Neither game is the universal replay winner. Choose Breath of the Wild if you want a more focused return to Hyrule built around rediscovery and exploration. Choose Tears of the Kingdom if you want more systems to tinker with, including construction and object combinations, across Hyrule’s land, sky, and depths.

Which Zelda is better to replay?

The better pick depends on what you want a new playthrough to emphasize—not on a proven difference in replay hours. Nintendo’s descriptions point to two distinct attractions: Breath of the Wild sends Link into a dangerous world he no longer remembers, while Tears of the Kingdom, its sequel, expands the journey across Hyrule, floating islands, and the depths.

If you want… Replay… Why it fits
To rediscover Hyrule and follow a comparatively focused exploration loop Breath of the Wild Its map, towers, and shrine puzzles put surveying and exploring the land at the center. Nintendo’s features page describes those tools and activities.
More opportunities to build, combine, and try different solutions Tears of the Kingdom Ultrahand construction and Fuse combinations add experimentation to a journey through land, sky, and depths. Nintendo’s launch announcement highlights those abilities.

This is a preference-based recommendation, not a measured ranking. GamesRadar+ writer Sam Loveridge has argued that Tears of the Kingdom is larger and more nuanced while Breath of the Wild feels more controlled; that is one reviewer’s assessment, not an objective replay-value result. No controlled comparison of replay hours or official replay statistic is established by the cited sources.

What feels different on a return visit?

Breath of the Wild: rediscovery and a focused sandbox

Nintendo’s product description frames Link’s return as waking after a 100-year slumber in a world he does not remember. That setup gives a repeat playthrough a natural rediscovery angle: revisit the land, use towers to survey it, and take on shrine puzzles. The appeal is less about adding new mechanics and more about exploring Hyrule with a different route or set of priorities.

#1 Best Overall
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - For Nintendo Switch 2
  • Enhanced performance and visuals exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Explore the skies, caves, and vast lands of Hyrule in a massive open-world adventure.
  • Wield new and returning abilities to craft solutions, vehicles, and weapons.
  • Discover the mystery behind the spreading gloom threatening the kingdom.
  • Use the ZELDA NOTES app to share, compare, and earn daily bonuses.

Tears of the Kingdom: experimentation layered onto Hyrule

As the sequel, Tears of the Kingdom retains Hyrule as its setting but broadens the spaces to explore with sky islands and the depths. Ultrahand lets Link construct with objects, while Fuse combines items and equipment. If you enjoy testing ideas and finding alternate ways through situations, those systems give a replay a different focus from simply retracing familiar territory.

Which game should you replay first?

  • Pick Breath of the Wild for a return centered on exploration, landmarks, and the feeling of finding your way through a dangerous Hyrule again.
  • Pick Tears of the Kingdom if building and combining are the parts you most want to revisit, or if exploring multiple vertical layers sounds more appealing.
  • Play Breath of the Wild first if you have not played either. Nintendo explicitly identifies Tears of the Kingdom as its sequel. The replay choice itself, however, does not have to be framed as a simple old-versus-new decision: it is about which style of return you want.

Switch 2 editions and keeping a fresh save

Nintendo’s US Store lists physical Nintendo Switch 2 Editions for both games. Their product pages describe higher resolution, improved frame rates, faster loading, and a second save file. That second file can let you begin a fresh adventure while keeping a previous save available in the Switch 2 Edition.

Rank #2
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
  • Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
  • Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
  • Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.

The enhanced Zelda editions themselves are labeled Switch 2-only. Check the edition name and console compatibility before buying. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance covers original Switch games.

Optional replay help from ZELDA NOTES

ZELDA NOTES works with both Switch 2 Editions and does not require Nintendo Switch Online membership. It is accessed through the Nintendo Switch App on a compatible smart device; Nintendo’s game product pages say persistent internet is needed for app features. Its options include voice memories, navigation to selected shrines and Koroks, play and completion data, daily bonuses, compatible amiibo benefits, photo editing, and item sharing. With the Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition, it also supports sharing Autobuild schematics. Details are in Nintendo Support’s ZELDA NOTES guide.

Compatible Legend of Zelda amiibo are optional: Nintendo says they can grant in-game items in both games. ZELDA NOTES can provide an extra use of a figure after five scans that day; check Nintendo’s compatibility information before choosing a figure.
