The alternative in “I ditched Chrome and Firefox for this modern, free, and open-source alternative” is Zen Browser. Its defining draw is a desktop interface built around vertical tabs and workspaces, with tools such as Split View and Compact Mode. That design may suit people who keep many tabs open or organize browsing by task, but it is not evidence that Zen is universally better than Chrome or Firefox. Zen is still labeled beta, and its feature set, streaming compatibility, and privacy claims come with practical caveats.
What Zen Browser is—and what it is not
Zen is a desktop web browser based on Firefox. Its official download page lists macOS, Windows, and Linux, and labels the software beta. That means it is a real alternative to install and use, but readers should expect active development rather than assume every feature is settled. Check the official download page for current platform availability and the release notes for the current version.
The phrase “better than Chrome and Firefox” is an individual author’s judgment, not a conclusion established by controlled comparisons. The available information does not establish that Zen is faster, more private, or easier for everyone. The practical question is whether its interface and workflow fit the way you browse.

Zen’s interface is organized around vertical tabs and Workspaces. Instead of treating a browser window as one undifferentiated pile of tabs, Workspaces let you separate browsing into distinct contexts. This can make a busy session easier to scan, especially if you often switch between unrelated tasks.

Workspaces and vertical tabs
Vertical tabs place tab labels in a side column rather than relying solely on a horizontal strip. The layout is a matter of preference: it can make tab titles easier to scan, while taking up screen width that some users would rather devote to a webpage. Workspaces add another layer of organization for separating groups of browsing activity.
Compact Mode, Glance, and Split View
Zen’s manual also documents Compact Mode, Glance previews, and Split View. These features aim to make browsing and page switching more adaptable, but the manual describes itself as incomplete and the browser as under active development. Treat the documentation as a guide to available concepts, not a guarantee that every detail is polished or will remain unchanged. See the Zen Browser User Manual for current feature guidance.

Customization: extensions and Zen Mods
Zen has two distinct customization paths. It supports extensions from Mozilla Add-ons, which add browser functions, and Zen Mods, which customize parts of Zen’s interface. They are not interchangeable: a mod is not simply a Firefox theme, and Zen’s documentation says Firefox themes are not supported. Check the extensions documentation before relying on a particular add-on or customization.

Zen’s active development is a reason to check release notes rather than assume a version number or capability remains current. On October 6, 2026, the project’s release notes listed version 1.23.1b, based on Firefox 157.0.1. Those are dated product details, not a promise about the version available when you download it.

Zen’s security page says the project tracks Firefox releases and aims to update within 0–72 hours. It also describes tracking protection and DNS over HTTPS options. These are project statements, not independent security measurements or guarantees. For current details, consult Zen’s security information and the dated release notes.
What Zen says about privacy and Sync
Zen’s privacy policy, last updated February 5, 2025, says the browser has removed Firefox telemetry and crash reports and does not collect telemetry, crash reports, IP addresses, browsing history, or search queries. The policy also acknowledges connections at startup for updates and other functions, so “no data collection” would be too broad a summary. These are Zen’s published statements, not an independent audit; the policy’s date also matters when assessing how current its details are.

Firefox Sync is optional. Zen says Sync uses Mozilla’s service, with synced data encrypted and stored on Mozilla’s servers under Mozilla’s privacy policy. Using Sync therefore involves a third-party service; read both providers’ current policies if that arrangement matters to you. Zen’s privacy policy explains its position.

Check streaming compatibility before switching
Digital rights management (DRM) support can determine whether a browser works with a particular video service. Zen’s FAQ says DRM playback is unavailable on macOS because Zen lacks a Widevine license. Windows requires more nuance: although the FAQ describes a license and approval limitation, October 6, 2026 release notes describe experimental Windows DRM playback. Experimental support does not guarantee compatibility with a specific service. Check the browser’s current settings and the service you use before making Zen your only browser for streaming. How to decide whether Zen fits your browsing
- Consider it if: you want a desktop browser centered on vertical tabs, Workspaces, and interface customization.
- Check first if: you depend on a particular extension, need a specific streaming service’s DRM playback, or expect every feature to behave like mature, settled software.
- Compare by your own needs: operating system, tab habits, extension requirements, Sync expectations, and streaming use are more useful decision criteria than broad claims that one browser is best.
Zen is downloadable software; the project’s download page lists macOS, Windows, and Linux. No additional physical product is required to try it.
