Use a different phone number whose owner agrees to receive the verification code. Google recommends that remedy for the message “This phone number has been used too many times for verification,” and says a family member’s or friend’s number may be used. Google’s help guidance does not publish the usage threshold or say when it resets.
Why does YouTube say your phone number has been used too many times?
The message means Google has reached a limit on how many times that phone number can be used for verification. Google Account Help explains that it limits phone-number use “to protect you from abuse.” The message is about the number’s verification usage, not necessarily something wrong with your phone or YouTube app.
Google does not state in its help guidance how many uses trigger the limit, whether the limit applies over a particular time period, or when it resets. Claims such as a fixed number of accounts per year are not established by that official guidance.

What to do when your number is rejected
- Try another number. This is Google’s documented response to this exact error. Use a number its owner has agreed you may use and can access to receive the code.
- Consider a family member’s or friend’s number. Google specifically identifies this as an option. Ask first, and make sure the person can receive the verification message or call.
- Enter the code received on that number. Follow the verification prompts on your Google or YouTube screen. Do not share the code beyond the verification flow.
- If the alternate number is also rejected, try a different eligible number. The help page does not provide a case-specific appeal route for this error.
Will waiting clear the limit?
Google’s help article does not give a reset timetable for this error. Waiting a set number of hours or days might be suggested in community discussions, but it is not a remedy Google promises in the official guidance. If you need to verify now, follow Google’s stated advice and use another number rather than relying on an assumed reset.

Could the number have been used by someone else?
Possibly. Phone numbers can be reassigned, and a Google Account Community Product Expert has mentioned number recycling as a possible explanation for a rejection. That is community context, not an official diagnosis; it cannot establish why Google rejected a particular number. The documented remedy remains using a different number.
How this differs from “This phone number cannot be used for verification”
Google’s verification help also describes the separate message “This phone number cannot be used for verification.” Do not treat the two messages as identical: the wording on your screen matters. Google likewise recommends trying a different number for that separate error, but neither message’s help guidance supplies a numeric allowance or reset schedule.

- The block will clear after a specific wait: no reset period is published for this exact message.
- A device change or repeated attempts will fix it: the official guidance reviewed does not establish either as a solution.
- You need to buy a SIM or use a virtual-number service: Google’s stated remedy is another number; the guidance does not identify a product purchase as necessary.
