Record in Log when you intend to color-grade the footage and want more flexibility with highlights and shadows. If your goal is HDR playback without a full grading workflow, standard HDR may be the better fit. The key distinction: 10-bit describes image-value precision; Log describes how brightness is mapped. They are separate recording attributes, not competing formats.
What do 10-bit and Log mean?
10-bit describes precision
Bit depth is the precision used to encode image values. Apple’s developer material describes 10-bit as common for HDR distribution, but bit depth alone does not tell you whether footage is Log, HDR, or ready to view. The phone, camera app, codec, transfer curve, and color space determine the actual combination.
Log describes a transfer curve
Log uses a logarithmic curve to map scene brightness into recorded values. It preserves more dynamic range than standard video and produces a flat, desaturated image intended for color grading. Apple’s camera API documentation treats HLG/BT.2020 and Apple Log as different color-space cases, underscoring that HDR and Log are not interchangeable labels.
So “10-bit Log” means a recording combines a bit depth with a Log curve; 10-bit does not automatically mean Log, and not every Log option should be assumed to be 10-bit.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Should I record in 10-bit Log or standard video on my phone?
| Situation | Starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Personal clips, quick social posts, or minimal editing | Standard SDR | It is processed in camera, ready to view, and generally simpler to share and edit. |
| Same-day event or news coverage | Standard SDR | You avoid making color grading a required step before delivery. |
| You want a specific creative look and can grade | Log | Its flat capture is meant for post-production adjustment. |
| High-contrast or changing light, with grading time available | Log | It gives more flexibility over highlight and shadow detail, provided exposure is handled well. |
| Your destination is HDR and your viewing/export setup supports it | Standard HDR | It is designed to be viewable without extensive grading while retaining an HDR presentation. |
| You are unsure whether your phone and app support Log | Check the exact model and app first | Support varies; for example, Apple’s Final Cut Camera Log support requires iPhone 15 Pro or later. |
When standard SDR is the practical choice
Standard SDR is usually best for everyday memories, quick posts, run-and-gun reporting, and footage that needs to be delivered soon. The camera applies color, contrast, and other image settings, so the file is ready to view rather than waiting for a grade. Apple describes SDR as a fast workflow, typically with smaller, more manageable files than Log or RAW and broad display and platform compatibility.
The trade-off is reduced dynamic range and less room to repair exposure mistakes later. If you overexpose highlights or bury shadows, standard SDR gives you less latitude to reshape the image in editing than Log.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
When standard HDR makes more sense
“Standard” does not necessarily mean SDR: standard video can be HDR. Apple describes standard HDR as ready to view without extensive grading, with brighter highlights and more detailed shadows than SDR. Choose it when you intend to deliver HDR and can manage an HDR-capable viewing and export chain. HDR footage needs an HDR-capable display for proper presentation, and Apple notes that it offers less post-production flexibility than Log or RAW.
Apple Developer material from 2020 gives technical context, describing SDR as limited to up to 100 candelas per square meter and HDR as capable of up to 10,000 nits. Those are technical range figures, not a promise that every phone, display, or delivered video reaches those levels.

When Log is worth the extra work
Choose Log for documentary, branded, or independent work when you have time and skill to tailor the color and want greater control over highlight and shadow detail. The flat appearance is intentional, not a finished look. You will need to apply a LUT or perform manual color correction before the image looks finished.
Log is not automatically better-looking straight out of camera. It makes sense only if your workflow includes grading. It also cannot restore clipped highlights or badly underexposed shadows simply because the file is Log; exposure and the phone’s implementation still matter.

Check phone, app, and codec support before recording
Compatibility depends on the specific device and camera app, so do not generalize from one manufacturer’s support. In Apple’s Final Cut Camera, Log requires iPhone 15 Pro or later and is available with HEVC or Apple ProRes. These are Final Cut Camera compatibility details, not a claim about every iPhone app or Android phone. Check the exact phone and app settings before planning a Log workflow.
Also verify the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, color space, and storage path. The mode label alone does not establish all of those details.

Plan for storage if you use ProRes
High-quality codecs can create a substantial storage burden. Apple says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files. Apple documents external storage for managing ProRes on supported iPhone models, and says external storage is required for ProRes RAW recording in Final Cut Camera. An external USB-C SSD may therefore be useful for a supported ProRes or RAW workflow, but an SSD is not a general requirement for all 10-bit or Log video. Before buying a drive, verify your phone’s model, connector, sustained write performance, resolution and frame-rate limits, and app compatibility.
