Zoom permanently removed its LinkedIn Sales Navigator app on April 1, 2020, after saying the feature caused “unnecessary data disclosure.” FTC Commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter said subscribing Zoom business customers could access LinkedIn profile data about other meeting participants, including people who wanted to remain anonymous. The available official statements do not establish exactly how the feature matched people or which profile fields it displayed.
What Zoom removed—and why
In a company message dated April 1, 2020, Zoom founder and CEO Eric S. Yuan listed the change among the company’s security and privacy actions: “Permanently removed the LinkedIn Sales Navigator app after identifying unnecessary data disclosure by the feature.” Zoom’s April 1 statement called the removal permanent and gave data disclosure as its reason.
The removed integration was LinkedIn Sales Navigator, not LinkedIn as a whole. The company’s announcement addressed that app; it did not say that all LinkedIn-related visibility or data sharing across other services had ended.
What meeting participants’ data could be seen?
In a 2020 dissent, FTC Commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter said Zoom business customers who subscribed to LinkedIn Sales Navigator “had access to LinkedIn profile data about other users in a meeting—even when the other user wished to remain anonymous.” She also noted that Zoom later said it had disabled the feature. The FTC commissioner’s statement describes the privacy concern, but it is not a field-by-field technical audit.

That supports a careful conclusion: according to the commissioner, the integration could make LinkedIn profile data about other meeting users accessible to subscribing customers, including people who wanted to remain anonymous. It does not establish a complete list of displayed details or mean every participant’s profile was exposed.
What the public record does not establish
Zoom’s announcement and the FTC commissioner’s statement do not specify the feature’s technical matching method. They do not say whether it relied on email addresses or another identifier, identify every profile field shown, quantify how many participants were affected, or establish how many customers accessed the data. They also do not document harm to a particular person. Those details should not be inferred from the fact that profile data was accessible.

Zoom’s reported meeting-participant totals at the time provide scale for the service, not an exposure estimate. Yuan said Zoom had approximately 10 million daily meeting participants at the end of December 2019 and more than 200 million in March 2020; neither figure measures people affected by this integration. Zoom’s April 1, 2020 message reported both figures.
How today’s visibility controls differ
LinkedIn: public profile versus Off-LinkedIn Visibility
LinkedIn’s current Off-LinkedIn Visibility help page describes a setting for opting out of eligible permitted services and developers displaying member profile information in external services. LinkedIn says the data available may vary with the integration and a member’s settings; some linked-service users may see information, potentially including connections data, beyond the public profile version. This is a general current LinkedIn control, not evidence that the removed Zoom integration is still available. LinkedIn also distinguishes Off-LinkedIn Visibility from public-profile visibility in search engines.

Zoom: privacy alerts and profile cards
Zoom’s present-day privacy-alert documentation describes notices about who may see, save, or share information in features such as chat, transcription, polls, and recordings, including sharing with apps. Its profile-card documentation says cards may display details such as a job title or company, subject to plan, account settings, authentication, and client requirements. These are separate current product features; neither is identified as a continuation of the LinkedIn Sales Navigator integration removed in 2020.

Slaughter summarized the security-and-privacy distinction in her 2020 dissent: “Strong security is necessary for consumer privacy, but it does not guarantee its achievement.” The statement concerns the broader privacy issue and does not supply additional technical details about the Sales Navigator feature. The Federal Register’s November 13, 2020 issue reproduced the commissioner’s statement and likewise noted Zoom’s subsequent account that it had disabled the feature and permanently removed the app.
