before continuing.

Permission denied on Linux

Your user may not be allowed to access the Docker socket. Follow the current Linux post-install instructions in Docker’s documentation, then start a new login session. Do not blindly change socket permissions on a shared machine.

Port already in use

Another process or container owns the host port. List running containers, stop the conflicting one or change only the host-side port mapping in your Compose file. Keep the container’s internal service port unchanged unless the application itself listens elsewhere.

Changes vanish after restarting

Data written inside a container’s writable layer is tied to that container. Add a named volume for database or user data, or a bind mount when you need live source-code editing. The 101 and GitHub tutorials demonstrate both patterns.

The browser lab does not load

Browser labs can expire, require an account or temporarily be unavailable. Confirm the current Play with Docker instructions; if the exercise needs persistence or custom networking, install Docker locally and run the same commands there.

Optional: capture clean screenshots of Docker documentation

If you are documenting a tutorial, release note or runbook, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and bills only clean shots. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

A single request can capture a Docker guide as an image or PDF:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://docs.docker.com/get-started/ -o docker-guide.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options, including full-page and element capture, device presets, dark mode, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, geolocation, PDF settings, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks and bulk capture.
