A YouTube stream-health warning can point to a network that cannot sustain your bitrate, or to a mini PC that cannot render and encode the workload smoothly. Check OBS’s dropped-frame and encoding-lag indicators before changing settings: lower bitrate addresses network capacity, while lower resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity can ease local processing. YouTube’s ingest recommendations do not guarantee that a particular mini PC can encode a given stream.
Diagnose the symptom before changing settings
Write down the exact warning text shown in YouTube Studio, then check the OBS statistics for dropped frames and encoding-lag or skipped-frame indicators. Also note whether viewers report buffering. These clues are related but not interchangeable: OBS notes that viewers can buffer because of their own connection or playback device even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames. The reviewed official guidance does not map every possible YouTube warning label to one cause, so use the literal message alongside OBS’s counters rather than assuming one warning always means one specific fault.
- OBS dropped frames: investigate the connection to YouTube and whether it can sustain the configured bitrate.
- Encoding overload or choppy output: investigate local encoding and rendering load on the mini PC.
- Viewer buffering without broadcaster drops: check the viewer’s connection and playback conditions as well as your stream.
Change one relevant setting at a time, run a short test, and compare the same indicators. A network adjustment will not resolve a local encoding bottleneck, and reducing resolution will not fix an upload connection that cannot sustain the chosen bitrate.

OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the set bitrate. Start with sustained upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused; shared network use can reduce the capacity available to your stream. OBS separately suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point. Treat both as vendor heuristics, not guarantees or a universal formula.

- Measure the connection while it is in normal use. Compare the stream bitrate with stable outbound capacity at the time you plan to broadcast. Account for other people and devices using the network.
- Reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Keep the resolution and frame rate in mind; lowering bitrate may reduce image quality, but it can ease network demand.
- Check the connection path. If Wi-Fi is unstable, try wired Ethernet. Check a suspect cable, router or modem, and network drivers. A cable helps only if wireless instability or a cable fault is relevant; it cannot increase your ISP’s upload capacity.
- Look for competing or interfering software. Check VPNs, security software, network-prioritization tools, and other devices or programs consuming bandwidth.

If OBS reports encoding overload, reduce local workload
Encoding overload or choppy output calls for reducing the work performed by the mini PC, not automatically changing the network. OBS rendering uses GPU resources too, so complex scenes can contribute even when the encoder setting itself appears reasonable.

- Free resources. Close GPU-heavy programs that are not needed for the broadcast.
- Try a lower output resolution. This reduces the amount of video work the system must process.
- Reduce frame rate. If 60 fps is struggling, test 30 fps.
- Simplify scenes. Remove unnecessary sources, expensive filters, or browser sources and retest.
- Compare counters after each change. Use a short, representative test rather than changing several settings at once.
There is no universal encoder preset for an unspecified mini PC. Available hardware encoders and performance depend on its CPU, GPU, operating system, encoder, OBS configuration, and scene. Check YouTube’s RTMP ingest settings
For YouTube RTMP or RTMPS streaming, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds (not exceeding 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Supported video codecs listed by YouTube are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps are supported. Confirm that OBS’s output settings match the stream key and configuration you intend to use.

H.264 SDR bitrate recommendations
The following are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not OBS presets or mini-PC performance benchmarks. “Minimum” and “recommended” refer to YouTube’s bitrate guidance for these H.264 resolution and frame-rate combinations.

For a low-power mini PC under load, testing 720p30 or 1080p30 before trying 60 fps is a reasonable troubleshooting sequence, not a hardware guarantee. A lower resolution means fewer pixels to process, but results still depend on scene complexity and the encoder available. Choose a bitrate that fits both the applicable YouTube ingest guidance and the connection’s stable upload capacity with headroom. YouTube says it detects encoder settings and transcodes live streams into multiple output formats; by default it detects resolution and frame rate, while a custom stream key allows manual stream-resolution settings. Run a representative test before going live
- Prepare a short test using movement and audio similar to the actual stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the event; confirm that picture and audio are present and look and sound as intended.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame and encoding indicators alongside YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- If a problem appears, adjust the setting that addresses that symptom, then repeat the test and compare.
- During the event, continue monitoring audio and video quality.
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, reviewing health messages, and checking the preview before streaming. Its guidance is available in YouTube Help’s encoder settings and live-streaming tips.

Copyright and live content checks
Technical health is separate from whether you have the right to stream the content. Before an event, confirm that you have permission to use music, video, and other third-party material in a live broadcast. A technically stable stream does not establish that its content complies with YouTube’s rules.
