The stream URL tells your encoder where to send your video; the stream key is the credential YouTube uses to accept and associate that feed with your stream. In a standard RTMP or RTMPS setup, enter the URL in the encoder’s Server or URL field and the key in its Stream Key field. They work together and are not interchangeable.
What the stream URL and stream key do
YouTube’s Live Control Room provides connection details for an encoder. The URL identifies the ingest server—the destination for the audio and video feed. The key is the credential that lets YouTube accept and associate the feed. YouTube Help uses the analogy that stream keys are like a stream’s “password and address”; for setup, keep the distinction clear: the URL is the destination, and the key is the credential. You generally need both values for a conventional RTMP/RTMPS encoder connection. A YouTube preset may handle server selection for you, but the encoder may still ask you to provide the key. How to enter them in an encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select an existing stream or create one.
- Copy the Stream URL shown for that stream into the encoder’s Server, URL, or RTMP Server field. If you selected RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL.
- Copy the stream key into the encoder’s Stream Key field, unless the encoder’s selected protocol and field instructions specify that the key is included in the URL.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled stream, confirm the preview appears, then click Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready. Starting the encoder sends the feed; it does not by itself complete the scheduled-stream go-live step. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
How RTMPS and HLS change the fields
RTMP and RTMPS
RTMPS carries RTMP traffic over TLS/SSL for encryption. In YouTube’s RTMPS workflow, select and copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, then provide the stream key in the encoder. The URL and key remain separate values. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS

HLS
In YouTube’s HLS workflow, the key is part of the URL, so the separate Stream Key field may not apply in the same way. Check the selected protocol and the encoder’s instructions; do not paste the key into the URL and also add it separately unless the encoder specifically requires that. Protect and reset a stream key
Treat the key as sensitive: someone who obtains it may be able to send a feed using it. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in the Stream tab of Live Control Room, then replace the old key in your encoder. YouTube says only channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

Troubleshoot a connection or startup error
- The encoder cannot connect: Check that the URL is in the server/URL field and the key is in the Stream Key field. Confirm they belong to the selected stream and that the encoder is using the intended protocol.
- You selected RTMPS: Make sure you copied the RTMPS URL rather than another server address. Keep the key in the encoder’s key field.
- You are using HLS: Check the encoder’s HLS instructions because the key is included in YouTube’s HLS URL. Avoid entering it twice unless instructed.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
- A third-party encoder reports an error starting: YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends getting a new stream key and updating the encoder. That is a troubleshooting step, not evidence that every startup error comes from a bad key. If the software connects by signing into YouTube and does not use a stream key, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
