When a YouTube RTMPS connection from a DigitalOcean droplet in Bangalore fails, check the RTMPS URL and stream key first, then verify TLS, port 443 and SNI, outbound rules in both DigitalOcean Cloud Firewalls and the droplet’s host firewall, and finally YouTube’s stream status and health diagnostics. The available official documentation does not establish Bangalore as the cause; identify the failure stage from your droplet’s test output and YouTube’s status.
1. Verify YouTube’s RTMPS URL and stream key

In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s Stream tab, or open the scheduled stream. Reveal the RTMPS URL in the Stream URL field. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default, so explicitly select the RTMPS URL.

Copy the matching stream key into the encoder. Use the current URL and key for that stream; do not reuse a value from a different stream unless that is intentional.

If the encoder uses YouTube’s API, the primary ingestion address is
cdn.ingestionInfo.rtmpsIngestionAddress; the documented backup address iscdn.ingestionInfo.rtmpsBackupIngestionAddress. A wrong endpoint, mismatched key, or RTMP URL entered where RTMPS is required can prevent the session from connecting. YouTube also notes that an encoder may not support RTMPS.
2. Check RTMPS, TLS, port 443 and SNI
YouTube RTMPS requires the rtmps URL scheme, a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and RTMP over SSL/TLS. The connection must reach the ingestion server on TCP port 443. The TLS handshake must include SNI set to the hostname in the ingestion URL.
Test TCP reachability
From the droplet, substitute the hostname from the RTMPS URL and test port 443:

nc -vz <ingestion-host> 443If this cannot connect, investigate outbound firewall rules and network reachability before changing encoder media settings.

Test the TLS handshake and SNI
openssl s_client -connect <ingestion-host>:443 -servername <ingestion-host>Check whether the client completes TLS and validates the certificate. An SSL error can point to a wrong hostname, wrong port, certificate-validation problem or missing SNI support. If TCP opens but the RTMP client times out, confirm the client is wrapping RTMP in TLS rather than sending cleartext RTMP.
These commands test basic TCP/TLS reachability, not the encoder’s full RTMPS session or the health of the audio and video being sent.
3. Check both DigitalOcean and droplet firewalls
DigitalOcean Cloud Firewalls and firewall software inside the droplet are separate layers. Inspect every Cloud Firewall attached to the droplet and the host firewall, such as UFW or iptables if used. The relevant direction for this connection is outbound TCP to port 443 toward YouTube’s ingestion endpoint—not inbound TCP 443 to the droplet.

Review outbound rules on every attached firewall. DigitalOcean documents that configured outbound rules deny traffic that matches no rule; its firewall quickstart also states that a firewall with no configured outbound rules permits no outbound traffic.

Allow outbound TCP on port 443 to the required destination. Check destination restrictions as well as the port. Do not assume a permissive rule on one firewall overrides a restrictive rule on another attached firewall.
Host firewall

Inspect the active host firewall rules and confirm that they do not block outbound TCP 443. A cloud firewall rule does not alter UFW or iptables rules inside the operating system.

After changing a rule, repeat the TCP test and then retry the encoder connection. This helps distinguish a remaining network block from a TLS or encoder issue.

4. Use YouTube status to distinguish connection failure from media health
A successful TCP or TLS test does not prove that YouTube accepted the encoder session. Likewise, a connected session can still send media that YouTube considers unhealthy. Check the stream’s status and its health diagnostics in Live Control Room or, for API-based workflows, status.healthStatus.configurationIssues[].
YouTube’s stream API documents statuses including active, created, error, inactive and ready. Use the reported status alongside the exact encoder error to locate the failure stage.
If YouTube reports a stream-health issue

No audio or video, or too little video data: Check that the encoder is sending the expected tracks and that YouTube is receiving enough video data.

Bitrate or frame-rate warning: Compare the encoder’s actual output with the stream configuration and the specific health diagnostic. The reviewed guidance does not establish a single bitrate or frame-rate value for every stream, so do not apply a guessed universal target.

Keyframe or GOP warning: For the listed long or overlong GOP issues, YouTube’s guidance says keyframe frequency should be four seconds or less.
These diagnostics concern the media configuration received by YouTube; they do not, by themselves, show that the droplet cannot reach the ingestion server.
5. Diagnose by the stage and exact error

Record the exact encoder error, command output, attached firewall rules and YouTube status/health details. Together, these are needed to diagnose an individual droplet; the region name alone is not.
Does Bangalore itself explain the failure?
No regional cause is established by the official YouTube and DigitalOcean documentation covered here. It describes general RTMPS requirements and firewall behavior, but does not show that DigitalOcean’s Bangalore region blocks YouTube RTMPS or that a regional incident is active. Treat Bangalore as context, not a diagnosis; instance-specific tests and the current YouTube status are needed to identify the cause.
