1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGoogle Photos can show pictures that are not backed up, hide photos without protecting them, and share images without transferring ownership. These 10 details explain what its key settings actually do—and what to check before you rely on them.
1. Seeing a photo in Google Photos does not prove it is backed up
The app can display photos and videos stored on your device even when they have not been uploaded to your Google Account. Check that the app is using the account you expect, then confirm the backup status before treating the cloud as a copy of your library. On Android, Google Photos displays backup indicators and can show “Backup complete.” See Google’s backup guidance.
2. “Free up space” removes device copies
Google Photos’ Free up space feature deletes eligible copies from your phone after they have been backed up. The backed-up images can remain visible in Google Photos online, but removed files are no longer available offline or in the phone’s built-in gallery. Google says photos and videos less than 30 days old may be kept on the device. Confirm backup first, and make sure you are comfortable losing local access to the removed copies. Details are in Google’s Free up space guide.
3. Locked Folder and Archive are not interchangeable
Archive takes items out of common library surfaces, but archived photos remain searchable. Locked Folder is designed to keep items out of search and other familiar Photos views, with access protected by your device’s screen lock or, depending on platform, your Google Account password. Items in Locked Folder cannot be shared or edited while they remain there.

| Feature | Visibility and access | Sharing and editing |
|---|---|---|
| Archive | Archived items remain searchable. | Does not provide Locked Folder’s access protection. |
| Locked Folder | Items are hidden from search and common library surfaces; access is protected by a screen lock or, depending on platform, a Google Account password. | Items cannot be shared or edited while inside. |
Google describes these differences in its Locked Folder help.
4. Locked Folder has its own backup decision
If Locked Folder backup is off, its contents may exist only on that device. Google warns that those items can be lost if you uninstall Photos, clear the app’s data, factory-reset the device, or lose or damage it. If you need a cloud copy, check the Locked Folder backup setting rather than assuming your regular Photos backup covers everything.

Moving an image into Locked Folder moves only that original. An edited version, another copy, or a copy someone else saved from a shared album may still exist elsewhere. Backed-up Locked Folder items count toward your Google Account storage. See the Locked Folder guidance.
5. Partner Sharing shares photos; it does not transfer ownership
Partner Sharing can automatically share selected photos as they are backed up. Selection can be limited by date or, in eligible regions, by face group. It is a sharing arrangement, not a synchronized transfer: changes one person makes to their shared version do not change a copy the other person has already saved.

If the recipient saves shared photos, Google says those saved items do not count against the recipient’s storage while the partner continues sharing them. A saved copy can remain in the recipient’s library even if the source partner later deletes the original. Google’s Partner Sharing help explains the conditions.
6. Ask Photos is an optional conversational search mode
Classic search can find people, places, and things in your library. If you opt into Gemini features in Photos, Ask Photos can handle more complex questions and follow-up clarifications. Google’s example is “What did I eat on my trip to Barcelona?”

Google calls Ask Photos experimental and warns: “This feature is still experimental, so it may give unexpected or inaccurate results.” Availability may vary by region, domain, and account type. Treat results as a search aid, not proof that a photo contains a particular detail. See Google’s search help.
7. Face labels make search more useful, but they need setup
You can label people and pets, then search for those labels. Searching by a person’s name or nickname depends on labels and Face Groups being enabled, so a missing result does not necessarily mean the photo is absent. Face grouping is not infallible: Google separately cautions that Partner Sharing’s face-group filter can occasionally include photos that do not contain the selected person. Check results before sharing or relying on them.

8. Backup quality trades fidelity against storage
The available quality setting changes how photos and videos are stored. Google’s help page describes the options as follows; not every file can be compressed, and the settings may change over time.
| Setting | What happens to image or video quality | Storage and availability |
|---|---|---|
| Original quality | Stores content at the resolution captured. | Counts toward Google Account storage. |
| Storage saver | Can resize photos over 16 MP to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p. | Uses the Storage saver setting; the help page does not state that it is region-limited. |
| Express | Can resize photos larger than 3 MP to 3 MP and videos above 480p to 480p. | Available only in some regions. |
Choose based on whether preserving captured resolution matters more than saving space. Google lists the current descriptions in its backup quality help.
9. Google Photos storage is shared with Drive and Gmail
Google says each account comes with up to 15 GB shared across Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail. If you need more, Google identifies Google One as the option to buy additional storage. The storage management tool can estimate how long your space may last and surface items such as blurry photos, screenshots, and large videos for review. The quota and tools are described in Google’s activity and storage help.
10. Long inactivity can put Photos content at risk
Google’s current policy says it may delete Photos content if you do not use Google Photos for two years or more. Google says it will email at least three months before possible deletion and give you a chance to reactivate. Items sent to Trash remain there for 30 days before permanent deletion. The policy describes an exception for Google One members in good standing. Because these rules can change, check Google’s current activity and storage policy for the terms that apply to your account.
