A YouTube RTMP connection error from an Ubuntu VPS in India does not, by itself, prove that DNS or a firewall is at fault. Start by copying the exact RTMPS server URL from YouTube Live Control Room, checking the stream key and confirming that your encoder supports RTMPS. Then investigate outbound network access and DNS against the specific hostname YouTube gave you, with your VPS provider if needed. YouTube recommends trying port 443 for a persistent SSL error; that is a targeted check, not proof that every failed connection is a firewall problem.
Identify the error before changing the VPS
Use the error reported by your encoder to choose the first check. A timeout, an SSL error and a startup error point to different parts of the connection. None alone confirms that an India-specific network rule is responsible.

Open the stream settings and inspect the server URL. YouTube says the RTMPS URL is revealed using the lock icon; the default displayed URL may use ordinary RTMP. Copy the RTMPS server and scheme shown for your stream rather than guessing a hostname or path. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

Copy the current stream key into your encoder. A stream key functions like a password for the stream, so do not publish it, paste it into a public forum or include it in screenshots. You can review the key in YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Save the settings, restart the connection attempt and note whether the error changes. A changed error can narrow the fault; a successful connection should appear in Live Control Room.

For an SSL error, try YouTube’s port 443 check
If the RTMPS URL looks correct but the encoder still reports an SSL error, YouTube recommends specifying port 443 in the RTMPS URL or in the encoder’s port configuration. Use the actual server details displayed in Live Control Room; any hostname or path shown in a help-page example is illustrative, not a substitute for your stream’s URL. Check encoder support and outbound connectivity
Confirm the encoder can use RTMPS
For a timeout, YouTube advises verifying the server URL and whether the encoder supports RTMPS. Check the encoder’s documentation and install an available update before treating the VPS as the cause. If the encoder only supports ordinary RTMP, it cannot use an RTMPS endpoint as configured.
Test the VPS network path
If the URL, key and encoder configuration are correct, test outbound connectivity from the VPS and check whether the connection to the exact YouTube endpoint can be established. YouTube recommends testing the outbound internet connection when troubleshooting a healthy-looking encoder that cannot reach the service. The retrieved guidance does not specify a universal Ubuntu command, a complete provider-independent egress allowlist or a special India rule. Ask your VPS provider whether outbound connections to the exact endpoint are filtered, and check any security group or provider firewall attached to your instance.
Do not infer a port block from a failed connection without checking the endpoint and encoder first. Likewise, do not assume that opening an inbound firewall port will fix a streaming connection initiated outbound from your VPS. Confirm the direction and policy with your host’s actual network controls.

DNS is worth checking as a general network diagnostic, but the YouTube guidance cited here does not prescribe a DNS server change or a YouTube-specific DNS repair. Resolve only the hostname copied from Live Control Room and compare the result with what the VPS provider expects for its network. If it does not resolve, or resolves inconsistently, investigate the resolver configuration with the host. Do not substitute a guessed YouTube hostname or claim that changing to a public DNS service is the official fix.

A timeout by itself is not evidence of DNS failure. First confirm the RTMPS server, encoder support and whether outbound connectivity is restricted; escalate with the exact hostname and error text if those checks do not explain the failure.
Check upload capacity and stream settings
YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth headroom of 20%, including the primary and backup stream bitrate where applicable. Test the VPS’s available upload capacity under realistic conditions rather than relying only on a provider’s advertised maximum. If capacity is too low or unstable, reduce the encoder bitrate or resolve the VPS network limitation before going live. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Once the connection works, verify that the media and encoder settings are compatible. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as streaming protocols, H.264, H.265 and AV1 as common video codecs, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR encoding. Use the encoder settings appropriate to your resolution and frame rate; YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations provide the relevant values. Test before an event and monitor stream health in Live Control Room.
When to involve your VPS provider
Contact the host after you have the exact RTMPS hostname, the error text and the approximate time of a failed attempt. Ask whether the instance’s outbound policy permits a connection to that endpoint and whether they can see a blocked or failed egress connection. Include the Ubuntu release, encoder name and version, and whether the failure is an SSL error, timeout or startup error. This gives support actionable details without assuming the provider is at fault.

Does a YouTube RTMP timeout mean the VPS firewall is blocking the stream?
No. A timeout can also result from an incorrect server URL or an encoder that does not support RTMPS. Check those first, then investigate outbound network policy.
Should I change DNS servers on my Ubuntu VPS?
Not as a first step. Check whether the exact hostname shown in Live Control Room resolves, then discuss resolver behavior with your VPS provider if it does not. The cited YouTube guidance does not prescribe a DNS-server change.
Is port 443 required for every YouTube RTMPS connection?
