A wired Ethernet connection rules out Wi-Fi as one possible source of trouble, but it does not guarantee that your encoder, PC, router, ISP, and the full outbound path can sustain the stream settings you chose. Start with the exact timestamped warning in YouTube Live Control Room, check what your encoder is producing locally, then compare your configured bitrate with a tested upload connection.

1. Read the exact stream-health warning

Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and note the full health message and its timestamp. YouTube’s Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check the stream being sent and show messages beside the Health Indicator. Red errors are critical and may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors are moderate and may reduce quality. The wording matters: a bitrate, codec, audio/video format, frame-rate, or keyframe warning calls for a different correction than a general connection warning. YouTube’s stream-health guidance and error-message guidance explain these indicators.

Do not assume that “poor connection” proves the Ethernet cable is bad. The warning alone does not identify the failing component. Record it before changing settings so you can tell whether a later test or adjustment helped.

2. Check the encoder’s local output and PC load

Before blaming the network, inspect the encoder’s own preview or output. Confirm that the picture looks right and the audio is present and clean. Check its error messages and CPU-load indicator while the stream is running or during a representative test.

  • If the local picture or audio is already wrong, investigate the source, encoder configuration, and computer load first. YouTube recommends considering another encoder if the local stream is bad.
  • If the encoder reports errors or the PC is heavily loaded, reduce the workload or correct the encoder issue, then test again.
  • If local output looks and sounds healthy, focus next on the bitrate and outbound connection.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder output, errors, and CPU load before investigating the internet connection.

3. Check the stream settings against YouTube’s recommendations

Use the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually selected in your encoder when checking YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate table. For the listed RTMP/RTMPS configuration, YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); specifies a 2-second keyframe frequency (not over 4 seconds); and lists AAC or MP3 audio.

H.264 bitrate examples

Video format YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not guaranteed minimum upload speeds or a universal pass/fail threshold. Its table varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so check the current page for your exact format rather than extrapolating from these examples.

Run an upload speed test and choose a quality your connection can sustain reliably. As practical troubleshooting—not a quoted YouTube threshold—leave headroom for other devices and network traffic rather than setting the stream bitrate right at the measured upload result. If Live Control Room names a specific format or bitrate error, correct that requested setting instead of changing unrelated options.

4. Test the outbound connection and isolate the wired path

When the encoder output is healthy, test outbound internet strength. A cable connects your PC to the local router or switch; it does not establish that the router, ISP connection, or rest of the route to YouTube is trouble-free. If the outbound connection test identifies a problem, YouTube advises contacting your ISP. See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.

You can also isolate the local wired link with simple checks. These are practical troubleshooting steps, not a YouTube-prescribed diagnosis:

  • Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
  • 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
  1. Reseat the Ethernet cable at both the PC and router or switch.
  2. If another port is available, connect to a different router or switch port and retest.
  3. Temporarily substitute a known-good cable. Consider replacing the cable only if inspection or this substitution points to it.

A different result after one of these changes helps narrow the cause; it does not by itself prove the ISP or YouTube was responsible. YouTube mentions unplugging Ethernet in a specific test of failover between primary and backup encoders. That is a failover test, not general advice to unplug a wired connection to fix poor health.

5. Run a representative retest and keep monitoring

Before the next live event, test using the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and representative audio and motion. Check the Live Control Room preview, then monitor stream health and audio/video during the event. If a warning returns, note its new timestamp and wording before adjusting settings; that makes it easier to distinguish a persistent connection issue from a configuration or encoder problem. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring during transmission. Its encoder-settings guidance and live-streaming tips cover testing and monitoring.

6. Narrow down the likely source

What you observe Where to investigate next
The warning names bitrate, codec, format, frame rate, or keyframe cadence Correct the specific encoder setting named in the Live Control Room message.
The encoder’s local picture or sound is poor, or it reports errors or high CPU load Check the source, encoder configuration, and PC capacity; consider another encoder if appropriate.
Local output is healthy, but an upload test finds an outbound connection problem Check the wired link and contact your ISP about the connection test result.
Different viewers on separate connections report trouble YouTube says the encoder may be involved; review its output and logs. This pattern alone does not establish a particular network-side cause.

Without the actual warning, encoder logs, PC details, and network measurements, the cause cannot be determined from “wired Ethernet” alone.

Or let it run in the cloud
