YouTube’s public view count now measures playback starts—not how many people watched for a meaningful length of time. Since August 24, 2026, a view is counted when playback begins across Shorts, long-form videos, podcasts, and live streams. To understand continued watching, audience size, or revenue, creators need to read that figure alongside engaged views, unique viewers, watch time, and revenue metrics in YouTube Studio.
What does a YouTube view count mean now?
Starting August 24, 2026, YouTube counts a public view when a video begins playing, across Shorts, long-form video, podcasts, and live streams. The public total therefore records playback starts; it does not establish that a viewer kept watching. YouTube says this change did not alter creator earnings or YouTube Partner Program (YPP) eligibility. YouTube’s Help article and a TeamYouTube announcement describe the change.
The previous view measure is retained in Analytics as engaged views, which gives creators a way to distinguish starts from viewers who chose to continue watching. For Shorts, the public count includes starts and replays without a minimum watch-time requirement; that definition took effect March 31, 2025. Since the August 2026 change, the public view count is not a substitute for engaged views, monetized views, or qualified views.

Views, viewers, and audience: what is the difference?
A view is a playback event, not a unique person. YouTube’s monthly audience is an estimate of unique viewers over the previous 28 days, recalculated daily on a rolling basis. It is not the same as subscriber count, nor is it a tally of everyone who has ever watched your channel. YouTube estimates unique viewers using engaged views and corresponding watch time. YouTube’s audience-metrics guidance explains these definitions.
| Metric or category | What it describes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Public views | Playback starts, including Shorts, long-form, podcasts, and live streams as of August 24, 2026 | Exposure measured as starts, not unique people or sustained attention. |
| Engaged views | The earlier Shorts view measure, retained in Analytics; reflects viewers who choose to continue watching | Useful alongside public Shorts views when assessing continued watching. It is not interchangeable with qualified Shorts views. |
| Monthly audience | Estimated unique viewers in the previous 28 days, recalculated daily | A rolling estimate of recent audience, not subscribers or lifetime viewers. |
| New viewers | People watching the channel for the first time during the selected period | Use the selected reporting period when interpreting this category. |
| Casual viewers | Viewers who watched at least once a month for one to five months in the prior year | Indicates some recurring viewing, but not the regular-viewer threshold. |
| Regular viewers | Viewers who watched at least monthly for more than six months in the prior year | Measures a sustained viewing pattern under YouTube’s stated definition. |
| Returning viewers | Viewers who have watched the channel before and came back | Read it with the selected period and other audience measures; the category does not mean the same thing as subscribers. |
These audience categories describe different patterns, so avoid treating them as interchangeable totals. In particular, monthly audience is a rolling 28-day estimate, while new-viewer classification depends on the selected period.
Where to find creator statistics in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Analytics from the left-hand menu.
- Use the Content tab to review reporting across videos, Shorts, live streams, posts, playlists, and podcasts, as well as how audiences find and interact with content.
- Open the Audience tab for monthly audience, viewer categories, format consumption, and—where available—top geographies and subtitle or closed-caption languages.
- For expanded reports, comparisons, and exports, open Advanced Mode from Analytics. The engaged-view metric is available there.
YouTube has been rolling out changes to the Studio experience since July 2026, so labels and layout can vary. Some demographic, geographic, gender, traffic-source, and other data may be limited; a missing or sparse breakdown does not necessarily mean nobody in that group watched. See YouTube’s Analytics overview for its description of the available reports.

RPM vs. CPM: which revenue statistic should you use?
RPM and CPM answer different questions because they use different denominators and describe different sides of monetization. YouTube’s revenue-metrics guidance defines RPM as creator revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s revenue share; CPM is advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions before that share.
Rank #3
| Metric | What it measures | What may be included | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|---|
| RPM | Creator revenue per 1,000 views, after YouTube’s revenue share | Advertising, YouTube Premium, channel memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers may contribute. | A guaranteed payment rate for every view. RPM can include views that did not monetize. |
| CPM | Advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube’s revenue share | Monetized ad impressions and associated ad revenue. | Creator take-home revenue per 1,000 total views. |
For videos, RPM is based on views; for Shorts, YouTube says RPM is based on engaged views. CPM concerns monetized ad impressions. As a result, RPM is typically lower than CPM for structural reasons: the measures use different denominators and account for revenue share differently.
There is no universal creator earnings rate in these definitions. If you quote a channel’s RPM or CPM, identify the format, metric, denominator, and reporting period. An individual channel’s result should not be presented as a platform-wide average.

What Shorts views count toward revenue or YPP?
A public Shorts view does not by itself establish a monetizable or eligibility-qualified view. YouTube says earnings continue to use engaged Shorts views and engaged watch hours, while YPP eligibility uses qualified Shorts views and qualified watch hours; the August 24, 2026 public-counting change did not change those rules.

YouTube’s policy page states that, beginning February 1, 2027, creators will need at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days to share Creator Pool and YouTube Premium Shorts revenue for each month. That is a future effective date as of October 3, 2026, not a description of the current threshold. Check YouTube’s current policy before relying on it, since eligibility terms can change.

- Separate starts from continued watching. Read public views beside engaged views and watch time; a larger start count alone does not show that people stayed.
- Do not equate views with people. Use monthly audience or unique viewers for an estimate of distinct viewers, and remember the 28-day figure changes daily.
- Keep formats separate. Compare Shorts with Shorts, long-form with long-form, and live streams with live streams. Their view and monetization measures can differ.
- Match the question to the metric. Use public views for playback starts, audience reports for viewer patterns, RPM for creator revenue per view, and CPM for advertiser cost per ad impression.
- Include the time window. Analytics results depend on the selected reporting period; monthly audience is specifically a rolling 28-day estimate.
- Do not infer earnings from a public total. Views may not monetize, and RPM can include revenue streams beyond ads. Public view counts are not monetized or eligibility-qualified counts.
Keeping a YouTube live stream running while you track it
Analytics can show live-stream performance, but it does not keep a broadcast online. If your channel uses a prerecorded video for a continuous YouTube stream, the stream itself requires a method that can keep sending it to YouTube.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the video, so no computer, OBS, or home internet connection has to stay on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. A slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and StreamNeo team support. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing period changes. You can pay for a day, a week, a month, six months, or a year and cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
