The original Subscene closed in early May 2024, so subscene.com is not merely experiencing a temporary outage. The practical replacement depends on what you need: SubDL is the closest archive-style alternative, OpenSubtitles offers the broadest search tools, Addic7ed is stronger for current TV episodes, and Caption can automate searches from your desktop.
Whichever service you use, do not select a subtitle solely because the movie or episode title matches. Release type, frame rate, cut, and language variant determine whether the file will actually stay synchronized.
Quick comparison
| Alternative | Best for | What stands out | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| SubDL | General movies and TV | Subscene archive mirror plus new uploads | Several files may still exist for the same release |
| OpenSubtitles | Large databases and precise searches | Hash, IMDb ID, release, language, and SDH filters | Free download limits and delays |
| Podnapisi | Multilingual subtitles and older releases | Large database with language and hearing-impaired coverage | Release and FPS matching is essential |
| Addic7ed | English-language TV episodes | Show, season, episode, and translation workflow | Not an ideal movie database |
| SubSource | New community uploads | Active movie and TV listings, including 2026 releases | Old Subscene profiles are not restored automatically |
| TVsubtitles.net | TV-only browsing | Show and episode navigation with release labels | Movie searching is handled elsewhere |
| Moviesubtitles.org | Older movie releases | Useful for DivX, XviD, DVDRip, WEBRip, and Blu-ray files | Downloads are ZIP/WinZip packages |
| Subtitle Cat | Translating an existing subtitle | Search, upload, and translation into many languages | Machine translations need checking |
| Subscene AI | AI subtitle translation | Search by title or IMDb ID and generate translated files | Not the original Subscene and quality varies |
| Caption | Automatic desktop downloads | Drag-and-drop search with automatic renaming | Depends on its configured subtitle providers |
1. SubDL
SubDL is the closest general-purpose replacement for the old Subscene workflow. It offers movie and TV subtitles, commonly as individual .srt files, and does not require an account for ordinary downloads. SubDL also says that it maintains a searchable mirror of Subscene’s historic archive while accepting newer community uploads.
How to use SubDL
- Open SubDL and use “Search Movies and TV shows or IMDB ID”.
- Open the correct movie or series entry.
- Select the required language.
- Compare the subtitle’s release label, resolution, source, and frame rate with your video.
- Download the matching subtitle and extract it if your browser saves it in an archive.
A matching title is not enough. For example, a subtitle timed for a 23.976 FPS Blu-ray encode may drift against a 25 FPS TV recording, even when both files represent the same episode.

2. OpenSubtitles
OpenSubtitles is the broadest choice when you need many languages, subtitle variants, or automated tools. Its search interface supports ALL, TV Series, and movies searches, along with filters for language, hearing-impaired subtitles, machine translation, trusted sources, format, upload date, year, IMDb ID, movie hash, and release information.
The most useful feature is file-specific searching: the service allows you to drag and drop a movie file so the search can use information from that exact file. A movie hash is generally more reliable than searching by title alone.
Free use is not unlimited. Anonymous users are currently listed with 10 downloads per 24 hours and a 20-second delay. Other account tiers have different quotas. Automated applications can also encounter HTTP 429 responses because the API and actual file-download service use separate rate limits.
3. Podnapisi
Podnapisi is a strong multilingual database, particularly for older films, TV shows, SDH subtitles, and less common languages. Its site currently reports more than 2.2 million subtitles covering over 67,000 movies, 9,000 series, and 101 languages.

Use the release information and FPS shown in the results rather than choosing the first translation. Podnapisi may list several files with nearly identical titles but different timing. Choose SDH or hearing-impaired subtitles only when you want speaker labels and sound descriptions such as [door closes] or [music playing].
4. Addic7ed
Addic7ed is most useful for television, especially current English-language episodes. Its navigation includes Quick search, Select a TV Show, season and episode pages, Browse by shows, Latest episodes, and a TV Shows Schedule.
- Use Quick search or choose Browse by shows.
- Select the series.
- Open the season and episode.
- Choose the language and release that match your video.
The site lists languages including English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Arabic, Persian, Greek, Hungarian, Romanian, and others. Registered users receive additional features such as watched-episode tracking, full-season packs, online editing, and collaborative translation; the site currently lists a 35-download-per-24-hour allowance for registered users.

- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.

Addic7ed is a poor first choice for movies, and a brand-new episode may not have a subtitle available yet.

5. SubSource
SubSource is a newer community service worth checking for recent uploads. It launched on 2 May 2024, when Subscene shut down, starting from Subscene’s Persian and English subtitle databases, and now lists more than 2.9 million subtitles in 118 languages. Downloads don’t need an account; commenting and rating do. Its homepage shows current movie and TV entries, multilingual subtitles, and release-specific listings. The service says it receives updates every minute.
SubSource also provides account features for uploading subtitles, creating an API key through My Profile, and potentially claiming an old Subscene profile. That claim process is not automatic: users must create an account and submit a support request. Do not assume that an old Subscene username has already been transferred. Developers can use its public REST API, documented at subsource.net/api-docs, and its rules keep machine-translated subtitles apart from human ones: they are allowed only a week after release when no human subtitle exists, must be labelled as machine translated, and are capped at five uploads per user a month.
Read the site’s terms before uploading or sharing files. The terms require users to have the necessary rights to copy, upload, download, or share the material.
6. TVsubtitles.net
TVsubtitles.net is designed for browsing television shows by season and episode. Its menu includes Home, TV Shows, New, Top, Add, and Feedback. You can also use its Show subtitles selector.
The service’s recent listings include release labels such as WEB.ATVP, WEB.AMZN, WEB.FLUX, and WEB.MAX.WEB-DL. These labels can make it easier to identify the right timing for a streaming release.
This is not a general movie subtitle database. Its movie link sends users to the separate Moviesubtitles.org service.

7. Moviesubtitles.org
Moviesubtitles.org is particularly useful for older movie files. Its database is oriented toward releases such as DivX, XviD, DVDRip, WEBRip, and Blu-ray. The site reports roughly 106,000 subtitles for more than 23,000 movies and lists languages including English, Greek, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Turkish, Spanish, Arabic, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Italian, German, and Ukrainian.
Open the movie page, select a subtitle entry, and click Download. The site’s subtitles are packed with WinZip, so extract the downloaded archive before opening the subtitle in your media player. This older ZIP-based workflow is less convenient for modern streaming releases, and the release label should be checked carefully.
8. Subtitle Cat
Subtitle Cat is best understood as a translation tool, not a direct replacement archive. It can search for an existing subtitle, translate it into another language, or accept an .srt file that you upload yourself. The service says it supports 100 languages, with 50 additional languages recently added.
Subtitle Cat workflow
- Search using the video filename.
- Open a subtitle that matches the video.
- Choose the target language.
- Download the translated
.srtfile.
If Subtitle Cat cannot find the original subtitle, download an .srt from another source, upload it through the site’s upload page, select a language, and download the translation.
Machine translation can mishandle names, jokes, dialect, lyrics, overlapping speech, and forced subtitles. The site currently says that payments cannot be processed, while free translations remain available.
9. Subscene AI
Subscene AI is intended for AI-powered subtitle translation and generation when a suitable community translation is unavailable. Its interface includes Search movie title or IMDb ID, after which the service can provide translated subtitle files.
Recommended Free Tools
This service is not the original Subscene, despite the similar name. Treat its output as a first draft rather than a professionally reviewed translation. Check proper nouns, jokes, cultural references, lyrics, speaker changes, and subtitle timing before relying on it.

