Test the complete audio-and-visual feed and your upload connection before launch, clear music rights for livestream use, and record a local archive: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured.
A continuous stream also needs a plan for network interruptions and ongoing operation. YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee uptime or automatic recovery, so test your own setup and avoid assuming an outside hosting service will handle it unless you have verified its capabilities.
Before You Start: Check Eligibility and Rights
YouTube’s livestreaming guidance says your channel must be verified and have no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube also states that streamers must be at least 16 years old. Check your channel’s access in YouTube Studio before preparing the broadcast.
Secure permission for every track before going live. “Royalty-free,” a paid subscription, or permission to upload a track does not necessarily cover continuous livestreaming, monetization, territories, or an archived recording. YouTube’s live-stream terms require creators to hold necessary rights for the live content, including relevant music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party material and may warn you, replace the picture with a placeholder, interrupt, or terminate the broadcast. A licensed track may still need its rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Confirm applicable terms and allowlisting with the rights owner before launch. YouTube’s Creator Music revenue-sharing tracks are not eligible for live streams under those usage requirements.
Choose an Encoder and Create the Stream
An encoder is a good fit for a produced music-and-visual feed with a looping background or overlays. YouTube names OBS as one example. Use equipment you already have where possible; the sources do not establish that any particular computer, hardware encoder, or audio device is required for this use case.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it.
- Prepare your audio playlist and visual loop in the encoder. Use music files and images or video that you have permission to use for this broadcast.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check that the sound is present, the visuals behave as intended, and the stream is accessible in the player.
- Run a test before making the stream public. YouTube recommends previewing, checking access from channel or watch pages and mobile devices, and monitoring stream quality.
Configure and Test Stream Quality
Choose settings your encoder and actual upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; its guidance says not to exceed four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or connection can run continuously.

Test with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast, then watch the preview and Stream Health messages. Verify that the sound remains stable, the visual loop works, and any local recording file grows if you are recording. Keep a record of the settings that work so you can restore them after a change.

Plan Upload Capacity and Continuity
Your encoder’s outgoing bitrate must fit the upload capacity available during real use. YouTube recommends leaving 20% spare upload capacity and warns that disruptions can break a stream. Test upload speed under the network conditions you expect, including other household or workplace traffic; a headline connection speed alone does not prove that the stream will be stable.
For a 24/7 operation, plan how you will notice an interruption and restore the stream. YouTube’s guidance does not establish guaranteed uptime or automatic restart behavior for a particular service. If you have a backup encoder or network path, test failover rather than assuming it will work.

Plan for Archives Separately
YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Do not promise viewers that YouTube will retain a full, uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.
If you want watchable YouTube archives as well as a continuous presentation, consider ending and restarting sessions below the stated threshold, while checking current platform behavior. Keep local recordings if retaining the content matters, and confirm your music rights cover any archived playback.

Monitor the Stream
Keep Live Control Room and Stream Health available during testing and operation. Review status messages and confirm that the stream remains accessible and that audio and visuals are working. If you change encoder settings or network arrangements, test the actual stream again before relying on them.
For scheduled events, YouTube recommends testing encoder failover. That advice applies when you actually have a backup encoder or path; it does not establish that a backup is present or that a service will automatically restart a continuous broadcast.

Can YouTube keep a 24/7 live stream archived?
