Get the current RTMPS ingestion URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then pass them into your container using the variable names your image or startup script expects. An entrypoint or command must read those values and build FFmpeg’s destination; declaring a variable alone does not start a stream.
What you need before configuring Docker
- A YouTube stream key and the matching ingestion URL, retrieved from the current Live Control Room configuration.
- An FFmpeg image or your own container startup script that consumes the configuration and launches FFmpeg.
- A secure way to provide the key at runtime. Treat it as a credential: do not commit a working key to a Compose file, publish it in an example, or print it in logs. The appropriate injection method depends on your deployment.
YouTube’s RTMPS instructions direct creators to retrieve the stream key and RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. The API represents the ingestion URL and stream name as separate fields. An encoder may accept them separately or require them joined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; follow the form expected by your FFmpeg command or image. Find the current YouTube URL and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select or create the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current stream key and ingestion URL shown for that stream. If you want encrypted transport, specifically choose the RTMPS URL; the default RTMP address is not the same protocol.
- Keep the URL and key in separate configuration values unless your encoder’s documented interface requires a combined destination. Check whether the URL already includes the stream name before appending anything, so you do not add the key or name twice.
Do not rely on a hard-coded endpoint from an old example. The URL and key are tied to the current stream setup; retrieve them from Live Control Room or the relevant API resource. If configuring redundancy, distinguish the primary and backup addresses rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Choose variable names your container actually reads
The variable name is an interface chosen by the image, Compose configuration, or wrapper script—not by YouTube or FFmpeg. A project might use YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY, STREAM_KEY, or another name, but none is universal. Read the selected image’s documentation or inspect your own entrypoint to learn which name it consumes.

For example, this schematic Compose fragment forwards a variable from the environment where Compose is run:

YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY: ${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}This fragment only makes the value available inside the container. It does not tell FFmpeg to use it, and it does not launch FFmpeg. Your startup command must read the variable and construct the output using the current ingestion URL and the destination format expected by the encoder. Supply the value through a private runtime mechanism appropriate to your deployment; avoid placing the literal key in a committed Compose file or exposing it through diagnostic output.

Connect the values to FFmpeg’s output
Configure the entrypoint or wrapper to consume the URL and key and pass the resulting destination to FFmpeg. The exact output syntax depends on whether the URL already contains the stream name or expects it appended, and on how the chosen image accepts configuration. Do not assume that setting an environment variable automatically changes FFmpeg’s arguments.
- Keep the ingestion address and key/name distinct in configuration when that makes the command easier to validate.
- Build the final destination once, in the command or entrypoint, according to the current Live Control Room values and the image’s documented interface.
- Prevent shell tracing or application logging from revealing the expanded destination if it contains the key.
- Do not copy a sample key from a tutorial or use a stale URL in production.
There is no single safe, copy-and-paste FFmpeg command for every Docker image: the entrypoint, input media, encoding settings, and whether the output expects a separate or combined URL/name all vary. Confirm those details in the image or script you selected before starting the container.

RTMPS or RTMP, and separate or combined destination?

For RTMPS, Google’s guide says the connection must use port 443 and the ingestion server’s hostname for SNI; the guide was last updated 2026-09-14 UTC. YouTube Help also advises checking RTMPS support in the encoder if a connection times out, and trying port 443 when an SSL error persists despite an apparently correct URL. See YouTube Help on RTMPS.
Verify the stream after connecting
A successful connection does not guarantee a healthy stream. Check the Live Control Room status and, if you use the API, inspect the LiveStreams health/configuration information. Documented issue categories include low or high bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, missing audio or video, unsupported codecs, audio codec problems, and sample-rate problems. Correct the encoder settings or input that corresponds to the reported issue, then confirm the stream status again.

Troubleshoot common connection failures

| FFmpeg reports a missing or empty key | The container did not receive the variable, or the startup script expects a different name. | Check the image or entrypoint’s expected variable name and verify that the runtime injection reaches the container. Do not print the secret to verify it. |
