If OBS shows a connection but YouTube Live Control Room still says offline, first check whether the correct event is open and whether its preview has appeared. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow is to wait for the preview and click Go live—unless auto-start is enabled. If there is no preview, check the event’s server URL and current stream key before changing encoder settings.
Why OBS can show connected while YouTube is offline
The two statuses refer to different parts of the workflow. OBS’s connected indicator is encoder-side information; by itself, it does not prove that YouTube has started the event. YouTube’s documented scheduled-stream workflow has a separate event step: receive the feed, show its preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live unless auto-start is enabled. YouTube’s guidance does not define exactly what OBS’s connected label means, so treat it as a sign to check the destination and YouTube event rather than proof the event is public.
YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Use the current key for the intended stream, and keep it private. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains where to manage stream settings and keys.

Open the intended event and check its start setting
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room for the event you mean to broadcast. Confirm that the event is the one OBS should be sending to. If it is scheduled, wait for the preview. When it appears, click Go live unless auto-start is enabled. YouTube also provides auto-stop controls in stream settings; check the event’s current configuration rather than assuming it will start automatically. See YouTube’s stream settings instructions.

If there is no preview, verify OBS’s destination and key
Compare the server URL and stream key configured in OBS with the values shown for the intended stream in Live Control Room. Make sure OBS is sending to that destination, not an old event or another stream. If you reset the key in YouTube, update OBS with the new one. A key should be treated like a password: do not share it or publish screenshots that reveal it. YouTube explains key setup and reset in its live streaming settings guide.

Read YouTube’s stream health and error message
Once a feed reaches YouTube, use the health indicator and any specific error in Live Control Room to choose the next check. YouTube says the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check the stream being sent for errors. Avoid changing resolution, bitrate, or codecs at random when YouTube has given a more specific diagnostic. See YouTube’s stream health and error guidance.

If the feed arrives but is unhealthy, isolate the encoder, source, and network
Check that OBS is current, inspect the picture and sound being sent, look for encoder errors and high CPU load, and test outbound internet strength. If the preview itself looks or sounds wrong, investigate the video and audio sources routed into OBS. If the feed looks and sounds healthy but YouTube reports interruptions or poor delivery, investigate outbound connectivity. YouTube recommends leaving bandwidth headroom; its streaming tips suggest 20%, without establishing a publication date for that figure. See YouTube’s streaming tips and troubleshooting guidance.

Change format settings only when the error points to them
YouTube’s error reference identifies a format mismatch when video is not H.264 or audio is not AAC. It also lists a keyframe-frequency mismatch between primary and backup streams. These are targeted checks for corresponding error messages, not universal fixes for an offline event. Consult YouTube’s error reference before changing encoder settings.

Confirm the viewer-facing event works
After starting the event, check that its public or unlisted watch page is accessible from the channel and watch pages, then continue monitoring stream health. A feed preview in Studio and a live event viewers can reach are distinct checks. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Common missteps and when to escalate
- Changing settings before reading the health message: first use the error attached to the current stream to identify whether this is an event-start, destination, format, or delivery problem.
- Reusing a reset or mismatched key: use the current key shown for the intended event and update OBS if you reset it.
- Assuming a preview means viewers can watch: start the event as required, then verify the watch page is accessible.
- Buying hardware without evidence of a hardware fault: first inspect source quality, OBS encoder errors, CPU load, and outbound connectivity. The checks above do not by themselves establish that a capture device, router, or other purchase is needed.
If the problem persists after YouTube’s checks, use its report-a-problem route. If you are trying to log into YouTube through third-party software without a stream key, YouTube directs users to the relevant software support team; that is a different situation from configuring OBS with a stream key.
