There is no single set of ten VS Code extensions that suits every developer. The right choices depend on your language, project conventions, and whether you work locally or in a remote environment. Because no verified author list or personal-use notes are available here, this guide presents ten practical extension categories and candidates—not a claim about one person’s indispensable setup.

How to choose extensions that earn a place in your setup

Start with a task you actually need to do: language support, formatting, linting, Git history, diagnostics, AI assistance, or remote development. Before installing anything, check its README, contributed features, changelog, dependencies, publisher, and extension ID on the Marketplace. An extension’s name alone is not a reliable way to identify it.

  • Fit: Does it support your language, framework, repository, and team conventions?
  • Overlap: Does VS Code or another installed extension already do the job?
  • Cost of setup: Will configuration improve your workflow, or add noise and maintenance?
  • Execution location: Does it need to work with files and tools on your local machine or on a remote host?
  • Trust and maintenance: Is the publisher the one you expect, and does the listing show credible maintenance activity?

The VS Code Marketplace identifies extensions by publisher and extension ID, and its details page can show the README, feature contributions, changelog, and dependencies. Microsoft’s Extension Marketplace documentation also notes that extensions have the same permissions as VS Code. Since VS Code 1.97, the first installation from a third-party publisher prompts a publisher-trust confirmation; Marketplace packages are signed and VS Code verifies their signatures during installation. A trust prompt is not a guarantee that an extension is appropriate for your project, so check the publisher and fit yourself.

Ten extension candidates, organized by the job they do

These are candidates to evaluate, not a universal ranking. In particular, several Marketplace listings below should be checked directly for their current workflows and feature boundaries before you rely on specific capabilities.

1. GitHub Copilot: inline assistance and chat

Consider GitHub Copilot if you want coding suggestions as you type, conversational assistance, or AI-assisted edits. The GitHub Copilot Marketplace listing describes inline suggestions and also lists multi-file edits and agent mode. Its description says it “Provides inline coding suggestions as you type”; that is the publisher’s description, not an independent performance finding. Generated code can be wrong or unsuitable, so review it as you would other code. The listing describes a Copilot Free signup path as well as subscription access; check the listing for current regional availability and terms. It says current Copilot Chat releases require the latest VS Code release.

2. Microsoft Python: a Python workflow foundation

For Python projects, Microsoft’s Python extension documentation describes broad language-workflow support. It installs Pylance, Python Debugger, and Python Environments as optional companion extensions by default. Python Environments is actively developed, with rollout controlled through settings or staged assignment, according to the repository. Treat formatting, linting, and Jupyter support as separate project decisions rather than assuming one extension covers every Python need.

7–10. Add only tools your project actually needs

The evidence available for this guide does not establish four more named extensions with enough verified detail to recommend them responsibly. Rather than pad the list with guesses, choose any additional extensions by concrete need: for example, notebook support, a project-specific language tool, or tooling required by your remote workflow. Check the publisher’s Marketplace entry and the repository’s own setup guidance before installing. A list of ten is not a reason to add extensions that duplicate built-in features or solve problems you do not have.

Remote development changes where extensions run

In VS Code’s remote-development model, workspace extensions run where the project is located, while UI extensions run locally. That distinction matters for extensions that depend on shell scripts, Node APIs, or access to local versus remote files. Microsoft’s remote extension support documentation explains the local and remote execution model. If you use SSH, development containers, WSL, or Codespaces, verify that an extension supports the environment where its work must happen.

Settings Sync does not synchronize extensions to or from SSH, development-container, or WSL remote windows, according to Microsoft’s Marketplace documentation. Do not assume that an extension installed in your local window will be available in a remote workspace.

Install, test, and manage extensions deliberately

  1. Identify the intended extension. In the Marketplace, confirm the publisher and extension ID, then inspect its README, features, changelog when available, and dependencies.
  2. Install from the Marketplace or a VSIX. Review the publisher-trust confirmation when it appears; signature verification does not replace checking whether the extension suits your work.
  3. Check behavior in the right workspace. For remote development, make sure the extension is installed or running in the appropriate local or remote context.
  4. Keep or remove it based on usefulness. VS Code lets you disable or uninstall extensions, install another version, and manage automatic updates.
  5. For a team, document recommendations. Workspace recommendations can communicate a proposed toolset without implying that every extension is required for every developer.

Build a smaller list around your actual workflow

A useful extension setup is a set of tools that solve distinct, recurring problems—not a target number. Begin with the language and repository needs, add formatting or linting only when they match project standards, and evaluate Git, diagnostics, AI, and remote-development tools on their own merits. Revisit the list when tools overlap, become noisy, or no longer fit the project.
