For most office work, 60Hz is enough. A 100Hz monitor can make scrolling, cursor movement and other on-screen motion look smoother, so it may be worth choosing if you notice and enjoy that difference. But the available evidence does not show that moving from 60Hz to 100Hz generally improves office productivity or prevents eye strain.

What changes when you move from 60Hz to 100Hz?

Refresh rate is how many times per second a display updates its image: a 60Hz monitor refreshes 60 times per second. A higher rate can make moving content look smoother. Ana Marta Carvalho, a senior program manager on Microsoft’s Graphics Team, described higher refresh rates as making motion feel smoother, including inking and touch, in a 2021 Microsoft DirectX post.

The difference is most noticeable when something moves: scrolling a long page, dragging a window, moving the pointer or watching an animation. A static email, document or spreadsheet does not gain much from refreshing more often. Microsoft’s DirectX post gives email and document writing as examples of tasks that can run at 60Hz in a supported 60/120Hz Dynamic Refresh Rate mode.

Is 100Hz useful for everyday office tasks?

It can make interaction feel more fluid, but that is a comfort and preference benefit—not a demonstrated increase in work output. ITPro characterizes the higher-refresh effects in day-to-day office use as not transformative in its business monitor guide, dated March 13, 2026. If you mostly read, type and work with still images, 60Hz is generally adequate. If you frequently scroll or move content and prefer the smoother feel, 100Hz can be a worthwhile feature.

A Dell Technologies-hosted report recounts a 2020 study in which observers judged motion shown at 120Hz to be smoother and sharper than motion at 60Hz 94% of the time. That result is about perception in a 120Hz-versus-60Hz comparison; it does not measure office productivity and does not establish the same result for 100Hz. The cited study is Denes, Jindal, Mikhailiuk and Mantiuk, “A perceptual model of motion quality for rendering with adaptive refresh rate and resolution,” ACM Transactions on Graphics 39 (2020), article 133. See the Dell-hosted report.

Does a 100Hz monitor reduce eye strain?

Do not buy one on the assumption that 100Hz itself will prevent eye strain. Microsoft discusses reduced eye strain and fatigue as a possible benefit in the context of minimizing flicker and ghosting, while MSI makes eye-care and anti-flicker claims for its PRO MP2412W. Those claims do not establish that a 100Hz refresh rate by itself reduces eye strain compared with 60Hz for office users. Comfort can depend on other monitor characteristics and your setup, too.

What should you compare besides refresh rate?

Refresh rate is only one part of whether a monitor suits your desk and work. Compare the features that affect fit, image and connectivity:

  • Resolution and screen size: Check whether the available workspace and text sharpness suit the work you do.
  • Panel type: Consider the display characteristics you value, rather than treating a higher refresh rate as a substitute.
  • Ergonomics: Check stand adjustments and whether the monitor can be positioned comfortably.
  • Ports and cables: Confirm that your computer and cable support the desired resolution and refresh rate. Some combinations limit the available rate, as ITPro cautions.
  • Warranty and price: Weigh these alongside refresh rate; the sources do not establish a universal reason for every office buyer to prefer 100Hz.

For a concrete example, MSI lists its PRO MP2412W as a 23.8-inch VA business monitor with 1920 × 1080 resolution and a 100Hz refresh rate. MSI also describes the product as having Eye Care and anti-flicker features; those are manufacturer claims, not proof that 100Hz prevents eye strain.

How to check whether your computer can use 100Hz

The monitor, computer output, ports and cable all affect which refresh-rate and resolution combinations are available. In Windows, check the rate after connecting the display:

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Select the monitor you want to check.
  3. Inspect the available refresh rates and choose a supported option.
  4. Confirm the selected rate and resolution. Microsoft notes that an asterisk beside a listed rate means it does not support the current resolution; selecting an unsupported combination may cause the resolution to change.

Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 and explains that the options shown depend on the display’s support.

Will Windows Dynamic Refresh Rate work with a 100Hz monitor?

Not according to Microsoft’s current requirements. Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate requires a variable refresh rate (VRR) display capable of at least 120Hz, so a 100Hz monitor does not meet that stated threshold. Dynamic Refresh Rate is a separate Windows feature, not a benefit to assume comes with any monitor above 60Hz. See Microsoft’s refresh-rate guidance.

How to decide between 60Hz and 100Hz

  • Choose 60Hz if your work is mostly static, the monitor otherwise suits your needs, and you do not particularly notice or value smoother motion.
  • Consider 100Hz if you often scroll or move content and prefer the smoother feel, provided your computer and connection support the desired mode.
  • Do not pay extra solely for promised productivity or eye-health gains: the cited sources do not establish those outcomes for a 60Hz-to-100Hz office-monitor upgrade.
