Most Alexa problems fall into a few recognizable groups: the Echo cannot reach Wi‑Fi, setup cannot finish, Alexa cannot see a smart-home device, or the device itself has stopped responding. Start with the least destructive fix—power cycling and checking the network—before removing saved Wi‑Fi details or factory-resetting the Echo.
The menu names below apply to current Alexa app and Echo software versions, although they can vary slightly by model. Screen-equipped devices, for example, have Wi‑Fi controls on the Echo itself; screenless models use the Alexa app.
1. Echo is offline or keeps disconnecting from Wi‑Fi
First, restart the Echo. Unplug the device or its power adapter, wait briefly, and reconnect it. If you have a battery-powered Alexa device, remove and reinsert its batteries. This is a real power cycle, not simply muting the microphone.
- Check whether other phones, computers, or smart-home devices are also offline.
- If several devices have lost access, restart the router and check for an ISP outage. The Echo is unlikely to be the only cause.
- Move the Echo within about 30 feet (10 meters) of the router while testing it.
- Keep it away from interference sources such as microwaves and baby monitors.
If your router provides separate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, try the other band. Echo devices can use both bands with supported 802.11a/b/g/n Wi‑Fi; they are not restricted to 2.4 GHz. Echo devices cannot connect to ad-hoc or peer-to-peer networks.

Amazon’s guidance covers restarting and Wi‑Fi troubleshooting in its restart instructions and Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guide.
2. Echo will not connect during initial setup
Setup failures can be caused by an outdated Alexa app or a temporary Wi‑Fi problem. Amazon recommends updating the app, restarting the Echo, and retrying setup; if it still fails, test with your phone’s Wi‑Fi hotspot.
- Update the Alexa app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Restart the Echo.
- Open the Alexa app and run setup again.
- If setup still fails, temporarily enable your phone’s Wi‑Fi hotspot and try connecting the Echo to it.
The hotspot test helps distinguish an Echo problem from a router or ISP problem. If the Echo connects to the hotspot but not your home network, inspect the router’s Wi‑Fi settings. If other devices also cannot connect, Amazon recommends contacting your ISP.
For an Echo with eero Built-in, install and configure the eero network before attempting to connect the Echo to it. See Amazon’s setup troubleshooting steps.

An Echo does not automatically know that you renamed the network or changed its password. For a screenless Echo, update the saved connection in the Alexa app:
- Open Alexa.
- Select Devices.
- Choose the affected Echo.
- Select Device Settings.
- Tap Change or remove a Wi‑Fi network.
- Select a previously connected network, or choose Join another Wi‑Fi Network.
- Follow the prompts to enter the new network details.
Use the device’s own network controls for an Echo with a screen rather than relying on this app path. Amazon documents the screenless-device procedure in its Wi‑Fi connection instructions.

4. Echo Show or Echo Spot cannot find the Wi‑Fi network
On an Echo Show or Echo Spot, change the connection on the display:
- With the Alexa+ interface, select Menu → Settings. With the original interface, swipe down from the top and select Settings.
- Select Device Options → Network.
- Make sure Wi‑Fi is enabled.
- Select your network and enter its password.
If the network is missing, select the refresh icon. You can also scroll down to Preferences for advanced Wi‑Fi options.

Menu layouts can differ on the Echo Hub and Echo Show 5—all generations; Amazon says those devices are scheduled to receive a software update. Its screen-device Wi‑Fi guide lists the current variations.
5. Alexa is frozen or does not respond
If the light ring or screen is stuck, voice commands do nothing, or the Alexa app cannot reach the device, perform a physical restart:
- Unplug the Echo or its power adapter.
- Wait briefly.
- Reconnect the power.
- Wait for the device to finish starting before testing it.
For a device with removable batteries, remove and reinsert them instead. Do not jump straight to a factory reset: a restart preserves the device’s registration, routines, and network configuration. If restarting does not resolve repeated connectivity or responsiveness problems, resetting is the next escalation.

6. The Echo needs a factory reset
A factory reset removes the Echo’s personal configuration and returns it to setup mode. It can be appropriate when the device will not recover, when you are giving it to someone else, or when normal setup data has become unusable.
Reset instructions are model- and generation-specific. There is no single button combination that works for every Echo. Amazon separates procedures for different Echo and Echo Dot generations, Echo Show models, Echo Spot (2024 release), Echo Hub, Echo Pop, Echo Flex, and Echo Studio releases, including separate instructions for the Echo Studio 2019 and 2025 releases.
Identify the exact model before resetting, then use Amazon’s official reset instructions. After the reset, the Echo must be registered and connected to Wi‑Fi again.
7. Alexa cannot find a smart-home device
When a newly installed bulb, plug, camera, or other accessory is absent from Alexa, start discovery manually. Say:
“Alexa, discover my smart home devices.”
Or use the app:
- Open Alexa.
- Select Devices.
- Select Discover Devices.
- Wait approximately 20–30 seconds for discovery to finish.
If nothing appears, check the device maker’s app first. The accessory may not be fully installed, may have been deleted or disabled, or may be associated with a different account. Also check that the integration is enabled, account linking completed successfully, and the device name is recognized.
Amazon now refers to smart-home skills as smart home add-ons. Existing integrations continue to operate; the terminology change alone does not require action. Amazon’s smart-home troubleshooting documentation covers discovery and account-linking failures.

