If YouTube Live Control Room warns that your frame rate is too high, read the exact message beside the Health Indicator and lower your encoder’s output to the maximum it specifies. Then check that keyframes are sent every two seconds. If the warning persists, determine whether the problem is in the encoded video or your internet connection before changing more settings.

What the frame-rate warning means

YouTube’s live error guidance includes the message: “The current frame rate is too high. Please set the frame rate to X fps or less.” The number in the message is the limit to follow for that stream. YouTube’s general encoder guidance allows frame rates up to 60 fps, but a specific warning may set a lower maximum.

Errors appear beside the Health Indicator in Live Control Room, along with a timestamp. An unresolved error may continue to reappear. Red errors are critical and may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors are moderate and may reduce stream quality. Read the complete message rather than treating every warning as a generic 60 fps limit. YouTube’s live streaming error messages describe the warning and the correction it calls for.

Fix the encoder settings first

  1. Read the maximum in the warning. Open Live Control Room and find the frame-rate error beside the Health Indicator. Note the stated maximum, such as “X fps or less.”
  2. Lower the encoder’s output frame rate. In your streaming encoder’s video or output settings, set the output to no more than the warning’s maximum. YouTube’s general guidance supports up to 60 fps, but use the lower limit if the current error specifies one.
  3. Set the keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its error guidance notes that frame rate and keyframe frequency are linked; after changing frame rate, check that keyframes arrive every two seconds.
  4. Check how the stream is configured in YouTube. Live Control Room detects encoder settings automatically by default. Resolution and frame rate are generally auto-detected unless you created a custom stream key and enabled manual resolution settings. Confirm that the settings you expect are the settings actually being sent.
  5. Restart or reconnect the stream if needed, then watch the Health Indicator. Check whether the same error returns and note any new message or timestamp. Follow the new message rather than making unrelated changes.

YouTube’s general encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 options; CBR bitrate encoding; a frame rate up to 60 fps; and a recommended 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. These are general recommendations, not a substitute for the current warning or your encoder’s capabilities. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.

Check bitrate without confusing it with frame rate

A frame-rate warning is not, by itself, a direction to raise or lower bitrate. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, and a bitrate recommendation does not guarantee that your connection can sustain the stream. For H.264, YouTube lists these examples:

Resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not guaranteed suitable rates for every connection. Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain and test it; avoid changing resolution or bitrate without considering the codec, frame rate, and available upload capacity. YouTube publishes the full recommendations in its live encoder settings guide.

Work out whether the encoder or connection is at fault

Use the encoder’s own preview or output to separate a source or encoding problem from a network problem. YouTube recommends checking how the stream looks and sounds in the encoder before blaming the connection. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance supports these diagnostic branches:

What you find What to check next
The stream looks or sounds poor in the encoder Check the video and audio sources routed into the encoder, review encoder errors and CPU load, and inspect the local recording or archive for the same defects. If those checks do not reveal a problem, consider trying a different encoder.
The encoder output looks healthy, but viewers or Live Control Room show trouble Test the outbound internet connection. If the test identifies a problem, contact your internet service provider (ISP).

Do not assume that a new computer, cable, adapter, or encoder is required. The checks above help identify whether the cause is the source, encoder processing, or outbound connection before you spend money.

Test before the event and monitor while live

  • Run a test stream with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast; a static or silent test may not expose problems that appear under normal conditions.
  • Start the encoder before the event and review the preview in Live Control Room before going live.
  • Check stream health and messages in the dashboard, then verify that the broadcast is accessible on the channel or watch page and on mobile devices.
  • During the broadcast, continue monitoring audio and video quality rather than relying on the initial preview alone.

YouTube’s live streaming tips cover testing, previewing, and monitoring a broadcast.