10. Caption
Caption is a desktop subtitle finder rather than a site you browse manually. It is available for Linux, macOS as a .dmg, and Windows as an .exe. The advertised workflow is to drag a local video into the application; Caption searches its providers, downloads a subtitle, and renames it beside the video.
Keep both files in the same folder with the same base filename. For example:
Episode.S01E03.1080p.WEB-DL.mkv
Episode.S01E03.1080p.WEB-DL.srt
Most media players will then load the subtitle automatically. Caption cannot invent a matching subtitle when its providers do not contain the title, language, or release you need.

- Match the release. Compare tags such as
WEB-DL,WEBRip,BluRay,HDTV, andDVDRip. Different sources can use different cuts and timings. - Match the frame rate. A 23.976 FPS subtitle can gradually drift against a 25 FPS video. A subtitle that starts correctly may be several seconds out of sync later.
- Check the edition and runtime. Extended, theatrical, director’s-cut, censored, and international versions may contain different scenes or edits.
- Understand “forced.” Forced subtitles normally cover foreign dialogue or essential on-screen text, not every spoken line.
- Choose SDH deliberately. SDH/HI subtitles add speaker names and sound descriptions. Standard subtitles are usually cleaner for viewers who only need dialogue translation.
- Use a hash when available. Hash-based searches, particularly in OpenSubtitles, identify the actual media file rather than relying only on a title and year.
Fixing common subtitle problems
The subtitle is early or late from the beginning
Use your media player’s subtitle delay control. In VLC, open Tools > Track Synchronization and adjust Subtitle track synchronization. A constant offset usually indicates that the subtitle and video have different intros, logos, or cuts.
The subtitle starts correctly but drifts
This is usually a frame-rate or edit-length mismatch, not a simple delay. Download a subtitle for the exact FPS and release. If none exists, a subtitle editor can resynchronize the start and end points, but changing a constant delay will not correct progressive drift.
The download is a ZIP file
Extract it with your operating system’s archive tool or a current archive utility. Look for an .srt, .ass, or .vtt file, then place it beside the video and give both files the same base name.
The file does not load
Check that the extension is visible and not accidentally saved as .srt.txt. Confirm that the subtitle encoding is supported, then load it manually through the player’s subtitle menu. Also check that the downloaded archive did not contain several subtitle versions and that you selected the right one.

Download and safety considerations
Subtitle files are usually text-based, but download pages can contain aggressive advertising, deceptive buttons, or unwanted installers. Use the genuine site address, avoid “download manager” executables, and scan unexpected files before opening them. An HTTPS padlock protects the connection; it does not guarantee that an uploaded subtitle is accurate, copyright-compliant, or safe.
Use subtitles with video content you are legally entitled to access, and follow the copyright rules that apply in your country. Do not install a program merely because a subtitle page claims it is required to extract an .srt file.
FAQ
Is Subscene permanently closed?
Yes. The original Subscene operator announced the closure in April 2024, and the site went offline in early May 2024. Claims that the original subscene.com database is still operating are outdated.
What is the closest replacement for Subscene?
SubDL is the closest match for the old workflow because it provides movie and TV subtitle searches, says it mirrors historic Subscene material, and also accepts newer community uploads.
Why does a subtitle drift even when the movie title matches?
The subtitle may have been timed for a different release, cut, frame rate, or runtime. Match labels such as WEB-DL or Blu-ray and check the FPS before trying to change the subtitle delay.
Are free OpenSubtitles downloads unlimited?
No. OpenSubtitles currently lists quotas and delays for free users, including 10 downloads per 24 hours and a 20-second delay for anonymous users. Automated clients can also receive HTTP 429 rate-limit responses.
The Bottom Line
Start with SubDL for the most Subscene-like experience. Try OpenSubtitles when you need hash searching or broad language coverage, Addic7ed and TVsubtitles.net for TV, and Subtitle Cat or Subscene AI when translation is the main requirement. Always match the subtitle to the exact release and frame rate, then keep the subtitle and video filenames aligned.