8. A linked smart-home account has expired
Alexa may still list a service even though its account link has expired or its authorization token is no longer valid. Re-link it through the current Alexa path:
- Open the Alexa app.
- Select More.
- Open Alexa+ Store.
- Select Browse Alexa Skills & Games.
- Find the device maker’s integration and link the account again.
Before relinking, sign in to the manufacturer’s app or website with the same credentials. This helps distinguish an Alexa authorization problem from invalid credentials or an outage on the manufacturer’s OAuth server. If the maker’s app itself cannot control the device, fix that account or device connection first.
9. Alexa says a device is not responding, but it changes state
This is a different problem from a device that is genuinely offline. A light may turn on, for example, while Alexa says it cannot complete the request. In an integrated smart-home system, the device cloud may finish the action after Alexa has already timed out waiting for confirmation.
Amazon’s developer troubleshooting documentation identifies an Alexa wait limit of 8 seconds for this response path. That limit mainly matters to the integration provider: its cloud service and Lambda function must return a valid response quickly enough. Incorrectly formatted or incorrectly cased response JSON can cause the same apparent failure, including a wrong namespace, name, payload structure, or property name.
As a user, check whether the device actually changed state, then open the manufacturer’s app to test it directly. If the device works there but Alexa regularly reports a false failure, report the issue to the device maker or integration provider rather than repeatedly resetting the Echo. See Amazon’s smart-home integration troubleshooting guide.

Matter pairing involves more than ordinary Alexa device discovery. During commissioning, Alexa uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to pass Wi‑Fi or Thread credentials to the Matter device. The device then connects locally over Matter over Wi‑Fi or Matter over Thread.

Check these requirements:
- Use a compatible Echo or eero device. Amazon’s supported list includes Echo 2nd Gen and newer, Echo Dot 2nd Gen and newer, Echo Pop, Echo Hub, Echo Show 5/8/10/15/21, Echo Spot (2024 release), and Echo Studio 1st Gen and newer, among others.
- For a Thread-based Matter product, make sure the home has a compatible Thread Border Router. Not every Echo that supports Matter provides the Thread function.
- Keep the phone, Echo, and Matter accessory close together during commissioning so the BLE handoff is reliable.
- Finish setup in the manufacturer’s app when the product requires it, then start Matter pairing from the app’s provided QR code or numeric setup code.
Matter does not inherently require a separate cloud skill for Alexa control. When the local Matter path is available, local control can continue during an Internet outage. That does not help if the Echo, Wi‑Fi network, Thread Border Router, or accessory itself is unavailable. Amazon’s Matter compatibility documentation lists supported devices and current platform details.

FAQ
Why does Alexa keep saying it cannot connect to the Internet?
Restart the Echo and check whether other devices are also offline. If several devices have lost connectivity, restart the router and investigate an ISP or home-network problem. Also test the Echo closer to the router and try the other 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network if both are available.
How do I reconnect Alexa after changing my Wi‑Fi password?
In the Alexa app, open Devices, select the Echo, choose Device Settings, and select Change or remove a Wi‑Fi network. Choose a saved network or Join another Wi‑Fi Network, then follow the prompts. Echo Show and other screen-equipped models use their on-device Network settings.
What is the correct way to reset an Amazon Echo?
Use Amazon’s reset instructions for the exact model and generation. Echo reset controls are not universal, so using a button combination from another model may do nothing or perform a different action.

Confirm that the accessory works in its manufacturer app, that its Alexa smart home add-on is enabled and linked to the correct account, and then run Devices → Discover Devices. Discovery usually takes about 20–30 seconds. Check that the device has not been deleted or disabled and that Alexa recognizes its name.
Can Alexa control Matter devices without the Internet?
Matter can use a local connection between a compatible Echo or eero and the accessory, so control may continue during an Internet outage. The local Wi‑Fi or Thread path must still be operating, and Thread products require a compatible Thread Border Router.
The Bottom Line
Power-cycle the Echo before changing settings, test the network with another device, and keep the Echo near the router while diagnosing Wi‑Fi. For smart-home failures, separate discovery, account linking, and response-time problems instead of treating every error as an Echo fault. Only factory-reset after identifying the exact model and exhausting the less destructive fixes.
