YouTube announced in July 2025 that it would begin a limited US rollout of machine-learning age estimation. The system is intended to infer whether an account holder is under or over 18, even if the birthday on the account says otherwise. That is different from asking every user for ID, and it does not show that YouTube has launched the system worldwide.
Is YouTube using AI to check your age?
Yes. YouTube said it would start rolling out machine-learning age estimation to a small set of users in the United States over the weeks following its July 29, 2025 announcement. The company said it had used this approach in other markets, but did not name them or publish a current country-by-country rollout map. So the phrase “global age check crackdown” can blur separate developments. YouTube’s age estimation is a platform measure; government rules may require other age gates or restrict access to social media. The available information does not establish one coordinated worldwide rollout or mandate.

How does YouTube estimate whether an account holder is under 18?
YouTube says its model uses account-associated signals to estimate whether a user is over or under 18. The company named the kinds of videos a person searches for, categories of videos they watch, and how long the account has existed. Its estimate can override the birthday entered on the account.

The announcement did not publish an accuracy rate or explain how much weight each signal receives. Google’s broader description of age assurance also distinguishes an automated estimate from a later verification step; that general account should not be mistaken for a complete description of every YouTube flow. What happens if YouTube thinks you are a teenager?
YouTube said an account estimated to belong to a teen may receive several protections. These are described as potential outcomes, not as a guarantee that every feature will appear for every account.

Will YouTube ask you for ID?
Not necessarily. The initial step YouTube described is an estimate based on account signals, not a universal demand that users submit identification. If YouTube incorrectly estimates that an adult is under 18, the company said the person can verify that they are at least 18—for example, using a credit card or government ID. Google’s broader age-assurance description also mentions options such as a selfie for correcting an estimate, but it does not establish that this option is part of every YouTube age-check flow.
Estimation and verification are different: one predicts an age category from signals associated with an account; the other asks a person to provide proof or complete a check. YouTube’s announcement does not specify how long any verification material is retained or shared, so it does not support a more detailed claim about those practices.

Is YouTube’s AI age check happening worldwide?

United States: conditional FTC enforcement policy
In February 2026, the Federal Trade Commission issued a COPPA policy statement concerning certain age-assurance activities by covered general-audience and mixed-audience services. It said the Commission would not bring certain enforcement actions when a service collects, uses, or discloses personal information solely to determine a user’s age without first obtaining verifiable parental consent, provided the service meets stated conditions. Those include limiting the information’s purpose, deleting it promptly, constraining third-party disclosure, giving clear notice, using reasonable security, and taking reasonable steps toward accuracy. United Kingdom: a planned restriction on under-16s
Associated Press reported on June 15, 2026 that the UK had announced a planned restriction on under-16s’ use of social media that would include YouTube. The plan was expected to start in early 2027, with further details due later. AP also reported that the government received 116,000 consultation responses and that more than 90% reportedly supported an under-16 ban; those figures describe the government’s consultation and the proposal, not a completed restriction. Why YouTube opposes blanket account bans
In a December 2025 policy post, YouTube argued against blanket social-media account bans and promoted approaches such as parental controls, limits on risky features, privacy-preserving age estimation, and clear content standards.
