A change from 1080p to 720p is a good reason to recheck your encoder, but it does not reveal the cause of a YouTube stream-health warning by itself. Start with the exact message in YouTube Live Control Room, then verify the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and available upload bandwidth the encoder is actually sending.

Start with the exact stream-health message

In YouTube Live Control Room, open the event and inspect Stream status. YouTube says this area provides specific error messages and instructions; use the message shown for your stream rather than assuming the resolution change caused the warning. The exact alert, encoder, codec, frame rate, bitrate, and network conditions are not known here, so there is no basis to diagnose one specific fault.

Keep the message text available while checking settings. If you ask someone to troubleshoot, include the exact wording along with your encoder name and the settings below.

Verify the encoder’s actual output

Check the encoder’s outgoing signal, not just the resolution selected in the YouTube event setup. YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default. Manual resolution selection is available when using a custom stream key; if you have enabled it, make sure the encoder’s output matches that selection. YouTube recommends automatic detection by default. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance explains the supported options.

  • Resolution: 720p video is 1280×720. Confirm the encoder is sending those dimensions after the change.
  • Frame rate: Check the encoder’s outgoing frame rate, not only the project or source setting. YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps.
  • Codec: Identify whether the outgoing stream uses H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. The bitrate recommendations differ by codec.
  • Bitrate: Confirm the current video bitrate in the encoder. Compare it with the relevant live-ingestion figures below, using the codec and frame rate actually sent.
  • Stream key and resolution mode: Verify that the event is using the intended key, and check whether resolution is on automatic detection or a manual setting.

Compare live bitrate with the right YouTube target

The figures below are YouTube Help’s current recommendations for live ingestion, not measured outcomes. The retrieved page does not display a publication date. Use the row for the outgoing resolution and frame rate, and the column for the outgoing codec.

Outgoing video H.264 minimum H.264 recommended AV1/H.265 minimum AV1/H.265 recommended
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

The 1080p rows are useful for checking what the encoder may have been set to before the change; they are not targets to retain after the encoder is correctly sending 720p. These recommendations are specific to live ingestion and vary by codec and frame rate. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for its complete guidance.

Check bitrate mode and keyframes

For RTMP/RTMPS encoder ingest, YouTube’s guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval not exceeding four seconds. Check these values in the encoder’s output or streaming settings; labels vary by application. Also confirm the video codec is one of the listed supported options and the frame rate does not exceed 60 fps. Change one setting at a time if you are troubleshooting so you can tell whether the warning changes.

Make sure upload bandwidth has headroom

Run a realistic upload-speed test on the connection used for streaming. Download speed is often higher than upload speed, and an office or home connection may be shared. Compare available outbound capacity with the stream bitrate and other simultaneous traffic, including any backup stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom; a speed test result barely above the stream bitrate is not comfortable margin. YouTube’s encoder guidance includes its bandwidth advice.

There is no single internet-speed number that fits every stream: the required capacity depends on the actual bitrate and concurrent network use. If upload speed fluctuates, reduce competing traffic or test over a more stable connection before changing resolution again.

Do not use upload-video bitrates for a live stream

YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading a video file list 5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rates and 7.5 Mbps at high frame rates. Those figures are for video uploads, not live encoder ingestion, so use the live figures above when setting a stream. YouTube’s video upload encoding settings covers the separate upload guidance.

Troubleshoot in a controlled order

  1. Record the warning. Copy the exact Stream status message and any instructions it provides.
  2. Confirm the signal. Check the encoder’s outgoing dimensions, frame rate, codec, and bitrate while the event is live.
  3. Check detection mode. Confirm whether the stream key uses automatic resolution detection or a manual selection, and make the encoder output agree with that choice.
  4. Compare the bitrate. Use the live-ingestion recommendation matching the actual codec and frame rate; do not carry over a 1080p target automatically.
  5. Verify encoder format. Check CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and a frame rate at or below 60 fps.
  6. Test the network. Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, allowing for other traffic.
  7. Recheck Stream status. After a change, observe whether the warning clears or a different message appears. Follow that message rather than making unrelated changes.

Common checks and fixes

What you find What to check or do
Encoder still reports 1080p Confirm the output dimensions are 1280×720 and that the encoder change was applied to the active stream profile.
YouTube resolution is set manually Check that the outgoing encoder resolution matches the manual selection. If you did not intend to use manual selection, review the stream key’s resolution mode.
Bitrate is based on the former 1080p setting Compare the current outgoing bitrate with YouTube’s 720p live recommendation for the actual codec and frame rate.
Keyframe interval or bitrate mode differs Check for CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
Upload test is close to stream bitrate or varies Reduce competing traffic or use a more stable connection, then retest with 20% headroom.
Warning persists despite matching settings Use the exact Stream status message and its instructions to continue diagnosis; the title alone does not identify the cause.

Copyright and reused content are separate checks

A stream-health warning is a technical status, not by itself a finding about copyright or monetization. If you are streaming recorded material, make sure you have the rights to use it and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. Technical settings cannot establish whether a video is authorized or eligible for monetization.
