For a 1Password account, the main backup is the service’s own daily server backup: 1Password says it backs up account vaults and items stored on its servers. You can sign in on another device and restore earlier versions of items, but that is not the same as keeping your own offline vault archive. If you need a portable copy, export from the app and handle the resulting plaintext file as a secret. The Emergency Kit, recovery codes, and family or team recovery help restore account access; they do not contain your vault.
What “backing up 1Password” can mean
There are three different protections to distinguish:
- Service-side data recovery: 1Password says it backs up account vaults and items on its servers daily. This is 1Password’s description of its own service, not an independent audit or an uptime guarantee. 1Password backups
- A user-controlled data file: You can export data from supported apps. The exported files are unencrypted plaintext, so they need stronger handling than an ordinary document. Export your data from the 1Password apps
- Account-access recovery: An Emergency Kit, recovery code, or administrator-assisted recovery can help you sign in again, but none is a copy of vault contents. Emergency Kit Recovery codes Family or team recovery
These methods solve different problems. A lost device, a deleted item, a forgotten password, and a need to move data to another service do not have the same recovery path.

1. Understand the account-side backup
1Password Support says data on its servers—including account vaults and items—is backed up every day. This is the service-side safeguard for data stored in your account. It is not a user-held copy, and the support statement should not be read as a guarantee that every kind of loss or deletion can be reversed. 1Password backups

2. Sign in on another device
If your phone or computer is lost or damaged, install the 1Password app on another device and sign in to your account to access your data. This is a continuity measure using the same account, not an independent backup. Keep your sign-in details and recovery options accessible so device loss does not become account lockout. 1Password backups
3. Restore an earlier version of an item
When an item has been changed or its contents need to be rolled back, 1Password’s backup guidance says you can restore a previous version of that item. This applies to item history; it does not mean that a deleted vault can be restored. 1Password backups

4. Archive items instead of deleting a vault
Deleting an account vault is permanent, according to 1Password. If your goal is to clear items from daily view or preserve them without keeping them active, archive the items rather than deleting the entire vault. Archiving is a prevention choice, not a backup. 1Password backups

For 1Password 8 desktop, the documented export formats are 1PUX and CSV. CSV contains only a subset of fields; 1PUX is the listed choice when you need more fields, including data that CSV omits, such as linked items and custom fields. Export availability and options differ by app, operating system, account setup, and version, so follow the instructions for the app you actually use. Export your data from the 1Password apps

- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
6. Protect and remove the exported file
1Password warns that exported data files are unencrypted plaintext. Anyone who can read the file may be able to read the secrets it contains. Do not email it or store it online; keep access restricted, and delete it when you are finished. Also consider whether backup software could copy a temporary export. In instructions for importing from an older password manager, 1Password advises temporarily disabling backup software before exporting to avoid backing up an unencrypted file. 7. Keep an Emergency Kit somewhere accessible and secure
The Emergency Kit includes your account sign-in address, email, Secret Key, password field, and Setup Code. 1Password suggests printing it and storing it safely; its security guidance also names a USB flash drive as a way to keep it off your computer. A USB drive holding the kit preserves sign-in information, not vault contents. Protect the kit as sensitive account information, and keep it somewhere you can reach if your primary device is unavailable. Get to know your Emergency Kit Keep your 1Password account secure

8. Generate a recovery code before you need one
A recovery code provides another route back into an account. 1Password’s process uses verification at the account email to set new account details and obtain a new Emergency Kit. Deleting the recovery code removes that recovery route, so keep it secure and make sure you understand where it is stored before relying on it. It restores access, not vault data from a separate copy. Generate and use recovery codes
9. Know whether an organizer or administrator can help
For eligible family or team accounts, an organizer or team administrator can initiate recovery for a member. The member then creates new account details and saves a new Emergency Kit. This is an account-access process, not a way for the organizer or administrator to hand over an independent vault backup. Recover accounts for family or team members

10. Preserve access promptly if you are locked out, and check for legacy vaults
If sign-in fails but the app remains unlocked or locally accessible, 1Password’s password troubleshooting guidance advises exporting in some situations while access remains. Treat that export as plaintext and secure it accordingly. If you forgot your account password or can’t unlock the app
Older 1Password 7 and earlier standalone vaults were local rather than account vaults. The migration guidance describes moving that data into a 1Password account; 1Password 8 requires a membership. Do not assume legacy export formats or standalone-vault instructions apply to 1Password 8. The migration page lists signup locations at 1Password.com, 1Password.ca, and 1Password.eu; those locations do not establish different export or storage behavior by region. Export instructions depend on the platform and account configuration. According to 1Password’s current export guidance, mobile exports use the Credential Exchange standard, while desktop app exports do not currently export passkeys. SSO account configuration may also prevent export. Check the current instructions for your app before relying on an export as a complete migration or archive. Export your data from the 1Password apps
