“Excellent” stream health does not necessarily mean viewers can watch your broadcast. It indicates that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed; the event may still need to be started in Live Control Room, or your encoder may be sending to a different event. Check the event’s state first, then confirm the stream key and encoder output, and finally test the connection.
1. Check whether the event is actually live
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and select the intended event in Live Control Room. Make sure you are looking at the correct scheduled stream rather than another event.
- For a scheduled encoder stream, check whether the preview has appeared. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to wait for the preview and then click Go live in Live Control Room when that action is required. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain this step.
- After starting the event, open its watch page or channel page and check that it is accessible as a viewer. If practical, check from a phone or another device rather than relying only on the Studio preview. YouTube’s streaming tips and computer live-streaming tips provide viewer-side checks.
Keep the two states separate: an encoder can be sending data successfully while the selected event has not been started for viewers. A green or excellent health indicator is not a substitute for checking the event and its watch page.
2. Confirm the encoder is targeting this event
Check the destination server or stream URL and the stream key in your encoder against the settings for the event selected in Live Control Room. YouTube describes stream keys as the information that directs the encoder feed and allows YouTube to accept it; they function like credentials, so do not share them. See Manage live stream settings.

- If the encoder is pointed at a different event, correct its destination and key, then confirm that the intended event receives the preview.
- If the key is stale, incorrect, or may have been exposed, get or reset the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder to match. Resetting the key without changing the encoder can stop the feed from reaching YouTube.
- Do not paste a stream key into public chats, screenshots, or support posts. Treat it like a password.
3. Check what the encoder is actually sending
Look at the encoder’s own output or status panel rather than inferring its state from YouTube’s health label alone. Check for an active connection, errors, dropped frames, and whether the intended video and audio are being captured.

- Confirm the encoder is running and that its software is up to date.
- Check CPU load and the encoder’s dashboard for warnings or output errors. If the machine is overloaded, the software may not sustain its configured output.
- Listen to and view the local input. If available, inspect a local recording or archive to distinguish a capture problem from a problem in the YouTube event workflow.
- For relevant encoder settings, compare the selected resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance. These settings affect the quality and compatibility of the feed; changing them will not, by itself, start an event that is still waiting for you to click Go live.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder software and the encoder’s own output when diagnosing transmission problems.
4. Test the upload connection if the event and encoder are correct
If the intended event is started, the key matches, and the encoder reports that it is sending, investigate the outbound connection. Test upload capacity—not just download speed—and consider whether other devices or applications are using the same connection.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate in its streaming tips. Treat that as a recommendation, not proof that the network is the cause. Shared networks and interruptions can still affect a stream even when a speed test looks adequate.

5. Test under realistic conditions and monitor messages
Before an important broadcast, run a test using content with movement and audio similar to the real program. In Live Control Room, watch both the health indicator and any status messages while the test runs. A static test image or silent feed may not expose issues that appear with the actual program. YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing and monitoring.
