A wired Ethernet connection can still show an unstable-connection warning: it does not guarantee enough steady upload bandwidth for your stream. Start with the exact message in YouTube Live Control Room, check what your encoder is actually sending, then test outbound upload against the stream’s total bitrate. Don’t replace equipment until those checks point to it.
First, confirm what the warning refers to
This guidance is for a creator sending a live encoder feed and seeing a stream-health warning in YouTube Live Control Room. It is not the same as a viewer’s playback buffering. Note the exact health message and the time it appears. Live Control Room checks the incoming stream and continues to show an error while the underlying issue remains; critical errors appear in red and moderate errors in yellow. YouTube’s stream status guidance describes the health indicator and its messages.
Use the displayed message as the starting point rather than assuming Ethernet, the router, or the ISP is at fault. A wired connection is recommended for computer live streaming, but other users and uploads sharing the network can limit the stable capacity available to your stream. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streaming; it does not say that Ethernet guarantees sufficient upload bandwidth.
Check the encoder before changing the network
Inspect the outgoing preview and error indicators
Look at the encoder’s preview or output while the warning is present. If the picture or sound is already poor there, troubleshoot the encoder and source before blaming the connection. Check encoder error indicators, CPU load, and the quality of the video and audio sources. If you record a local archive, review it too: defects in the archive can help distinguish a source or encoding problem from a problem with YouTube’s incoming feed.

Update or compare encoders if the local output is unclear
Update the encoder if it is out of date. If the output looks healthy locally but Live Control Room continues to report instability, try another encoder as a diagnostic. A different result can help narrow down whether the original encoder is contributing; it does not by itself prove a network fault.
YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and local recording, and updating or trying another encoder when problems persist.

Measure outbound upload and compare it with the stream
Test upload speed, preferably under conditions representative of the live stream. A download-speed result does not tell you whether the outbound connection can sustain your broadcast. YouTube recommends enough upload bandwidth for the total bitrate and advises leaving 20% room. As YouTube puts it, “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Find the configured video bitrate and audio bitrate in your encoder, and add them to estimate the stream’s total bitrate.
- If you are sending a backup stream too, include its bitrate when assessing the connection’s total demand.
- Compare that total with measured outbound upload, leaving at least the recommended 20% headroom. For example, a stream configured for a total of 10 Mbps calls for about 12 Mbps of available upload under this rule; that margin is a recommendation, not a guarantee of stability.
- Repeat the test when other people or devices are using the network if that reflects your normal streaming conditions. Shared use can reduce the capacity available to your encoder.
YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Use the upload result rather than a plan’s advertised download speed. YouTube’s encoder and streaming guidance provides its testing advice.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Match bitrate recommendations to your codec and video settings
Compare the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations for that combination. The following figures are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations; they are not measurements of your internet connection and do not guarantee that a particular line can sustain the stream. The official page does not state a publication year for these figures, so check its current table before changing settings.
| H.264 video setting | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are video bitrate recommendations; your total stream demand also includes audio and any backup feed. Recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings table for the combination you use.

Adjust the stream only after the checks
If upload is inadequate or fluctuates, reduce the encoder bitrate or lower resolution or frame rate to a supported recommendation for your codec. Change one setting at a time, then check the encoder output and Live Control Room again. If the encoder output is bad even locally, focus on the encoder, CPU load, and sources instead of lowering network settings blindly.

If testing indicates a connection problem, contact your ISP with the upload results and the times you observed instability. The official guidance supports testing and contacting the ISP when connection problems appear, but it does not establish that a particular DNS change, firewall toggle, router purchase, or cable category will fix this warning.

When should you replace the Ethernet cable?
Inspect the existing cable and its connections. Replacing it is reasonable if it is visibly damaged, loose, or fails to stay connected. Otherwise, first check the Live Control Room message, encoder output, and measured upload. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer streaming, but does not claim that buying a new cable fixes inadequate or unstable upload capacity.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube channel stream that keeps looping 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a fix for an unstable connection on a live encoder feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer or home connection staying on.
