Switching from RTMP to RTMPS does not, by itself, require a different video format. First check the exact message beside the Health Indicator in YouTube Live Control Room: an SSL error or timeout points to the RTMPS connection, while a connected stream with a health warning may have a separate encoding, bitrate, keyframe, audio/video, resolution, or bandwidth problem.
Start with the exact warning in Live Control Room
Read the message beside the Health Indicator and note its timestamp. YouTube distinguishes critical red errors, which can prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems, from moderate yellow errors, which may reduce stream quality. An unresolved message continues to appear, so use its wording to choose what to check rather than assuming RTMPS caused every warning.
The encoder model, warning text, bitrate, and network conditions determine the cause. Without those details, no single root cause can be identified.
If the encoder reports an SSL or certificate error
- Copy the RTMPS endpoint from YouTube. In Live Control Room, open the stream or scheduled event, then go to the Stream tab or its stream settings. Use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS server URL and copy it into the encoder. The interface may show an RTMP URL by default; make sure you have selected the RTMPS version.
- Check the protocol, server, and key. The URL must use the
rtmpsprotocol and the server shown in Live Control Room. Enter the stream key as well. Do not substitute an example host for the actual endpoint assigned to your stream. - Try port 443 if the URL is correct but the SSL error remains. Set port 443 in the URL or the encoder’s port field, depending on how that encoder accepts the endpoint.
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the stream in transit. Changing transport does not mean the video codec or resolution must automatically change.

As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
If the connection times out
- Recheck the RTMPS server URL and stream key against Live Control Room.
- Check the encoder’s documentation for RTMPS support, or select a built-in YouTube RTMPS preset if it offers one.
- Update the encoder if an update is available, then test the connection again.
If the timeout persists, the encoder may not support RTMPS. A timeout is a connection problem; changing the video’s bitrate or resolution will not establish RTMPS compatibility.
If the stream connects but health is still poor
Once connected, treat the specific Live Control Room health message as the guide. YouTube’s health errors can concern the stream format or codec, bitrate, audio streams or channels, video streams or interlacing, frame rate, keyframe interval, resolution, or mismatched primary and backup streams. Correct the setting named by the warning rather than changing unrelated settings.

Check codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are actually sending. Recommended bitrates vary by all three; a number suitable for one combination may be wrong for another. For example, YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC at the same resolution and frame rate. These are configuration recommendations, not guarantees that a stream will be healthy.
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion, supports video codecs including H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Check the current official table for your exact configuration because recommendations and interface details can change.

Check audio and video streams
If the warning names audio, verify that the encoder is sending the expected audio stream and channel configuration. If it names video, check the reported codec, resolution, frame rate, or interlacing setting. For a primary/backup stream mismatch warning, compare the corresponding settings on both streams and correct the difference the message identifies.
Check upload capacity and network conditions
Your available upload bandwidth must be sufficient for the outgoing bitrate. YouTube recommends about 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. If you are using dual-streaming or failover, allow for the combined primary and backup bitrate plus headroom. Other devices or applications sharing the connection, as well as network disruption, can undermine reliability even when encoder settings are correct.

Test the configuration before the event
- Set up the stream in advance with the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and keyframe interval.
- Use representative motion and audio; a test should resemble the actual content closely enough to reveal encoding and bandwidth problems.
- Start the encoder and preview the stream in Live Control Room. Watch for health messages and confirm that the event is reachable.
- Leave time to correct issues. YouTube’s streaming tips suggest setting up at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start.
Quick diagnosis: connection problem or stream-health problem?
| What you observe | What it points to | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| SSL/certificate error or connection timeout | RTMPS endpoint, port, or encoder compatibility | Verify the RTMPS URL and server; try port 443 for an SSL error; confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. |
| The stream connects, but Live Control Room reports health issues | An encoding, ingestion-setting, or bandwidth problem may remain | Follow the exact error category; check codec, bitrate, keyframes, audio/video settings, resolution, and upload headroom. |
