If FFmpeg on your Windows VPS cannot publish to YouTube, check the current live event’s stream key and ingest URL first, then verify RTMPS support and outbound TCP 443 connectivity. An India-based VPS does not by itself prove the route is blocked. The exact error and the stage at which it occurs determine the fix.
Diagnose the failure in order
Work from the YouTube event settings outward to the VPS network. This separates a mismatched credential from an FFmpeg protocol problem, a firewall restriction, or an encoding issue. Do not post your stream key in a public issue, screenshot, or command example; treat it like a password.
- Open the correct live event in YouTube Studio. Go to Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab or the scheduled event you intend to use. Copy that event’s stream key and server URL into the FFmpeg destination. Keys and URLs must belong to the same intended stream. YouTube notes that returning streamers may see previous settings reload. If YouTube or the encoder reports a key-related startup error, obtain a new key in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
- Copy the current ingest URL; do not guess it. Live Control Room may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default. To get the RTMPS URL, use the lock icon next to Stream URL, then use the URL for the current event. For RTMPS, the scheme must be
rtmps, and the hostname and application path must match YouTube’s endpoint. Google’s documentation specifies TCP port 443 for RTMPS ingestion. If an SSL error persists, YouTube Help says to try specifying:443in the URL or encoder port field. Consult YouTube’s RTMPS Help and the RTMPS ingestion guide. - Check the FFmpeg build installed on the VPS. The relevant executable is that server’s
ffmpeg.exe; a different computer’s FFmpeg build does not establish which protocols the VPS build supports. Confirm that it supports the RTMP variant in the selected URL, and update to a current build if appropriate. A timeout can happen before YouTube checks the key, so it does not by itself show that the key is invalid. FFmpeg documents its supported protocols at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-protocols.html. - Test with a controlled file source and valid output. FFmpeg documents this real-time file-streaming pattern:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. For YouTube, replace the example destination with the current Live Control Room ingest URL and key, following the syntax supported by the installed build.-repaces a file source in real time; it does not repair an incorrect key or a blocked route. If you are relaying a live input rather than a file, inspect that input’s health and timestamps separately. - Check the failure stage. A timeout points first to the endpoint, RTMPS support, or outbound connectivity. An SSL or certificate error points to the URL scheme, hostname, port, or TLS setup. If FFmpeg connects but no preview appears, use the current event’s preview and stream-health indicators to investigate encoding and media warnings.
- Check Windows and provider egress rules. Verify Windows Defender Firewall and any VPS control-panel firewall or security policy allow the FFmpeg process or outbound TCP connections to YouTube on port 443. If a connection still cannot be established, ask the VPS provider whether outbound TCP 443 or sustained RTMPS is restricted and request connection-level diagnostics. The right Windows Server UI path and provider settings vary; without the Server version and provider, a universal provider-specific procedure cannot be given.
- Use YouTube’s stream-health report after data arrives. YouTube Live health reporting can flag unsupported audio or video codecs, missing media streams, bitrate warnings, and keyframe intervals. The LiveStreams API’s GOP guidance identifies keyframe frequency of four seconds or less as its threshold. These warnings concern the data reaching YouTube; they do not prove the key is correct when FFmpeg cannot connect. See the LiveStreams API documentation.
Match the error to the next check
| Symptom | Check first | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg fails at startup or YouTube reports a key error | Confirm the key and URL for the selected event; if the startup error indicates a key problem, create a new key in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg. | YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends replacing the key for encoder startup errors. A key should not be assumed wrong solely because a connection timed out. |
| SSL or certificate error | Verify the current RTMPS URL, scheme, hostname, port 443, and the installed FFmpeg build’s RTMPS support. | The failure may be in URL or TLS setup, not stream content. |
| Connection timeout | Check the URL and endpoint, RTMPS support, outbound TCP 443, and Windows or provider firewall rules. | The client may not be reaching YouTube’s ingest service, so the key may not yet be under test. |
| FFmpeg connects, but there is no usable preview or YouTube shows a health warning | Inspect the current event’s preview and health issue list for codec, bitrate, keyframe, audio, or video warnings. | The connection is established; investigate the media output separately from credentials and egress. |
| Encoder output looks healthy, but delivery is unstable | Test outbound internet quality and ask the VPS provider to inspect the route. | A locally healthy output does not rule out a network problem between the VPS and YouTube. |
What to collect if it still fails
For a useful next diagnosis, record the exact FFmpeg error and when it occurs, the FFmpeg version/build configuration on the VPS, the sanitized command with the stream key removed, and whether the endpoint is RTMP or RTMPS. Also note the Windows Server version, relevant outbound firewall policy, and provider diagnostics. YouTube’s guidance recommends checking the outbound internet connection when stream delivery is problematic. Do not share the key itself.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a repair for a failing FFmpeg command: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
