Zorin OS 16 Lite paired a familiar, customizable desktop with XFCE and was reported to feel responsive on one low-spec Chromebook. But its support period ended in April 2025, so it is not a suitable choice for a new everyday installation in 2026. This review explains what the release offered, what its performance evidence does—and does not—show, and how to try or install Zorin OS from USB if you choose a currently supported release instead.

What Zorin OS 16 Lite was

Zorin OS 16 Lite was the lightweight edition of Zorin OS 16, aimed at computers with limited resources. Zorin released it on 8 December 2021, based it on Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS, and built its desktop on XFCE 4.16. The release announcement positioned it for low-spec computers, including machines as old as 15 years; that was a target, not a promise that every computer of that age would work.

The appeal was a blend of a polished appearance and familiar desktop conventions. Zorin refreshed the theme and wallpapers, rewrote the taskbar to add hover previews, and included Zorin Appearance for changing the desktop’s look. A first-run Tour helped orient new users. The software store exposed Flathub alongside Snap and Ubuntu/Zorin APT repositories, while a Windows-installer assistant could suggest a Linux alternative or offer Windows App Support. The release also included Sound Recorder, Rhythmbox, fractional scaling, and recovery keys for encrypted installations.

Was it beautiful, simple, and fast?

Appearance and ease of use

The design was a central strength: theme options and desktop customization made Lite more visually polished than a bare XFCE setup, while the Tour and taskbar previews were intended to make everyday navigation approachable. Those are documented product features, not a guarantee that every user will prefer its look or workflow.

Performance on limited hardware

In an OMG! Ubuntu review updated 28 April 2022, the reviewer tried Zorin OS 16 Lite on a Chromebook with an Intel Celeron processor and 2 GB of RAM. The reviewer described general use as responsive, comparable to their experience with Gallium OS, and said apps opened quickly and window management was unhindered. This is one person’s account on one machine, not a controlled benchmark or a prediction for every old laptop.

The same reviewer reported an important limitation: opening GNOME Software maxed out memory on that Chromebook, and the software catalog took a long time to refresh. That experience suggests that the software-store workflow could feel heavy on severely constrained hardware even when ordinary desktop use felt responsive.

Lite versus Pro Lite

Zorin OS 16 Lite and Pro Lite shared the Lite desktop base, but offered different layout choices. Zorin’s 2021 release announcement described two layouts in free Lite and six in Pro Lite.

Can it run on a 2 GB RAM computer?

There is a historical example: the OMG! Ubuntu reviewer used Zorin OS 16 Lite on a 2 GB RAM Chromebook and reported responsive general use, but also memory saturation when opening GNOME Software. That makes 2 GB a plausible configuration in which the system could run, not a dependable minimum or a promise of comfortable performance. Processor, graphics, storage, drivers, and the applications you use all affect the experience.

Zorin Help’s system-requirements page, modified 9 January 2026, lists current general minimums of a 1 GHz dual-core 64-bit Intel/AMD processor, 2 GB RAM, and an 800 × 600 display. Those figures are not a version-specific Zorin OS 16 Lite specification. Check the current requirements and support information for the release you intend to install.

Is Zorin OS 16 Lite still supported?

No. Zorin’s 8 December 2021 release announcement stated: “Zorin OS 16 Lite will be supported with software updates and security patches until April 2025.” That date has passed. For everyday internet-connected use, choose a currently supported operating system rather than relying on an unsupported release.

Do not confuse that end date with a later commitment for the Lite series. In a 20 April 2024 forum response, Zorin co-founder Artyom Zorin said, “It will still receive software updates until at least June 2029, nearly the end of this decade.” He was referring to later Lite releases, not extending support for Zorin OS 16 Lite. The same response described the development work involved in adding and maintaining modern hardware support and features as context for plans eventually to sunset Lite.

How to install Zorin OS from a USB drive

Zorin Help’s installation instructions, modified 23 March 2026, specify a USB flash drive with at least 4 GB capacity for Core and Lite installation media. An 8 GB drive is a practical option with extra capacity, not an official minimum or a performance upgrade. Use an empty drive or copy its contents elsewhere first: writing the installer erases the USB.

  1. Get the installer for a supported release. Follow Zorin’s Install Zorin OS guide to obtain the ISO and prepare installation media. The guide names balenaEtcher as the writing utility.
  2. Write the ISO to USB. Select the downloaded ISO and the correct USB drive in balenaEtcher. Check the selected drive carefully because its contents will be erased.
  3. Try the live session first, if desired. Boot the computer from the USB and choose the option to try Zorin OS before installing. Zorin cautions that a live USB session runs slower than an installation on the computer, so it is useful for a preliminary check rather than a final performance judgment.
  4. Back up important files. Zorin warns that installing can overwrite data. Keep a separate copy of anything you cannot afford to lose before proceeding.
  5. Install only after checking compatibility and support. Follow the on-screen installer, and confirm that essential devices such as Wi-Fi, audio, and graphics work during the trial where possible.

Who should consider it?

Zorin OS 16 Lite remains interesting as a historical example of a polished lightweight Linux desktop, and its documented features and one reviewer’s Chromebook experience explain its appeal. Its expired support date is decisive for a fresh daily-use installation, however. If your goal is to revive an older computer, evaluate a currently supported release against that computer’s hardware and your required apps rather than treating Zorin OS 16 Lite’s old performance report as a guarantee.
