If a YouTube stream stalls just as your router renews an IP address, the timing is a useful clue—not proof that the renewal caused the interruption. First find out which address renewed: the router’s ISP-facing WAN address, or a device’s private LAN address. Then compare the stall time with router logs and check whether other devices and services also lost internet access.
What “the router renewed its IP” can mean
There are two separate DHCP relationships that can be described this way. The router may renew its WAN lease with the internet service provider (ISP), or a TV, computer, or other device may renew its private LAN lease with the router. A device renewing its LAN address is not the same event as the router renewing its ISP-facing address.
Microsoft’s DHCP troubleshooting guidance describes a client sending a unicast renewal request after 50 percent of its lease time has elapsed. That timing describes DHCP behavior; it does not mean a renewal should disconnect a router or interrupt YouTube playback. A stall occurring at about the same time could instead coincide with a brief WAN outage, modem reconnection, router reboot, or another network problem.

Diagnose the stall before changing settings
1. Establish which connection renewed
Open your router’s status page or event log and look for WAN or internet connection details. If the event refers to the router’s ISP-facing address or WAN lease, investigate the router-to-modem-to-ISP path. If it refers to a device’s LAN lease, the event concerns that device’s local connection. Menu names differ by manufacturer and model, so use the router’s manual rather than assuming a particular path or label.

- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
Do not assign a device a static LAN address as a presumed fix for a WAN-side renewal. They are separate connections, and changing one does not repair a failure on the other.
2. Record the time and inspect the router log
Write down the exact time playback stalls. Check the router log and status around that time for a WAN address change, lease renewal, link down/up event, modem reconnection or resynchronization, or router reboot. Note whether the internet returns on its own and how long the interruption lasts.

One NETGEAR Community report describes an R7400 user experiencing WAN disconnection at lease renewal. It is an individual report about one device, not evidence that renewals commonly disconnect routers or that the same cause applies to your network.
3. Check whether the problem is broader than YouTube
- Try another internet-connected device at the same time. If it also loses access, that points toward a shared network or internet-link interruption rather than a playback problem limited to one device.
- Check another service. A problem affecting multiple services is more consistent with a general connection issue than a YouTube-only fault.
- Replay the video on another supported device and, if possible, over a different internet connection. YouTube’s general playback troubleshooting guidance recommends changing the connection and testing another device when problems persist.
For TV playback, YouTube Help recommends a connection speed of at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. That is general playback guidance for TV, not a DHCP-renewal remedy or a test that can identify the cause of a stall.

- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
4. Check the physical and router-to-ISP path
Use the router maker’s model-specific troubleshooting instructions to check its reported internet or WAN status and distinguish a router, modem, or ISP problem. TP-Link’s guidance includes checking the internet/WAN IP and network path; its instability guidance also discusses cabling and firmware. These are checks, not proof that replacing a cable or updating firmware will fix a renewal-related interruption.
Keep router firmware current only by following the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model and hardware revision. TP-Link notes that firmware updates can address stability problems on specific models; that does not establish that a particular update fixes this symptom.

What to do if stalls keep matching WAN renewals
If repeated stalls line up with WAN lease events, contact your router maker or ISP with evidence rather than changing lease settings at random. Provide:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The router model and hardware revision.
- The installed firmware version.
- The time and duration of each interruption.
- Relevant WAN status and event-log entries, including whether the WAN address changed or the link went down and came back.
- Whether the modem reconnected or rebooted, and whether other devices and services lost access too.
The available guidance does not establish a universal lease timer or WAN setting that safely prevents this symptom. The right next step depends on the router, firmware, ISP, lease details, and what the logs show. Ask the manufacturer or ISP to interpret those details for your equipment and service.

When WAN failover is worth considering
A compatible router configured with a second, active internet connection can provide a backup path if it detects that the primary WAN is down. Failover is a continuity measure, not a confirmed repair for a renewal fault. Switching connections can interrupt existing sessions, so a YouTube live session is not guaranteed to survive the handoff.
Before buying or configuring a backup router, check its supported WAN, USB, or tethering modes; the exact hardware revision and firmware; failure-detection behavior; and the cost and data allowance of the second internet service. TP-Link’s dual-WAN guidance describes moving new sessions to another line after detecting a dropped primary connection, using online detection. A guide for the TP-Link TL-WR1502X travel router, updated May 20, 2025, describes Multi-WAN Backup and cautions that availability can vary by hardware revision, firmware, and region. Treat it as an option to investigate, not a promise of uninterrupted YouTube streaming.
A faster internet plan, Ethernet cable, UPS, or streaming stick should not be treated as a specific cure for WAN DHCP renewal: the cited guidance does not show that any of them fixes that cause. Trying another connection is useful for diagnosis; automatic continuity requires a compatible failover setup and a backup connection.
