A digital signature lets someone verify that a particular message was signed with the private key matching a given public key. A zero-knowledge proof lets a prover establish a defined statement while limiting what the verifier learns about the secret or solution behind it. One is primarily about message-and-key authenticity; the other is about proving a claim with controlled disclosure.
What does a digital signature prove?
A digital signature is checked against both a message and a public key. The signer creates it using the corresponding private key; a verifier uses the public key to check whether the signature is valid for that message. The National Academies describes these complementary key roles in its discussion of cryptography.
A successful check supports a specific conclusion: the signature is valid for that message under that public key, assuming a secure scheme and correct use. It also supports message integrity: changing the signed message should cause verification to fail. It does not, by itself, establish who controls the key in the real world. Connecting a key to a person or organization depends on the surrounding identity, certificate, device, and key-custody arrangements.
Does a digital signature hide the message?
No. A signature authenticates the signed data; it does not encrypt or conceal that data. If the message needs confidentiality, it requires an additional mechanism. A verifier may be able to read the message even if they cannot produce a valid signature for it.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What does a zero-knowledge proof prove?
A zero-knowledge proof is built around a specified statement. A prover supplies a proof that allows a verifier to check the statement without learning additional information about the covered secret or solution, beyond what the proof system reveals. NIST’s Privacy-Enhancing Cryptography overview describes zero-knowledge proofs among privacy-enhancing techniques.
The statement must be defined precisely. A proof can establish only what that statement and the protocol cover; it does not automatically prove surrounding claims, conceal all related information, or establish that a real-world interpretation is correct. The guarantee depends on the proof system’s assumptions and on constructing the statement correctly.

Can a zero-knowledge proof prove something without revealing the secret?
That is the intended privacy property: the verifier can check the specified claim without being given the covered secret itself. But “zero knowledge” is not a promise that nothing is revealed. The statement’s truth is revealed, and information outside the protocol’s formal guarantee may remain exposed.
Also, not every zero-knowledge proof should be described as a proof of knowledge. NIST’s overview covers proofs of statements and knowledge of solutions; these concepts overlap in some systems but are not identical. The particular claim must be read from the construction being used.

How the two mechanisms differ
| Question | Digital signature | Zero-knowledge proof |
|---|---|---|
| What is checked? | Whether a signature verifies for a particular message under a public key. | Whether a proof establishes a specified statement under the proof system. |
| How is secret information used? | The private signing key creates the signature; the public key verifies it. | The prover may use secret information, often called a witness, to construct a proof; verification checks the statement without disclosing the covered secret under the system’s guarantee. |
| What assurance is intended? | Message-and-key authenticity and integrity, subject to key ownership, scheme security, and correct context. | Truth of the formally specified statement, subject to the proof system’s assumptions and correct statement construction. |
| What is disclosed? | The signature does not conceal the signed message. | The protocol limits information learned beyond the statement’s truth, as formalized for that system. |
Are zero-knowledge proofs and digital signatures alternatives?
They answer different questions, so they are not interchangeable choices in every design. A signature is useful when a verifier needs to check a message’s relationship to a signing key. A zero-knowledge proof is relevant when a verifier needs evidence for a defined claim without receiving the covered secret. Larger systems can use distinct constructions for distinct purposes.
The categories can also meet inside a construction: NIST notes that zero-knowledge proofs have served as a basis for some post-quantum signature candidates. That does not mean every proof is a signature or that the mechanisms offer the same assurance.

Why protocol details matter
“Zero-knowledge proof” names a family of approaches, not one universal protocol. For example, RFC 8235 specifies a Schnorr non-interactive zero-knowledge proof. It is a concrete protocol example, not a definition of all zero-knowledge systems. The statement proved, the information exposed, and the security assumptions depend on the particular design.
Neither mechanism establishes facts beyond its defined scope. A valid signature does not independently prove a signer’s identity or the truth of the message’s contents. A zero-knowledge proof does not establish unstated facts or guarantee privacy for information the protocol does not cover. The right question is therefore not which mechanism is universally stronger, but what the verifier needs to establish and what information should remain undisclosed.
