Start by checking the exact RTMPS URL from YouTube Live Control Room, then verify that your encoder connects to its hostname on TCP port 443 using TLS and sends that hostname as SNI. Next, check DNS, outbound rules in the VPS operating system, and the route. Contabo describes its network firewall as filtering inbound traffic while leaving outbound traffic unrestricted, so an enabled Contabo network firewall alone does not explain blocked outbound RTMPS. The available documentation does not establish an India-specific block or identify the cause on any particular VPS.
What an RTMPS handshake failure means
YouTube RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS. Before YouTube can receive the stream, the client must reach the right server, establish TLS, and authenticate the server hostname. For YouTube RTMPS, the connection must use the URL and hostname supplied by YouTube, TCP port 443, and SNI containing that hostname. A TCP connection by itself does not prove TLS succeeded, and a successful TLS check does not prove YouTube accepted the stream key or RTMP session. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide documents the port and SNI requirements.
That sequence matters when diagnosing errors: a certificate or SSL error points first to URL, TLS, or hostname handling; a timeout points first to reachability; and a stream that appears in Live Control Room but has poor health has progressed beyond the handshake stage.

Check the failure in this order
1. Copy YouTube’s RTMPS URL and current stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to the stream’s settings.
- Reveal or copy the RTMPS URL—not the ordinary RTMP URL—and copy the current stream key from the same control room.
- Paste the URL exactly into the encoder, preserving its hostname and path. Do not substitute an IP address or manually change the endpoint.
- Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube notes that its default displayed URL may be ordinary RTMP, so select RTMPS explicitly where available. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance.
Keep the stream key private. Remove it from screenshots, command output, logs, and support messages before sharing diagnostics.

2. Confirm the TLS connection uses the correct hostname
Check the encoder’s connection details or logs for the destination hostname and port. It should connect to the RTMPS hostname YouTube supplied on TCP 443, start TLS, and send that same hostname through SNI. Connecting to an IP address, using the wrong hostname, or omitting SNI can cause certificate authentication to fail even when the VPS can open a TCP connection. YouTube’s guidance calls out URL/server selection, port 443, SSL handling, and SNI.
If the error mentions an invalid SSL certificate, check the hostname, port, certificate validation, certificate chain, system clock, and TLS diagnostic before changing firewall rules. Do not disable certificate validation as a workaround; that hides an authentication failure rather than fixing the endpoint configuration.
3. Test DNS, TCP 443, and TLS from the VPS
Run tests from the affected VPS, using the exact hostname from YouTube’s URL. These Linux examples test separate layers; replace HOSTNAME with that hostname, without adding the RTMP path or stream key:

getent hosts HOSTNAME
nc -vz -w 5 HOSTNAME 443
openssl s_client -connect HOSTNAME:443 -servername HOSTNAME
getent hostschecks whether the VPS can resolve the name. If it returns no address, inspect DNS configuration and resolver reachability first.ncchecks whether a TCP connection to port 443 can be established. A timeout or refusal is a reachability result, not a TLS result.openssl s_clientattempts TLS and explicitly supplies SNI with-servername. Review whether the handshake completes and whether certificate validation reports a problem. A TLS success still does not test the RTMP path, stream key, or ingest session.
These are diagnostic suggestions based on YouTube’s documented connection requirements, not tests performed on your instance. Record the timestamp, resolved addresses, command output, and exact encoder error so results can be compared. Never include the stream key in the record.
4. Inspect the VPS guest firewall and route
Check the operating system’s outbound policy and routing table. Depending on the VPS operating system, inspect UFW or nftables/iptables on Linux, or Windows Defender Firewall and local security policy on Windows. Confirm outbound DNS and TCP 443 are permitted and that the route toward the resolved destination is present. Do not open inbound ports to fix a connection initiated by the VPS.
Contabo’s documentation distinguishes its provider-side network firewall from the firewall inside the server: its network firewall controls incoming traffic and leaves outgoing traffic unrestricted, while operating-system firewall rules can still control both directions. Therefore, a guest-level outbound rule or a routing issue remains possible even when the Contabo firewall is enabled. See Contabo’s firewall explanation and OS-level firewall guidance.

5. Compare the test result with the encoder error
| Observation | Check next | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate SSL or certificate error | RTMPS hostname and path, port 443, certificate validation, and SNI. | It does not by itself show that Contabo blocked the connection. |
| TCP connection times out or is refused | DNS resolution, guest outbound rules, the VPS route, and endpoint reachability. | Without further tests, it does not distinguish a local guest policy from a route or endpoint problem. |
| The TLS test succeeds but the encoder fails | Encoder RTMPS preset, URL parsing, SNI behavior, TLS library, and encoder version. | It does not prove YouTube accepted the stream key or RTMP session. |
| The stream appears in Live Control Room but health or quality is poor | Bitrate headroom, encoder load, codecs, and stream settings. | This is a later-stage stream-health problem, not necessarily a handshake failure. |
If both the TLS test and encoder time out, focus on DNS, guest egress policy, local routing, and possible provider routing. If TLS works but only the encoder fails, investigate its protocol implementation and configuration rather than changing provider firewall rules without evidence.
Once the handshake succeeds, troubleshoot stream health separately
Encoding settings do not explain a TLS handshake that never completes. After the stream reaches YouTube, check the encoder’s CPU load, configured video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance. Then monitor the stream health indicators in Live Control Room and use YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
For network capacity, YouTube recommends keeping 20% spare upload capacity above the stream bitrate, counting primary and backup streams. That is headroom guidance for a stream that is being sent; it is not a fix for an RTMPS TLS negotiation failure. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

When to contact Contabo or the encoder vendor
Escalate a suspected route problem to Contabo
Provide the VPS location, test timestamps, destination hostname and resolved IP address, sanitized TCP 443 and TLS test output, and traceroute or MTR results. Ask them to investigate the route if the results point beyond the guest firewall. Contabo’s connectivity guidance recommends supplying traceroute/MTR information when investigating unstable connectivity: Contabo connection troubleshooting.
Escalate an encoder-specific failure to its vendor
Include the encoder name and version, its RTMPS configuration with the stream key removed, the exact sanitized error, and whether the hostname-based TLS test succeeds from the same VPS. Do not send the stream key to either support team.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Contabo India location prove that YouTube is blocking RTMPS?
No. The available documentation does not establish an India-specific block, and the cause has to be diagnosed from the VPS’s actual DNS, TLS, firewall, and route results.
