The best focus app depends on what you need to control: a hard block that is difficult to bypass, a delay before opening social media, automatic usage reports, or simply a timer that makes distraction less rewarding. The options below cover built-in iPhone and Android controls, cross-device blockers, desktop-only enforcement tools, and gentler habit-building apps.
For the strongest general-purpose blocking, Freedom is the most versatile choice. If you want to start without installing anything, use Apple Screen Time or Google Digital Wellbeing. For serious desktop work, Cold Turkey Blocker is harder to circumvent than most alternatives.

1. Freedom — best overall cross-device blocker
Freedom is the strongest pick when your distractions move between your phone and computer. It supports Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS, so a blocking session can cover the devices you actually use rather than leaving a convenient escape route open on another screen.
You can block websites, apps, or groups of distractions using blocklists. On a computer, open Freedom, open the dashboard, and under Add Session select Start Now. Enter the duration, choose a list under Block these distractions, select the devices, and choose Start. In the mobile app, open the Sessions tab, tap Now, choose the blocklists, devices, and duration, then tap Start the Session.

- Stronger Magnetic Lock: this magnetic phone wallet upgraded to 3,200 g of holding force with a magnetic case—4X stronger than the official brand—to ensure your wallet stand stays securely locked in place
- Durable Adjustable Stand: tested for 8,000+ hinge uses, this iphone wallet stand is more durable than others and offers versatile viewing options with adjustable angles from 15° to 160°, allowing you to choose portrait or landscape mode to find the perfect angle for watching shows, FaceTiming family, or browsing the web
- Enhanced Security: the phone wallet stand equipped with built-in RFID blocking technology, this ensures your cards are protected from unauthorized scans, keeping your personal information secure during shopping, traveling, or other activities, so you can enjoy peace of mind wherever you go
A one-time Start Now session can run for up to 24 hours. If you want the same block to repeat or last longer, create a recurring session instead. The desktop shortcut is also useful: click the Freedom butterfly icon in the Mac menu bar or Windows taskbar, then select Devices → Blocklists → Start a Session.
Best for: people who need one schedule across work and personal devices.
Limitation: a single Start Now session is not a multi-day block; use recurring sessions for that.
2. Apple Screen Time — best free iPhone option
Screen Time is the first tool to try if you use an iPhone or iPad and do not want another subscription. It includes Downtime, App Limits, and Always Allowed. Downtime restricts apps and notifications during scheduled periods, while phone calls and explicitly allowed apps remain available. App Limits can target an entire category, such as social networking, or an individual app.
How to turn on Screen Time
- Open Settings → Screen Time → App & Website Activity.
- Tap Turn On App & Website Activity.
- To protect the settings, return to Screen Time and choose Lock Screen Time Settings.
- Enter and confirm a four-digit passcode.
That activation step matters. Going straight to Settings → Screen Time → App Limits is an incomplete instruction on current iPhone and iPad setup because App & Website Activity must be enabled first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFamilies can manage Screen Time remotely with Family Sharing. Apple recommends updating all family devices to the latest software before enabling or changing synchronized settings.
Best for: iPhone and iPad owners who want built-in schedules and limits.
Limitation: it is less suitable than Freedom for a mixed-device household or a phone-and-computer workflow.
3. Google Digital Wellbeing — best free Android option
Google Digital Wellbeing provides app timers, usage charts, and website reporting without requiring a separate blocker. When an app timer expires, Android closes the app and dims its icon. Timers reset at midnight, so they are daily limits rather than permanent locks.
Set an Android app timer
- Open Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
- Tap App timers.
- Select an app and tap Set timer.
- Choose a duration and tap OK.
To regain access before midnight, return to the same app-timer screen and delete the timer. If you want to make changing limits more difficult, use Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls → App limits → App limits PIN, turn on PIN for app time limits, and create a unique four-digit PIN. Setting an app’s limit to zero can block another user’s access to it when this PIN is configured.
Chrome usage can be examined through Digital Wellbeing & parental controls → chart → Chrome → Show sites → Show. Some work and school accounts may not support app timers, and menu names can differ by Android manufacturer.
If the Digital Wellbeing icon is hidden, enable it through Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls → More → Manage your data → Show icon in the app list.
Best for: Android users who need straightforward daily limits.
Limitation: timers reset at midnight and can be deleted, so this is not the strongest option for strict enforcement.
4. Cold Turkey Blocker — best for strict desktop blocking
Cold Turkey Blocker is designed for people who can work around ordinary app limits. It supports Windows and macOS only; Android, iOS, ChromeOS, and Linux are not supported. Its website and application blocking are separate systems, which is important when troubleshooting a block that does not behave as expected.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Cold Turkey includes Blocker for websites and applications, Writer for distraction-free writing, and Micromanager, which blocks all applications except those you allow for short productive sprints. Locking a block makes circumvention more difficult: the uninstaller can fail when the user clicks Next, and browser access may remain blocked until the extension is re-enabled.
The free version includes a seven-day Pro trial. The current in-app action is labeled upgrade to pro. If you have already purchased it, install Blocker Free and use the product key inside the app.
Best for: desktop users who need serious enforcement during work blocks.
Limitation: there is no supported native phone version.

