A steady bitrate in OBS does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream at every moment. First capture the exact warning and time in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room; then compare that moment with OBS’s output status and logs. YouTube’s published guidance does not specify the precise threshold or algorithm behind “at risk,” so the warning alone does not establish a particular cause.
Why OBS and YouTube can show different signals
OBS reports what the encoder is doing at your end. YouTube’s separate stream-health status reports what its Live Control Room detects and can show specific error messages and instructions. A stable bitrate reading is useful evidence, but it is not proof that every part of delivery to YouTube was healthy throughout the stream.
YouTube does not publish the exact trigger or a numeric threshold for the phrase “at risk” in the cited guidance. Treat the warning as a prompt to inspect the message and timeline, not as a diagnosis or a reason to change bitrate blindly.

Check the warning and timestamp first
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Record the exact warning text, its timestamp, and any related stream-status message before changing settings. YouTube says stream status includes specific error messages with instructions: See your live stream’s metrics.
- Compare the same time in OBS. Inspect the output bitrate timeline and OBS logs for reconnects, dropped output, or changes in sending behavior. A bitrate number that looks stable now may not show what happened at the warning’s timestamp.
- Classify the message. If it mentions “No data,” “No video,” or a disconnection, start by checking the encoder and connection timeline. If YouTube Studio instead identifies a copyright, account, or other restriction, follow the notice’s instructions; bitrate changes are not a substitute for resolving a policy or account issue.
This timestamp comparison is a practical way to narrow the issue using two monitoring views; it is not an official explanation of YouTube’s warning trigger or a claim that YouTube exposes OBS-level packet data.

Verify OBS output against YouTube’s settings
Check the settings for the output you actually send—not just the intended scene or canvas. Match the codec, resolution, and frame rate to the corresponding row in YouTube’s current encoder guidance. For H.264, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. These are encoder recommendations, not a threshold for “at risk” or a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain the stream.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Protocol and codecs: YouTube’s referenced settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Follow the guidance for your selected protocol and codec.
Use YouTube’s published table rather than applying an H.264 bitrate value to a different codec or resolution: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Test upload capacity under realistic conditions
A speed test can help assess upload capacity, but a single result does not prove that capacity will remain stable throughout a live event. YouTube recommends testing before going live, with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health and messages during the test. It also recommends checking upload speed.
- Run a test stream using the resolution, frame rate, audio, and typical movement you expect to use.
- Watch Live Control Room’s stream-health status and note any messages and their times.
- Compare those times with OBS’s output status and logs, then investigate the part of the timeline where the signals diverge.
YouTube’s guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Use a private or otherwise appropriate test for your channel and audience.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “No data,” “No video,” or a disconnection message | Compare the warning time with OBS logs and output status for reconnects, interruptions, or changes in sending behavior. | Investigate the encoder and connection timeline first; test again under realistic stream conditions. |
| OBS bitrate appears stable, but YouTube still warns | Confirm you are comparing the same time, and read the full Live Control Room message rather than relying on the current OBS number. | Check the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s matching guidance. |
| YouTube Studio shows a copyright, account, or other restriction notice | Read the restriction notice and its instructions. | Follow YouTube’s stated route to address the restriction instead of treating it as an upload-bitrate problem. |
| The warning appears during a test or under a busy workload | Check whether the test reflects the planned audio and video movement; compare stream-health messages with OBS and network records. | Repeat a realistic test and monitor Live Control Room. Do not treat one speed-test result as proof of sustained capacity. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the separate issue is keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option, not a diagnosis or fix for an “at risk” warning. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
