NASA’s Voyager 2 images of the distant world show a cratered surface cut by enormous valleys—features that suggest the moon’s crust was stretched in the past.
10 interesting facts about Titania
1. Titania is Uranus’s largest moon
NASA describes Titania as “Uranus’ largest moon.” It is the largest of the planet’s five major moons in NASA’s diameter comparison, but it is not the largest moon in the Solar System. NASA’s Uranus moon facts
2. William Herschel discovered it in 1787
Astronomer William Herschel discovered Titania on January 11, 1787. The discovery came more than a century before spacecraft could visit Uranus.
3. Its name comes from Shakespeare
Titania is named for the queen of the fairies in William Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. NASA’s Titania overview

4. It is about 1,578 kilometers across
NASA’s overview rounds Titania’s diameter to about 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles). For direct comparisons, NASA’s Uranus-moon table lists a more specific diameter: 1,577.8 kilometers (980.4 miles), with the measurement credited to JPL Solar System Dynamics. The different figures reflect rounding, not two different estimates.
5. Oberon is the closest in size among Uranus’s other major moons
NASA’s comparison lists Titania as larger than each of Uranus’s other four major moons. The diameters below are the table’s figures, credited to JPL Solar System Dynamics. NASA’s Uranus moon facts
| Moon | Diameter |
|---|---|
| Titania | 1,577.8 km (980.4 miles) |
| Oberon | 1,522.8 km (946.2 miles) |
| Umbriel | 1,169.4 km (726.6 miles) |
| Ariel | 1,157.8 km (719.4 miles) |
| Miranda | 471.6 km (293.0 miles) |
6. Voyager 2 photographed Titania in 1986
NASA’s high-resolution color composite of Titania combines images taken by Voyager 2 on January 24, 1986, as the spacecraft approached Uranus. Those images remain the basis for the detailed views of the moon’s surface described in NASA’s overview.
7. Its cratered surface is crossed by immense valleys
The Voyager images show a cratered landscape broken by long fault valleys. Some of the visible valleys are nearly 1,000 miles (1,609 kilometers) long—an extraordinary scale for surface features on a moon about 980 miles across.

8. The valleys suggest Titania’s crust was stretched
NASA notes that the troughs break the crust in two directions. Their pattern is evidence interpreted as tectonic extension: the surface appears to have been pulled apart in parts of Titania’s past. The imagery does not establish that the moon is active today.
9. Bright deposits on some valley walls may be frost
NASA reports highly reflective material on sun-facing valley walls and says it may represent frost. The images suggest a possibility; they do not confirm the deposits’ composition.

10. Its best-known surface details come from a brief spacecraft encounter
Voyager 2’s January 1986 images revealed the valleys and bright deposits that make Titania especially interesting. Those observations provide evidence for interpreting its geology, but they are not proof of current geological activity.

Titania combines a clear distinction—largest among Uranus’s moons—with a surface marked by enormous fractures. Its size is well established in NASA’s comparison, while the valleys and bright patches invite more cautious interpretation: the troughs suggest past crustal stretching, and the reflective material may be frost.