5. Opal — best polished session-based blocker
Opal combines scheduled and manual focus sessions with a broad set of controls. Its current features include Sessions, Time Limit, Sleep Mode, Block List, Allow List, Open Limit, Assist, Vacation Mode, Block Screens, App Uninstall Protection, and Screen Time Passcode. It supports iOS, Android, and Mac.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Allow List mode is useful for deep work: it blocks everything except the apps and websites selected for the session. App Uninstall Protection prevents uninstalling Opal or other apps while apps are being blocked in a Session. On supported iOS versions, the Screen Time Passcode option is intended to make sessions harder to bypass.
There are a couple of behaviors that can look like bugs. Safari Private Browsing being unavailable during an active Opal Session is intentional. Also, deleting Opal to escape a session can leave iOS Screen Time settings active; Opal documents a separate hard-reset procedure for that failure mode.
Best for: users who want detailed sessions and strong iPhone controls.
Limitation: its enforcement features can leave settings behind if the app is deleted during a block.
6. one sec — best for breaking impulsive checking
one sec is a good fit when the problem is opening an app automatically rather than needing an impenetrable lockout. It can interrupt apps, social networks, and websites with interventions such as Take a deep breath, Mirror, Conversational Reflection, Rotate Phone, Type random text, and 4-7-8 breathing.
Recommended Free Tools
It also supports intention and emotion tracking, journaling, healthy-alternative prompts, and configured block sessions. That last point is important: one sec is no longer only a mindfulness pause. It can perform full blocking during a scheduled time or block session. Its browser extension works on Windows, macOS, and Linux, while the phone apps are available for iOS and Android. One account can be used across smartphones, tablets, and computers, and the company says one purchase covers all devices.
The official site reports a 57% average reduction in app openings. Treat that as the company’s reported result, not a guaranteed outcome for every user.
Best for: people who repeatedly open social apps without deciding to.
Limitation: an interruption is less absolute than a locked block unless you configure full blocking.
7. AppBlock — best for phone and browser coverage
AppBlock covers iOS and Android, with browser extensions for Chrome, Edge, and Brave. The official help center separates its documentation into Android, iOS, and Extensions sections, making it a practical option when your distractions include both mobile apps and desktop browsing.
The current paid tier is labeled Premium. AppBlock is worth considering if you want a dedicated blocker rather than the operating system’s basic timer controls, but check the current app build before following instructions from older guides. The official help material does not expose a reliably verified, detailed in-app menu sequence, so paths such as “AppBlock → Blocking → Add profile” should not be treated as universal.
Best for: users who want one product spanning mobile apps and major desktop browsers.
Limitation: exact controls and menu names may vary by platform and current app version.
8. Forest — best gamified focus timer
Forest turns a focus session into a small game: you plant a virtual tree, and leaving the session can cause it to die. That visible consequence is more motivating than a plain countdown for some people.
Forest is available for iOS/iPadOS and Android, with browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. It is not limited to a timer. The current feature set also includes Time Guard for blocking selected applications and tracking screen-time usage, plus Mindful Space for soundscapes, breathing exercises, and animations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Forest is a better match for building a repeatable focus habit than for enforcing a high-security lockout. The exact controls and button labels can vary by the current iOS or Android build, so use the in-app instructions rather than relying on an old menu path.
Best for: students and anyone motivated by progress, streaks, and visual rewards.
Limitation: the game mechanic may not be enough when you are determined to bypass a block.

9. ScreenZen — best friction-based option
ScreenZen adds a pause between the impulse and the app. It can use delays, reminders, and escalating waits between openings, with repeated checking potentially producing longer waits. That makes it different from a simple “allow” or “block” switch: you can still access an app when necessary, but automatic checking becomes inconvenient.
ScreenZen is available on iOS and Android. It is a good choice for someone who wants to reduce frequent social-media checks without completely removing access. However, exact current menu names, platform limitations, bypass behavior, and pricing should be checked in the current app and store listing. Available comparisons describe free functionality alongside a paid Pro tier, so do not assume every feature is free.
Best for: reducing habitual checking while keeping apps available.
Limitation: it is friction, not necessarily a hard block.
10. RescueTime — best for understanding where your time goes
RescueTime belongs in a focus-app list for a different reason. It is primarily an automatic time-tracking and productivity analytics tool rather than a dedicated hard blocker. It helps reveal how much time disappears into websites, apps, and recurring patterns, then supports more deliberate focus sessions.
Choose RescueTime when the first problem is lack of visibility. For example, a weekly report can show whether your distraction is actually social media, email, news sites, or frequent context switching. Choose Cold Turkey or Freedom instead when you already know what needs blocking and want stronger enforcement.
Because current features and platform availability can vary by edition, check the current RescueTime product details before relying on a particular command, menu path, or blocking capability.
Best for: users who need automatic reports and productivity analysis.
Limitation: it should not be assumed to enforce blocks as strongly as Freedom or Cold Turkey.

How to make a blocker work
- Block specific distractions first. Start with the two or three apps and sites that actually break your concentration. A huge blocklist creates unnecessary resistance.
- Use a schedule for predictable work. A recurring session is better than manually starting a block every morning.
- Keep essential communication available. Configure Always Allowed, an allow list, or permitted apps so an emergency does not become an excuse to disable everything.
- Protect the settings. Use Screen Time’s four-digit passcode, Digital Wellbeing’s App limits PIN, or the enforcement options in a dedicated blocker.
- Match the tool to the failure mode. Use one sec or ScreenZen for unconscious checking; Freedom or Cold Turkey when you knowingly bypass limits.
FAQ
What is the best focus app overall in 2026?
Freedom is the best all-around choice for blocking distractions across Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS. It supports one-time sessions of up to 24 hours and recurring sessions for longer schedules.
Is Apple Screen Time enough to block distracting apps?
For many iPhone and iPad users, yes. Turn on App & Website Activity first, then use Downtime, App Limits, and Always Allowed. Lock the settings with a four-digit Screen Time passcode if you do not want to change limits impulsively.
Do Android Digital Wellbeing app timers stay active permanently?
No. App timers reset at midnight. You can also delete a timer from the same App timers screen before midnight, so Digital Wellbeing is less resistant to deliberate bypassing than a locked third-party blocker.
