If YouTube RTMP ingest stopped working from an Indian cloud server immediately after a firewall change, check the new outbound network policy first—but treat it as the leading clue, not proof. Verify the ingest URL and protocol in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS, then test outbound connectivity and compare the firewall rule before and after the change. The exact rule depends on your cloud provider and deployment.

Start by identifying the failure

The symptom helps separate a connection problem from an unstable stream. A timeout means the encoder may not be reaching YouTube; an SSL error points toward the secure connection setup; a stream that connects but drops or buffers may instead be running into bandwidth or connection-stability limits.

  • Connection timeout: Check the server URL, RTMPS support, and outbound connectivity from the cloud host.
  • SSL error: Recheck the RTMPS URL and encoder configuration. YouTube suggests trying port 443 for this error.
  • Connects, then becomes unstable: Check total outgoing bitrate against available upload bandwidth and assess connection reliability.

These symptoms are clues, not definitive diagnoses. A firewall change can affect egress access or routing, but the cloud provider and the changed rule are not specified here, so there is no universal provider-console fix or single rule to prescribe.

Verify the YouTube ingest URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the ingest URL for the stream you intend to run.
  2. Confirm you are using the RTMPS URL, not an ordinary RTMP URL copied from another setup or configuration.
  3. Check that the encoder is using the stream key associated with that stream.
  4. Compare the URL and key in the encoder with the current values in Live Control Room; correct any stale or mismatched values before changing network rules.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which it describes as RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection that provides encryption. See YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS

Check the encoder’s current version and its documentation or protocol options for explicit RTMPS support. Selecting a secure URL will not help if the encoder cannot establish RTMPS connections.

If the URL is correct and the encoder reports an SSL error, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance suggests specifying port 443 in the URL or encoder configuration. Treat that as a troubleshooting step for the documented SSL-error case—not as proof that every YouTube endpoint or cloud firewall must use only port 443. Follow the endpoint and protocol requirements shown for your stream, then confirm that the actual egress policy permits the required traffic.

Test outbound connectivity and inspect the firewall change

  1. Run a reachability test from the cloud host toward the configured YouTube ingest endpoint, using a method appropriate to your operating system and encoder. A successful DNS lookup alone does not establish that the server can make the required outbound connection.
  2. Check whether the encoder’s connection attempt is blocked, rejected, or timing out, using the host’s available network or application logs.
  3. Review the egress policy, routing, and other network controls changed immediately before the failure. Compare the effective configuration before and after the change, if you have a record of it.
  4. Confirm that the policy permits the traffic required by the configured ingest endpoint and protocol. Do not assume an inbound firewall rule is the relevant control: this is a connection initiated from your server to YouTube.
  5. If the rule’s effect is unclear, consult the cloud provider’s documentation or support with the provider, region, destination, protocol, and change details. Without those details, a provider-specific rule or console path cannot be identified reliably.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for a connection timeout advises checking the server URL and RTMPS support; if the encoder output appears healthy, the outbound internet connection may be at fault. See YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.

Check bandwidth if the connection succeeds but the stream is unstable

A firewall fix does not guarantee a stable stream. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That is bandwidth guidance, not a firewall-port requirement. See YouTube Help’s streaming tips.

  • Add up the encoder’s outgoing video and audio bitrate to estimate the total stream bitrate.
  • Compare it with upload capacity available to the server while it is streaming, rather than relying only on a nominal plan speed.
  • Allow the recommended headroom and check for competing transfers or an unreliable connection.

Consider HLS only when both ends are configured for it

YouTube documents HLS as another ingest protocol, but it is not a generic way around an egress firewall. Use it only if your encoder supports HLS and the YouTube stream configuration or key is set up for HLS. Then confirm that the firewall policy permits the traffic required by that configuration. YouTube’s protocol guidance is at Set up live streaming with an encoder.

Ingest option What to verify What it does not establish
RTMPS RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, associated stream key, encoder support, and permitted outbound traffic. That port 443 is the only port every endpoint or firewall must use.
HLS Encoder support, YouTube stream configuration or key for HLS, and permitted outbound traffic. That switching protocols bypasses a firewall restriction.

Common causes and practical fixes

  • Wrong or outdated ingest URL: Copy the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and update the encoder.
  • Wrong stream key: Use the key associated with the stream whose ingest URL you copied.
  • Encoder lacks RTMPS support: Check its current version and protocol documentation; use an encoder and configuration that explicitly support RTMPS.
  • SSL error with the right URL: Try YouTube’s suggested port 443 configuration for this error, then verify the applicable endpoint and egress policy.
  • Timeout after a firewall change: Test outbound connectivity from the server and compare the effective egress and routing policy before and after the change.
  • Unstable stream despite connecting: Check total bitrate, available upload bandwidth, the recommended headroom, and connection reliability.
  • HLS also fails: Confirm that both the encoder and YouTube stream configuration support HLS and that the firewall allows its required traffic; do not treat it as an automatic bypass.
