If YouTube warns that your live stream has no audio, the first step is to read the exact message beside the Health Indicator in Live Control Room—not to change loudness blindly. YouTube’s health checks flag technical problems such as missing audio, unsupported codecs, incorrect bitrate or sample rate, multiple audio streams, or too many channels. Loudness is a separate question: a technically healthy stream can still sound too quiet, too loud, distorted, or inconsistent.
What a YouTube stream health warning means
In Live Control Room, YouTube places live-stream errors beside the Health Indicator and timestamps them. YouTube describes red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. A red issue may prevent a stream from starting or affect viewers; a yellow issue may degrade quality. Read the complete message and its timestamp, since an unresolved problem can recur. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance explains the documented error types and responses.
An audio health warning is about the audio YouTube is receiving and whether it fits technical expectations. It is not a loudness meter: a warning-free indicator does not establish that a music programme has consistent perceived volume, and a codec warning is not fixed by changing programme loudness.

Start by checking whether the encoder is sending an audio signal at all. Then check the source, routing, and encoded output. YouTube’s documented audio errors include missing audio, multiple audio streams, an unsupported codec, an incorrect bitrate or sample rate, and more than two audio channels. Follow the specific warning and compare the encoder’s current settings with YouTube’s encoder settings, since platform specifications can change.

Recommended audio settings to check
| Setting | YouTube guidance surfaced in current encoder documentation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 are listed in encoder settings; the RTMP/RTMPS error guidance specifies AAC in its expected configuration. | Use a supported codec and match the exact warning. For a codec error, select AAC as specified in the RTMP/RTMPS guidance. |
| Audio bitrate | 128 Kbps for stereo | Confirm the encoder is set to the recommended stereo bitrate and is actually outputting audio. |
| Sample rate | 44.1 kHz for stereo | Check the encoder’s audio sample-rate setting against the warning and YouTube guidance. |
| Audio streams and channels | One audio stream; mono or stereo, not more than two channels | Disable unintended duplicate audio tracks and make sure the output is not multichannel. |
These are encoder and ingest checks, not a promise that every audible defect will trigger a YouTube warning. YouTube’s current settings page is the authority to recheck if labels or supported ingest options have changed.
What audio bitrate should I use for YouTube Live?
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. It lists a stereo sample rate of 44.1 kHz and supports AAC or MP3 in encoder settings. For RTMP/RTMPS, its audio-error guidance calls for AAC in the expected configuration. Use these as technical starting points, then resolve any warning against the exact message and current official settings; they do not specify how loud or dynamically consistent the music should sound.

How to diagnose a 24/7 music stream, step by step
- Read the warning. Open Live Control Room, note the full Health Indicator message and timestamp, and establish whether it is red or yellow. Correct the named issue rather than guessing from the color alone.
- Verify the incoming audio configuration. Confirm the encoder is sending one audio stream, with one or two channels, using a supported codec. For stereo, check YouTube’s documented 128 Kbps bitrate and 44.1 kHz sample rate guidance. Compare the exact error with the current encoder settings.
- Listen at the encoder and inspect the signal path. Monitor the encoder output directly and check its dashboard for errors. Review CPU load and the local recording or archive, if available. If the archive or encoder output already sounds wrong, investigate the music source, mixer, routing, or gain before the stream reaches YouTube. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality continuously; see its live-streaming tips.
- Separate encoding faults from network faults. If the local output and archive sound healthy, examine the outbound connection. YouTube advises that upload bandwidth must support the total streaming bitrate and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Where applicable, account for both primary and backup stream bitrate. Its streaming metrics guidance covers connection and stream metrics. A network interruption can break a stream; it is not the same diagnosis as an audio codec, channel, or sample-rate error.
- Check the audience-facing playback. Test representative music before relying on the stream, check the preview, and listen to the playback viewers receive. If the encoder sounds fine but listeners report a problem, examine the outbound connection and playback path as well as the source.
What LUFS should a 24/7 YouTube music stream be?
The YouTube Help guidance cited here gives encoder and stream-health settings but does not establish a YouTube-specific LUFS target for continuous music. In particular, do not treat a commonly repeated number such as −14 LUFS or the broadcast recommendation below as a YouTube Live requirement.
For context, the European Broadcasting Union’s EBU R 128 version 5.0 (November 2023) recommends average programme loudness of −23 LUFS and uses Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors. That is broadcast guidance, not a YouTube Live rule. Use loudness measurements to understand your programme and make deliberate mix or gain decisions, not to clear an ingestion warning.

What a loudness meter tells you
Peak meters show instantaneous peaks, while loudness measurements help assess perceived programme level over time. EBU Mode includes Momentary readings over 400 ms, Short-term readings over 3 seconds, and Integrated loudness measured from start to stop. These views can help identify sudden level changes or long-term imbalance in a playlist. They do not certify that YouTube requires a particular LUFS or true-peak value.
How to keep audio checks useful on a 24/7 channel
Before starting, prepare the stream in advance, send representative audio, check the preview, and listen to the audience-facing playback. During operation, assign a person or an alerting process to monitor audio and stream health. These are YouTube’s general live-streaming recommendations, not a stated 24/7 uptime service level or guarantee that every audible fault will be detected.

- Check for silence, clipping or distortion, channel imbalance, abrupt level changes, and unintended gaps by listening to the outgoing feed.
- Keep technical health checks and loudness assessment separate: fix codec, bitrate, sample-rate, or channel warnings in the encoder; address audible level or consistency in the source mix and gain.
- If the stream is healthy at the encoder but playback is not, investigate the connection and audience playback path rather than assuming the Health Indicator covers every issue.
Common audio-warning and loudness problems
| Symptom | Likely layer to inspect | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| “No audio” or silence | Source, mixer/routing, or encoder input | Confirm audio reaches the encoder, monitor its output, and compare it with the local archive. |
| Unsupported audio codec | Encoder output format | Choose a supported codec; for RTMP/RTMPS, check YouTube’s expected AAC configuration. |
| Incorrect bitrate or sample rate | Encoder audio settings | Check the documented stereo guidance: 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, then re-read the current settings page. |
| Multiple audio streams or more than two channels | Encoder track selection or channel layout | Send one audio stream in mono or stereo and disable unintended tracks or multichannel output. |
| Audio sounds quiet, too loud, distorted, or inconsistent despite healthy ingest | Source mix, gain, dynamics, or playlist transitions | Listen to the outgoing programme and use loudness readings over time where appropriate; do not treat a valid bitrate as proof of good loudness. |
| Encoder and archive sound fine, but stream playback falters | Outbound network or audience playback path | Check upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and inspect the playback path. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a green or warning-free Health Indicator prove my music sounds right?
No. It reports documented stream-health checks; you still need to listen to the outgoing feed to assess audible quality and consistency.
Can I use a loudness meter to fix a missing-audio warning?
No. A loudness meter assesses programme level over time. For a missing-audio warning, check that audio reaches the encoder and that its output configuration meets YouTube’s ingest requirements.
