Low-end PCs can run Minecraft shaders, but performance depends on your hardware, Minecraft version, and shader settings. For a lightweight starting point, try Sildur’s Basic Shaders on Very Fast or Sildur’s Enhanced Default on Fast; check each pack’s compatibility before downloading.
These recommendations are for Minecraft: Java Edition. A low-performance preset can help, but it does not guarantee smooth gameplay: expensive effects such as volumetric lighting, high-resolution shadows, depth of field, and motion blur can still reduce performance.

1. Sildur’s Enhanced Default
Best overall choice for a low-end PC that should still look like vanilla Minecraft.
Sildur’s Enhanced Default adds shadows, reflections, temporal anti-aliasing, and godrays while retaining Minecraft’s basic visual identity. Start with the Fast profile: the publisher says it is considerably faster than Fancy.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by Radeon RX 9070 XT
- WINDFORCE Cooling System
- Hawk Fan
- Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel
- RGB Lighting
The pack supports Iris and OptiFine, and its project page lists Minecraft versions through the latest release. Choose the file matching your exact Minecraft version. It also supports Distant Horizons and Voxy when used with a compatible shader configuration.
2. Sildur’s Basic Shaders
Best option when frame rate matters more than advanced lighting.
Sildur’s Basic Shaders is described as lightweight and fast, with optional effects including TAA, sharpening, SSAO, cel shading, emissive lightmaps, depth of field, motion blur, and parallax mapping.
Choose Very Fast or Fast on weak hardware. Avoid Fast+MB and Fast+DoF until you know the base profile runs comfortably; those presets add motion blur or depth of field. The pack supports Iris and OptiFine, and its project page lists Minecraft versions through the latest release.
3. Miniature Shader
Best for a deliberately simple, blocky appearance.
Miniature Shader is described as extremely lightweight. It adds blocky shadows, reflections in water and ice, and a modest emissive-lighting overhaul while keeping Minecraft’s model-like appearance.
Its blocky shadows are intentional; this is not a realistic-lighting pack. It supports Iris and OptiFine, and its listed Minecraft versions extend through 26.2. Choose it if you want visible lighting changes without aiming for cinematic effects.
4. Chocapic13’ High Performance Shaders
Best for older Minecraft versions and high-frame-rate configurations.
Chocapic13’ High Performance Shaders uses a simplified forward-shading pipeline and includes shadows, a dynamic time of day, a custom sky gradient, sun and moon glow, and customized Nether and End visuals.

The publisher reports approximately 50–60 FPS on Intel HD 620 at the Toaster preset with render distance 8. This is a specific test example, not a performance guarantee for other systems. The latest listed file is Chocapic13_HighPerformance_Toaster.zip for Minecraft 1.20.1, dated September 18, 2020. The project page does not list current 1.21.x releases, and its installation instructions focus on OptiFine.
5. Super Duper Vanilla Shaders
Best for a bright, stylized look inspired by Minecraft’s cancelled Super Duper Graphics Pack.
Super Duper Vanilla Shaders aims to reproduce the visual direction associated with the cancelled Super Duper Graphics Pack and other Minecraft-related titles. It is a better fit for players who want a colorful style than for those seeking the absolute lowest GPU load.
The project’s listed release 1.3.8 is for Minecraft 1.21.8. It supports Iris 1.6.10 and newer on Minecraft 1.18.2 and newer, with Windows and Linux support for Intel, AMD, and Nvidia GPUs, as well as Apple M1. OptiFine support is partial and is not prioritized or maintained starting with version 1.3.7, so Iris is the maintained path.
6. Complementary Reimagined
Best when you want a feature-rich pack that can scale down.
Complementary Reimagined is the Complementary visual style intended to preserve Minecraft’s identity; Unbound uses more realistic defaults. The available profiles range from Potato through Ultra.
Start with Potato, or test Low if Potato runs well. The existence of a Potato profile does not make every setting suitable for an old laptop: volumetric effects, high shadow settings, and profiles above Low can erase the performance benefit. The project’s installation instructions use Iris. Keep the downloaded shader file zipped; its installer can perform the installation steps automatically.
7. BSL Shaders
Best for users who want extensive settings and are willing to tune them.

10. Sildur’s Vibrant Shaders
Best for low-end hardware that can handle more lighting than Basic or Enhanced Default.
Sildur’s Vibrant Shaders adds volumetric lighting, bloom, ambient occlusion, and reflections. The project describes it as optimized for many systems, including Mac and Intel GPUs. The author says Medium or High should work on a GTX 960; this is hardware guidance, not a guaranteed frame rate.
Vibrant is not Sildur’s lightest option. Integrated graphics users should try Basic or Enhanced Default first. If those run comfortably, test Vibrant on its lowest profile and reduce shadow quality, reflections, and volumetric effects before increasing render distance. The pack supports Iris and OptiFine and lists Minecraft versions through the latest release.

How to install shaders with Iris
Iris includes Sodium for optimized rendering. Its installation flow is to install Iris and Sodium for your Minecraft version.
- Confirm that you are using Minecraft: Java Edition. Iris does not run on Bedrock Edition, phones, or mobile Java launchers.
- Install Iris and Sodium for a supported Minecraft version. Iris supports Minecraft 1.16.5 and newer, Fabric on 1.16.5 and newer, and NeoForge on 1.21.1 and newer. It does not support Forge.
- Download the shaderpack ZIP from its project page. Do not extract it.
- Launch the Iris profile and open Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs.
- Select Open Shader Pack Folder.
- Copy the original shaderpack ZIP into that folder.
- Return to the shader list, select the pack, and apply a low or Fast profile.
Iris is incompatible with OptiFine, Canvas, and Vulkan mods; Iris says these combinations crash. Nvidium disables itself when shaders are enabled. Distant Horizons and Voxy work only with shaderpacks that explicitly support them. You do not need a Minecraft command to install or activate a shaderpack.
OptiFine installation path
For packs that support OptiFine, open Options → Video Settings → Shaders → Shaders Folder, copy the original ZIP into that folder, and select it in-game. Do not install OptiFine alongside Iris in the same profile; choose one loader path.
How to get better FPS after installing
- Use the pack’s lowest named profile, such as Fast, Very Fast, Toaster, Potato, or Low.
- Set render distance around 8–10 chunks while testing. Chocapic’s published Intel HD 620 example used 8 chunks, according to its project page.
- Disable depth of field, motion blur, volumetric lighting, lens flares, and high-quality reflections first.
- Lower shadow resolution or shadow distance if the shader menu exposes those controls.
- Test in the same world and location after each change; a busy village and a quiet cave have different workloads.
- Use the F3 screen or a frame-rate overlay to compare settings rather than judging from one brief camera movement.
Which shader should you choose?
- Very weak integrated graphics: Try Sildur’s Basic Shaders on Very Fast or Miniature Shader.
