Beets, carrots, celery, cucumbers, nasturtiums, spinach, leaf lettuce, sage, onion-family plants, and sunflowers are all listed by WVU Extension as companions for brassicas or cabbage-family crops. Cauliflower belongs to that group, so these are practical options to consider—not a proven ranking or a guarantee of better growth or pest control.

What “best” means for cauliflower companions

There is no established head-to-head ranking showing which plants perform best beside cauliflower. WVU Extension lists the options below for Brassicaceae or cabbage-family crops, a broad group that includes cauliflower. Those family-level lists do not show that every pairing has been tested specifically with cauliflower.

Use the list to consider bed diversity and efficient use of space, not as a pest-control prescription. University of Minnesota Extension cautions that many companion-planting claims are not accurate or research-backed. For example, evidence that marigolds or green onions repel flea beetles around brassicas is limited and sometimes contradictory. WVU Extension also notes that results vary by area: “Companion planting is not an exact science, and successful companion plantings can vary in different areas.”

10 plants to consider growing with cauliflower

These are extension-listed possibilities, not ten proven cauliflower-specific pairings. Choose among them based on your space, growing season, and the needs of the crops you want to raise.

  5. Nasturtiums

Nasturtiums appear in both WVU lists. Their presence on a companion list does not establish that they will reliably draw pests away from cauliflower, so do not rely on them as a trap crop without stronger local evidence.

  6. Spinach

Spinach is included in both WVU Extension lists. It may be considered where planting dates and available space allow it to grow without competing with cauliflower.

    • Plant Spacing: 24" Apart. Sun Requirement: Full Sun/Partial Shade.
  7. Leaf lettuce

Leaf lettuce appears on WVU’s Brassicaceae list. It is one possible way to use available garden space, provided it does not crowd the cauliflower.

  8. Sage

Sage is included in WVU Extension’s cabbage-family table. The source supports considering it, but does not establish a specific protective effect for cauliflower.

  9. Onion-family plants

WVU lists onion-family plants as cabbage-family companions. Treat this as a planting option rather than a flea-beetle remedy: UMN Extension says the claim that green onions repel flea beetles around brassicas has little or conflicting evidence.

How to place companions without crowding cauliflower

Companion plants should fit around the cauliflower’s actual mature size, not be squeezed into its spacing allowance. UF/IFAS advises spacing cauliflower plants 12–18 inches apart, with row spacing varying by variety. Preserve light, airflow, and room to tend each crop; place smaller or faster-growing plants only where they will not interfere.

Cauliflower is a cool-season crop, and planting windows depend on location. UF/IFAS’s Florida guidance is regional, not a universal calendar. Check a local growing guide for timing in your area rather than using Florida dates elsewhere.

Give cauliflower the care companions cannot replace

  • Start seeds or use transplants. UF/IFAS describes both approaches; for seeds, it gives a planting depth of ¼–½ inch. Variety choices include self-blanching and colored-head types.
  • Keep moisture consistent. The University of Saskatchewan notes that steady moisture matters and that cauliflower is sensitive to extreme heat.
  • Use row covers when appropriate. The University of Saskatchewan recommends row covers where insect pressure is high.
  • Scout and rotate. Rutgers Cooperative Extension recommends regular monitoring for pests and disease, with particularly frequent flea-beetle checks while plants are seedlings. Rotation intervals depend on the disease problem from the previous crop.

Flowering companion plants can be part of habitat-based pest management in some settings, but that is not the same as demonstrating a cauliflower-specific benefit. UF/IFAS describes flowering plants such as marigold and sweet alyssum in high-tunnel examples involving leafy greens and tomatoes; those examples do not validate a particular pairing with cauliflower.

Plants to avoid—and a note about dill

The cited extension material does not establish a reliable general avoid list for plants near cauliflower. WVU’s companion-planting table is internally inconsistent about dill: it lists dill among cabbage-family companions and also puts it in the “do not plant next to” column. Because the same source gives conflicting guidance, this list cannot support either recommending or condemning dill; check stronger local guidance before deciding.
